The high school student of today will always be remembered as the youth of the seventies 1970 was a year of war and violence. The war in Indochina began. Violence erupted on America' campuses from a shutdown of nows from Cambodia. Women’ Liberation also erupted as women marched demanding equal rights. This was also the year when M A S H. Pope John II made a memorable trip to the U S. and millions came out to see him. The worst commercial nuclear accident occurred at Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island power plant. EAS1 1980 PASSENGER Vy CAR, ’79-’80: ENDING OF AN ERA That oxciting moment — you're sixteen and your blue slip arrives in the mail. You pester your parents until they take you to the drivers' license station. Finally! Independence and adulthood — at least that's what you thought! With depleting energy sources and increasing gasoline and oil prices, the symbolic image of the car may soon be shattered. Needless driving and gas cars are on the way out. There are many different customs and rituals that are followed. In the U.S., Valentines are given to those special friends and loved ones on that magic date. February 14. Even though schools, banks, and businesses do not close for Valentino's Day. it is one of the most popular holidays. The contest was sponsored by J.E.T.S., Junior Engineenng Technical Society, and tested high school students from all over the state in math. English, physics, chemistry, biology, pocket calculators, and engineenng graphics. The team captured first place in the district competition held at B.A.C.. then went on to claim the state championship at the University of Illinois. Individual winners in the state testing were. Mike Bell, 2nd place at state in math, and Bndgette Hayes. 1st place at state in biology. They received their honors after competing against 300 other contestants. Dave Brandt, and Linda Tate. 1980 RETIREES William DuHadway Sam Jones Charles ''Sam'' Jones taught English for 25 years at both Belleville High Schools. He was chairman of the Bellville East English Department for ten years. His retirement plans are indefinite, but he is surely looking forward to new horizons. Jones has directed one act plays and coached the Individual Events team, as well as manning the public address system for East home football games. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from Kansas University and his Master's Degree from Washington University. Bill DuHadway was a teacher for nineteen years. He taught science and math at Clark Jr. High in East St. Louis for five years. His service at East includes, teaching physical education for 14 years. DuHadway was also chairman of the physical education department for twelve years. In addition to teaching, DuHadway coached football, track, and girls' tennis. DuHadway earned his Bachelor's Degree from Southeast Missouri State, and his Master's Degree from S.I.U., Edwardsville. What’s your job as athletic director? Mr. Bechtold replied, Got an Hour? Many people don’t realize what a hectic and nerve-wracking job the athletic director has. Mr. Bechtold has been the A.D. at East for four years. He was a coach before becoming the athletic director. His duties and responsibilities include hiring of the coaches (to some extent); controlling the budget for equipment, transportation, and accomodations; attending Instructional Council sessions; organizing tickets for events; keeping inventory of equipment; making sure the gym and athletic fields are in good shape; organizing the various Belleville East Invitational Tournaments; hiring of officials; and making sure I.H.S.A. eligibility forms are turned in and I.H.S.A. standards are met. GASP!! Why would someone take such a job? It’s so much responsibility — and his office is across the hall from the weight room — YUCK! Well, Mr. Bechtold loves kids and that is obvious to all of his students. He is an excellent social studies teacher and he says that he enjoys teaching. Participating in athletics gives students experience and knowledge they can’t learn in the classroom. The athletic programs at East are very important to many students. With a 16 and 3 record, the swingers entered the District competition apprehensively — after all. two of the best teams in the area were in their district, West and Edwardsville. The mighty Lancers fared well, placing 2nd and qualifying for the Sectional Tournament. At Sectionals, the team even surprised themselves, placing second!! ON TO STATE! At the state meet, the team tied for sixteenth. Coach Jerry Dunn is looking forward to next year too — his top five players are returning. The 1980 season looks equally promising. 247 2 8 BIOHJ-TEAM ATHLETES Juniors Sue Nations and Barbara Obst competed in the I.H.S.A. Girls' Diving Districts. Sue placed 5th and Barbara placed 3rd. Barbara qualified for the State Diving Meet and went on to represent East well. Seniors Eva Carter and Cindy Duecker competed in the I.H.S.A. Girls' Golf Districts. Eva placed 3rd, while Cindy place 6th, just missing a qualifying spot. Eva went on to the Sectional Meet and tied for 10th with 18 hole score of 87.
