VALENTINE’S DAY by Louie Hocks and Barb Swierczek Valentine’s Day is: accidently leaning on the horn of the car while saying goodnight on your first date. Valentine’s Day is: candy hearts, red and white colors and brightly colored flowers. Valentine ' s Day is the first real sign of spring after a long hard winter. With the warmer weath¬ er on its way. people tend to be happier, friend¬ lier and the atmosphere is all around pleasant. Valentine ' s Day is a day set aside for two peo¬ ple who want to show their feelings for one an¬ other. Guys show their feelings by candy, flowers and sometimes even a kiss. Girls show their af¬ fections by accepting the guy’s gifts. It’s cupid’s busiest day of the year. The custom of sending Valentines originated in France and England. It was the fourteenth night of the second month when spring is said to be on its way. The name “Valentine’s Day’’ came about when two well-known priests with the same last name, Valentine, died on the same day. Feb. 14. In memory of these two men. Feb. 14 is now referred to as Valentine ' s Day. We celebrated Valentine’s Day this year to let someone know you really care. It’s the day of the year you can’t miss, so give your valentine sweetheart a special kiss. WINTER WONDERS When the coolness of a northern atmosphere sets in, the spirit of a Lancer leads to friendly ness and warmth. RELIVE THE RHYTHM OF 79 To relive the sounds of a passing year; To recall the glamour of slamming lockers and shuffling footsteps; To hear the soft strains of the Belleville East Hymn; To know again the sound of 2,500 individuals uniting under one name. To plant one foot into the searching 79; To remember the moments of the in between year, relating in some way to every event. To relive the rhythm of East in 1979. 39 UNITED In honor of United Nations week, students from fifteen Southern Illinois High Schools held mock sessions of the Unit¬ ed Nations in the McKendree College Gymnasium. [)La • 3 o v cbo rtl Expression of identity comes nat¬ urally. Clothes and friends are the most obvious forms of self expres¬ sion, but there are other ways to express a personality. At times it is necessary to leave the group and do something with¬ out help or influence from anyone else. Creating something alone is difficult yet satisfying when feelings are expressed in original, personal ways. Without expression, personality is meaningless, and nothing remains of a person except a mass of num¬ bers, credits, and labels, with no dis¬ tinction between individuals. m - •- I . THOMAS Mr. O.C. (Ogle) Thomas has taught for some 43 years. He began his teaching at Modesto High School in Illinois. Mr. Thomas has taught almost every subject there is, so I am not going to enumerate them. He has an associate arts degree from Graceland College in Iowa, a bach¬ elor’s of science in education from Northwest Missouri State and a master’s of science in education from Western Illinois University. Mr. Thomas came to Belleville Township High School in 1962 as a dean. Mr. Thomas has always been vitally concerned with students and their activities, having been active as a student council sponsor, a coach, and many other student activities. I think that you could say that Mr. Thomas has jlways been a stu¬ dent advocate and I am sure will continue to support the activities of students and our high school. (Mr. McCoy) Mrs. Ruth Merz is a graduate of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale with a bache¬ lor’s degree in education. She has a master of arts degree from Washington University in St. Louis. She began her teaching in 1947 in the East St. Louis School system and continued in the East St. Louis system until 1968, at which time she came to Belleville East as a social studies teacher. Miss Merz has taught for 32 years. Miss Merz has always been a person who has desired for academic excellence. She has dedicated her¬ self to teaching and to the professionalism that is necessary for teaching. She has always worked with her students to have them achieve at the highest academic standards of which they were capable. I would say that Miss Merz typifies one of our outstanding teachers in Illinois and in the United States. (Mr. McCoy) Qo.QM. Since the beginning of the year, the girls’ basketball team has been giving stiff opposition to the area teams. When asked about the team’s advancement since the start of the season. Coach James McHaney replied. “They are improving more rapidly than I jectedl on iden Jj Dedication is the word for matmen b Tony Smnllmon The Belleville East matmen are already hard at work preparing for the upcoming season. Dedication and desire are the two words that describe the wrestlers as they are hard at work trying to meet their weight classes. Leading the team this year are co-captains Mike Geller and Tracy Smith. Coach Urban Baum feels Mike, Tracy, and Mark Sullivan all could be state competitors with this year’s experience under their belts. Other varsity prospects are Jon Veneir, 126 pounds; Keith Beyersdorfer, 138 pounds; Chris Steele, 132 pounds; Mark Sullivan, 145 pounds; Rick Schultz, 185 pounds; and Gary Hassal, heavyweight. The team’s first match is a triple dual meet against Murphysboro, Carbondale, and Lincoln of East St. Louis on Dec. 2. majority of the girls are n comers to the team.” With the season half over, th record now stands at 7-2. On the team ' s greatest assets their ability to hold up un¬ pressure. “The girls will give up. They keep hustling,’’ stated Cog McHaney. Although tot competition still lies ahead the lady Lancers, Cog McHaney asserts. We i capable of beating aim anyone.” After playing three gan this past week, the girls hf only two remaining ho games. They play host to E St. Louis on Feb. 26 and West March 8. The girls will be us the remaining schedule to tu up for regional play slated start on March 12. Fern ado Gom Inexperience blocks wrestlers ' success b Tonv Smallmon Although the East matmen have the desire to win, they have found inexperience as the main stumbling block to a super season. With only three seniors and three juniors on the squad. Coach Urban Baum has found his wrestlers with their backs on the mat more than he would like. Seniors Mike Geller, 20-3, Gary Hassell, 14-7, and Mark Sullivan. 