The first day of find¬ ing lockers, classes, johns, and eating cafeteria food could scare anyone. Remember? But, actually it all starts before that first 8:30 whistle blows. You know what I ' m talking about. The day your schedule arrives. Your mom ' s threatening to cut off your supply of peanut butter if the phone rings one more time. Your ear ' s so sore and your mouth ' s so dry, but you just have to call up Karen to see when she eats lunch, and ask Dan if you can borrow his locker again this year. Every year it ' s the same; things never change. Then the big day arrives. That first day of school. The day your dreams come true. . . or should I say night¬ mares?. .. It ' s horrible. Everyone ' s really restless, trying to get kids down on the floor and smearing lipstick on them. The bus driver warns, ' it isn ' t going to be like it was last year, ' b ut everyone knows it will be. Paula David I wore a dress! The fall play this year, which was presented October 17, 18, and 19, and which is annually directed by Charles Zeller, was William Shakes¬ peare ' s MACBETH. This was the first time that a Shakesperean play had ever been attempted on the East Stage. A fine set was designed by Mr. Ron Isom, who was able to transpose small B100 into a medieval castle. The costumes worn in the production, which ranged from medieval evening gowns to suits of armor, to witch outfits, were ordered from Ead ' s Costume Company in New York. The play was certainly a success; for the first time in East ' s history, the fall play was sold out all three nights. ii © II i v. And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair. And having perhaps the better claim. Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I • I took the one less traveled by And that has made all the difference. On Wednesday, March 19, a new face appeared in the Belleville East gymnasium, that of Professor George Walter from Lawerence Uni¬ versity. He was to deliver one of the most capturing speeches ever heard on the East campus; the topic: Goof-off As a Way of Life.” In a few quick, sword-like thrusts Professor Walter had speared the consciences of those students who hide out from life and those who sell out their life for simply material reward. Within moments he had captured the entire audience with this driving force and unusual appeal. To wind up his talk, he brought in the concept of being worthy of becoming free men in a free society. At the conclusion of Dr. Walter ' s speech, the spellbound audience broke into an over¬ whelming round of applause, followed closely by a standing ovation. A speech well thought- out, well written, and well delivered is a joy to behold! 35 C hrli tmaij n 1. Mr. Thomas at Christmas Assembly 2. Lancerclaus 3. Christmas Dance 4. McCoy 1 • ' S A Basketball Eaststars Experience may not be the word associated with this year ' s 1974-75 basketball team, since Bill Brinkman was the only returning varsity letterman; however, the four fresh faces inserted in the starting line-up this season appeared promising. The senior class was represented by Bill Brinkman and Bob Haida, while juniors on the team were Kyle Fink, Alan Hursey, and Joe Slimack. Gary Haverman, a sophomore, rounded off the list of names with which coach Don Ottness had to work this year. With the tallest player on the team measuring in at 6 ' 3 , the squad had to hustle in order to compete in the Southwestern Conference in which the bigger team usually dominates. The Lancers competed in two tournaments over the course of the year. They were the Carbondale Holiday Tournament and the Belleville East Invita¬ tional Tournament. - Dale Lindhorst V M Wrestlers f 74-’75 For years wrestling has taken a back seat to the more popular winter sport, basketball. This year East had a wealth of experienced varsity wrestlers. With many grapplers ' return from last year ' s varsity team, Coach Urban Baum had the solid nucleus of a winner. Perennial varsity starter, Bob Baldwin, who wrestled at 155 pounds, according to most area coaches and ex¬ perts, had a very good chance to capture the state championship in his weight class. Other key performers were: Whit Dickerson, 98 pounds, Boyd Breeding, 105; Rick Palmer, 112; Herb Jagels, 119; Stan Dickerson, 126; John Cange, 132; Jim Sobieralski, 138; Eric Fenner, 145; Jeff Holcomb, 167; Ron Koch, 185; and Roger Cook, heavyweight. With the Blue Cheer girls yelling for them at every match, they had no confidence or moral support problems. - Dale Lindhorst v §■ 7 The following wrestlers competed at state: Bob Baldwin Jeff Holcomb Rick Palmer Herb Jagels Dan Murphy Eric Fenner Wrestlers return home to Belleville after state competition. We would like to thank the wrestlers and the coaches for all the memories-- let ' s hope the good times always out¬ weigh the bad. The wrestlers deserved a warm welcome home after their struggle at state. Margo Belt, Bluecheer sponsor 1 V Departments Honor Top Students Every year the faculty of each department selects five students to honor for departmental achievements. From these five, one is chosen as the outstanding student. All five students, though, were honored at the all¬ school Departmental Honor Assembly, May 20. The student selected as the outstanding in their department also receives a pin denoting the honor as well as their name engraved on a plaque which is displayed in the department. JlUUli ♦ ♦ ♦♦♦♦♦♦♦+ IP The Individual E §jhts Team once again enjoyed its most outstanding season as it dominat ed many Southern! Illinois and St. Louis area tournaments and captured honors at North¬ ern Illinois cori B as well. Team honors indjded 1st place in the Greater St. Louis Speech Association for the 2nd consecutive year, [1st place at O ' Fallon, 2nd place at Districts, 2nd at Belleville West, 2nd at Waterloo, 2nd ai Logan, 4th at Normal and 7th at Wheaton Central, a tournament which featured the Chicago area ' s ten best I E. teams. 