Mr. McHaney and his whole team, although probably very tired, seem to be doing a great job Mr. James McHaney. the music man of Belleville East, is now in his first year of coaching the girls' basketball team. He has had experience in coaching girls, though; he's coached Powder puff football for many years. Through that, he’s learned that girls can be very hard working and dedicated. They must be, to get up and be at school by 6:30 every school day! Mr. McHaney thinks the whole team shows promise and in future years the girl athletes will be even better as the junior highs start girls' sports programs. “If you're winning or losing, it doesn't matter, as long as you're always caring. — Kathy Erkman Junior Varsity Cheerleaders Ms. Margo Belt, Coach “Cheerleading is blood, sweat, tears, and spirit. In this year of expansion. I've tried to show the girls that teamwork is essential and that their goal should be to show the whole school that it's fun to be a Lancer.’’ — Ms. Margo Belt Before the regular season started, the varsity squad went to NCA Camp. National Cheerleaders Association. They captured six first place ribbons and a spirit stick. The squad also won the spirit award which the other squads vote on for the most spirited, friendliest, and most helpful squad. Cheerleading came and gone, it was a fantastic year because everyone worked together and became good friends, good-luck to the girls next year. — Shari Rasp Top to Bottom: Laura Cassady. Debate is rewarding in the many skills a person can aquire. Debaters learn speaking, organizational and researching qualities. Over all. debate is a good experience. “Debate is the most educational experience of any class I’ve taken. It teaches how to communicate effectively; how to think on your feet; and. most importantly for college, it teaches you in-depth research techniques so that I can walk into any library and be able to find a world of information. One of the other aspects of debate, not in terms of education, is that it demands an affirmative, confident, cocky attitude which carries over into your every day reactions.” — George Percivall III 58 Bev McKarracher. We’ve had so many problems, but yet we made it through all of them and we hope you're satisfied with our results. We knew the book would be very different from all other books from the beginning of the year. We tried to be creative and at the same time stay within our theme of a filing cabinet. We did our best. We had fun, made new friends, worked until midnight before deadlines, and enjoyed almost every minute. All in all. it was an experience that both us will always remember.’ Ann: She has good taste in boys. Bill: He has the best set of choppers on the staff. Carla: She’s a cheet-o freak, but very dependable. Fred: Cool as an eskimo at the equator. Jan: Christmas vacation wouldn’t have been the same without you and yours. Janet: AD stands for after deadline. Jim: Always has optimism, never pictures. Kyle: Come visit us sometime-leave your sword at home. Laura: Her Love-life is great; her radiator perch couldn't take any more. Mary: Being $3,000.00 in debt isn’t so serious, lady. Barb: Confidence: the feeling you have before you really understand the situation. Darla: Even though she’s short, she has some pretty good ideas. Besides fun the clubs give you an opportunity to taste new foods from foreign countries and have new and interesting experiences that may teach you a bit of culture and understanding. Hearing may not be the medium needed to understand these activities. The fact is you've got to see them to believe them. Maybe you have been doing them to believe them. Maybe they can't be believed at all! Have you ever drank Witchazel. for example, or ridden on a clothes rack down the hall? Perhaps you've been attacked by the green-faced monster or discussed politics with a scarecrow. If so. you’re susceptible to the creative phenomenon known as theatre! Lights. Camera. It's a plane! It's lunch? Cafeteria lunches have earned a special place in every students’ life. Whether it be the campus-famous pickle and ketchup with hamburger dinner, or any of the other numerous menus, everyone seems to dread the lunch mod if it's to be spent in the cafeteria. The food can provide entertainment at times though: guessing games, long-distance pea-shooting, etc. . . . Many students have taken advantage of this as you can see by looking closely at the ceiling. The food isn't really that bad; it's actually edible if you can find a fork that isn’t permanently malformed! As their screeches break glasses and low tones imitate frogs, some of the singers are preparing to follow Mr. McHaney's footsteps and become teachers. Others have ideas of becoming another Barbra Streisand (or Barry Manilow) but most are there just for the fun of singing. The entire community enjoys our various musical groups throughout the year at school assemblies, concerts, and at other public appearances. Our school has one of the most beautiful campuses in the area, and the students and faculty should be very proud of it. Our Ecology Club has added wood-chip trails to solve our problem of erosion and the janitors do a good job keeping our campus clear of snow, high grass, litter and even the toilet paper that sometimes accumulates before football games. With our huge field, we have a chance to participate in almost any sport, from archery to football. Besides our natural beauty, we also have modern buildings with windows in every class to daydream out of, a great gym to cheer the Lancers on to victory and the neatest place around . . . our central terrace. There you may enjoy a quick sno-cone between classes, people watch, study, or even be a jock around the flagpole. With so much going for this school, no wonder EAST IS BEST! Pep rallies, phantoms, cheerleaders . . . are all a part of victory! Football involves not only the faculty, students and the players themselves but also parents. One game, in fact, the players’ fathers were allowed to sit on the bench. If the fathers were able to put aside their fears of being run over by players coming off the field, they got another perspective of the strategic game. Two of the Lancers' most loyal fans, Charles and Phyllis Woodford, have helped the Belleville East Athletes become their best. Mr. Woodford was one of the founders and the first president of the Lancer Booster Club organized in the fall of 1973. The club’s purpose is to help provide physical and financial assistance to the athletic department of East by buying equipment and lending their moral support at Lancer games. Mr. Woodford, presently serving as the secretary of the club, can be found at every pancake supper, bake sale, flea market, raffle or whatever other project the club is involved in at the minute. He thinks he has missed only two football games and six basketball games since the beginning of the Lancers back in 1966. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Woodford and our Lancer Booster Club! The cafeteria was dull because the juke-box was out of order, and the munchie machine in R-node was out of cheese Doritos. It is at times like these that one wishes to find the reported haven of entertainment for gambling, meeting interesting people, relaxing, etc.. . . Surprisingly enough, such an area does exist on campus. In fact, it has its own society and design of hallways, sitting rooms, as well as the famous penny-pitching area. Have you ever heard of the creek? (Maybe I II see you there sometime?) T-shirt slogan day. the coke party, a disco dance, and teacher appreciation day were only a few of the activities held during the week. Many of the most memorable events, such as the queen coronation, class float judging, the parade, the class skits and the football game were held on the final day. The originality and comedy of the class skits were captured above as the sophomores followed the theme of East is Heaven in 77”. 4 Class Of ’81 la-Mc Sandy lacona Laura Isselhard Gary Jacob Ursula Jagels Jeffrey Johns Tina Johnson Dana Jones Jim Jouglard Laura Judd Martha Kaeser Tracey Kage Heidi Kamhoot Terry Kammler Bob Kampmeyer Phyllis Kapp Susan Kasten Kim Keeling Gail Kelly Donna Kemper Julie Kempf Bernadette Kern Mark Kern Michele Kern Tim Kern Heidi Kernzer Paul King Debbie Klien Brian Knapp David Knoebel Kathy Koch Jack Koenig Gary Konkel Tim Korte Dana Kramer Kathie Krupp Scott Kuehl Randy Kuhl Steve Kunz Martha Kurtz Michelle Lacroix Mike Laing Diana Landry Paula Lanter Jeffrey Larson Phuong Le Laurie Lefringhouse Mike Lehnen Susan Leidenheimer 263 Chris Oldnettle Dan J.