18-3, have led the team to a respectable 6-4 record. However, the Lancer mat mentor hopes that the record will continue to improve as Lady Experience adds a development. Lancers hopes were furthe diminished when the squad lo the state-bound services c veteran Tracy Smith. Juniors Chris Steele, Eddi B iden and Steve Marxer pulle their weight through the earli part of the season. Freshma Jim Tiemann wrestled to a 10 season and shows definite sigr of a winner. The team has matches wit Collinsville and Centralia le on the agenda and then loc forward to drawing upon th; new found wealth of experiem as they prepare for the tou namont ahead. Girls ' tennis sweeps |to stunning season by Hob Vi nMi When watching the East girls’ tennis team at the beginning of the season there was a feeling that they were going to be good. Well, now there’s no doubt about it, the East netters record stands at a stunning 15-0 and they’re going for districts. In asking Coach William DuHadway to single out a few outstanding players, he found it hard to do considering people like Sue Pulley, who has a 14-2 singles record, highly com¬ petitive Eva Carter, who has a 12-2 singlesrecord. Singles competition standouts also include Alison Dickerson’s 10-2 record and Nai y Kassebaum’s 9-2. Doubles competition can’t be understated either. The team work of Jo Ivester and Lisa Schmidt has accounted for 24 of East’s doubles wins. “We’ve got as good a chance as anybody to win the district tournament; don’t count us out for a second,” said Caoch DuHadway. The real tennis players in the district tour¬ nament are going to be represented by East. O’Fallon and | Althoff according to the coach. In their last match before districts against Althoff. the East netters, as usual, won it with a score of 4-3. In the singles I competition, the winners were Sue Pulley over Kelley Gassaway 6-1. 6-7. 6-1; Eva Carter beat Marby Whitehead 6- 4. 6-3 and Nancy Kassebaum smeared Nancy Lynn 6-2. 6-1. The two youngest members of the team, Michelle Vinona and Darlene Arnold were also doubles victors when they won their match 7-5. 6-4. Frustration-key word of volleyball season b I.imu ll« r Frustration and wonderment seems to be the key words when trying to sum up this year’s Lancer volleyball squad “I really don’t understand why we’re not winning ball games, they play beautifully in prac¬ tice,” says coach Mary Harris. The team’s only victory was the first game of the season against Cahokia and they’ve played six games since. Lisa Leonard, this year’s leading Soccer potential ahead By Tony Smallimin The East soccer squad will I start off the season with hopes of a conference championship birth. However, Coach Phil Aleman feels the team hasn’t played to its capability and needs more confidence in its | skills. Her varisty teammates include seniors Debbie Murphy, Anne Weitsman and Patti Baker, junior Lori Larson and sophomore Connie Becherer. Although sophomore Susan Goldschmidt doesn’t start, she’s been seeing a lot of action. “She is a more consistent spiker and server,” says coach Harris. Even though the past few weeks have been disappointing. Coach Harris still feels it won’t be long before things start to turn around. “We’ve been playing some very tough teams and every game we look better than the game before,” adds coach Harris. The team has been lucky in that they’ve had no injuries and are still practicing a tough four hours a day. Icy weather doesn ' t slow soccer team bv Davf Sullivan Snow and colder weather tend to move most sporting activities inside during the winter months, but a group of hardy young men are now playing soccer in this inclement weather. They play in the St. Louis Youth Soccer Association, one of the better leagues of Missouri. Soccer players from East make up a team in this league, and the squad is sponsored by Kassly’s Mortuary. The competition in this Missouri league is very tough. Competing in the 19-and-under division means playing many older and more experienced teams and the Lancer squad is still looking for their first win. Mr. Vic Alarcon, a member of an Olympic team from Chile, is the coach of the squad. The winter league of the St. Louis Youth Soccer Association has just recently been com¬ pleted, but the soccer team from East just can’t seem to get enough of the United State’s fastest growing sport. They will enter a spring league now in the process of being formed. Speed and strength Kaesberg ' s objectives Kendra Kaesberg will represent East for the second consecutive year in the Illinois High School Association district swim meet. The Belleville East senior will compete in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events in the meet. Both of these events require more strength than endurance; therefore, speed is what Kendra strives towards. Districts will be held in Quincy, III., on Feb. 17. If she places well there, she will advance to the state meet in Chicago. Accompanying Kendra will be sophomore Sue Nations, who is competing in the diving competition. Miss Geraldine Johnson, a member of the P.E. department, will sponsor the students at the meet. Kendra works out hard at the Oakhill Racquet Club about five times a weak. She is coached by Kris Odenwald. Kendra’s training even includes working with weights for strength. Last summer, swimming for Oakhill in the Mid-West A.A.U. competition, Kendra brought back three third place finishes and one sixth place finish. The sophomore Lancers, who seem to have some real talent on the team, have a record of 7- 2 . The freshmen Lancers have a record not to be sneezed at. It wasn’t until their fourth game that an opponent was able to scorr upon them. by Tony Suiulliuoii East wrestlers started their season with a bang after an explosive triple-dual victory over Carbondale, Murphysboro and Lincoln of East St. Louis. The team has accumulated a 5-2 record with additional wins over Carlinville and Ed- wardsville. Staggering losses were suffered to Mascoutah and Granite City North. The team suffers in some of the lower weight class, but has one of the strongest upper classes in the area. The team’s hopes this year will be riding on seniors Tracy Smith. Mike Geller. Mark Sullivan and Gary Hassall. Co-captain Tracy Smith is the only Lancer undefeated this year. Tracy has three pins and a 7-0 record. Co-captain Mike Geller has come on strong with a 6-1 record. Mike has also accumulated three pins. Mark Sullivan holds a 6-1 record and has two pins to his name. Gary Hassall has shown some good skills by racking up a 6-1 record with three pins.