54 East students took part in I.E.this year and brought home many awards. Over 100 individual trophies, certificate, medals and plaques were won by East I.E. students over the course of the season. Leading the squad was team captain Vicky Seavert who won first place on seven different occasions during the year. Also posting banner years were AI Sanders, Elaine Feher and Steve Fahey. Over half of the Squad returns in 1975-1976, so hopes are high for still greater accomplishments next year by the I.E. team. Being in I.E. has been a fantastic experience for me. B ides getting to know my own team mates better, I have met many people from different schools who are just as wonderful as my friends !r m East. Paula David I won ' t conform to other peoples ' ideas of what I shoull be, for I shall always strive harder to fie an individual. In my efforts, I have learn¬ ed how to communicate with people, and this is the proless in which we are able to better the stability of each others lives. Accepting re¬ sponsibility, accepting defeat, accepting victory.. .this is Individual Events. Vicjfry Seavers E Wiat carries little metal boxes, gets to bed at 7:30 a.m. ' and up at 4:30 a.m., spends half its life in a yellow school bus and the other half telling people the ' extrapolate ' is 1 not a dirty word? As anyone connected with the speech teams will tell you: a debater. And despite all their travels the debate team always had enough strength to bring home trophies; 35 this year to be exact, a record for any East debate squad. Indeed, East debate has had one of its best, if not the best, seasons ever. The team members attended 20 tournaments this year traveling some 5,000 miles, and competing with nearly 150 other schools. One reason East ' s success in debate has been so surprising is that at the start of the year only two of the squad members had any previous experience. A great part of the recognition for the squads glory should go to Mr. Snively, the debate sponsor and all-around derelict. Mr. Snively described the teams season as, Tremendous! The year ' s debate topic. Resolved: That the United States Should Significantly change the Method of Selecting Presidential and Vice Presi¬ dential Candidates. Members of the Squad on the varsity level include Tom Tharp, Rick Foster, Susan Stiehl and Eric Rhein. They also at¬ tended the Illinois Speech and Theater As. finals for debate. Good luck, debators! Keep haulin ' home the hardware! TOM SUE RICK ERIC The Ecstasy and the Agony The air was brisk on the morning of March 1st as a group of actors and technicians began to arrive at C node on Belleville East ' s cam¬ pus. As they arrived, a sense of excited expectancy prevailed through the hall way. Each had been working eight weeks toward this moment and now it had come. Eight weeks of memorizing words to say, places to be, feelings to express, tears and sweat. Eight weeks of hammering nails, cutting wood, painting colors, fitting scenery, and tightening bolts. Eight weeks of gathering sheets, cutting and sewing costumes, fitting bodies, coloring fabrics, needles, thread, and pins. It had all passed a moment ago, and now they were ready. One by one the actors fitted into their turtlenecks and tights. These needed to be put on now, to save time. One by one the techni¬ cians checked and double checked their equipment. The truck was loaded the night before; double check it anyway. The make-up was packed the day before; double check it. The costumes were washed and ironed last night. Are they all here? Double check. Soon, a yellow bus rumbled onto the parking lot, stopped by the bridge, and opened its narrow doors expectantly. It was bound for Granite City South High School. It too had a role to play for it was the transition from East to South; from eight weeks of prepar¬ ation to performance. The cast and crew boarded and the trip began. Each person went over in his or her mind the responsibilities. Lines were rectied. Movement was thought through. Scenery pieces were visualized on stage. All of the artistic efforts were coming together. The play was beginning to take form. The bus stopped. They had arrived. The make-up crew got out the make-up and the actors began their characters. The set crew lo¬ cated where the scenery was to be unloaded and the truck moved into position. The costume crew found the dressing room and waited for the actors. Energy was flowing and each person had a felling that the moment had arrived. The actors moved from the bus to the dressing room. At the same time the scenery was moved on stage. The emotional strain was mounting. Soon it would burst, at the draw of the curtain, into the contest performance. Concentrate. Let ' s do it together. Keep energy high. It had come. The exact moment that all had been striving for. The house lights dimmned, the work lights went out, the curtained opened, the stage lights came up, and Oedipus Rex unfolded before the eyes of the audience and the judges. My children. Why do you crowd and wait at my alters? It was going good. Keep the pace. We can ' t go overtime. The feeling grew. It ' s terriffic! The best so far. Keep concentrating. Don ' t drop the cues. The play goes on. Why is there no light? Its almost over. We ' re all right. The feeling runs deep. The performance is powerful. ,. .than a life in which there has been no anger and no pain. The curtain closes. The lights go out. It ' s over. We ' ve done it! The play has happened. A sigh is felt as each touches the other as if to express appreciation for their part in the whole process. This was a great experience! Slowly the tension winds down. It will mount again during the awards presentation, but for now the job was done. The actors re¬ move their masks and costumes and the crews pack them away. The scenery is taken down and put on the truck. It was a time of release. Fourth place?????!!!!! What do they mean fourth place?? There must be some mistake! We were better than that! The bus, with the truck be¬ hind it, headed home. The atmosphere was gloomy. Each tried to com¬ fort the other in vain. Fourth place? It was a nightmare. How could they do that to us? We were good and we weren ' t the only ones who thought so! As the group arrived back at East ' s campus and the cast and crew of Oedipus Rex unloaded the fragments of the show, the feeling of frustration and helplessness permeated the atmosphere. They had tried. The experience of bitter defeat was felt almost like the tragedy they had acted out. Yet, in the defeat, each felt a belonging to each other. Their defeat had made them stronger together. The pains and the heartaches were signs of a certain kind of growing. In fact, the growing pains of life. They had indeed experienced life in its most worthwhile form. The ecstasy of a good performance, the agony of defeat, and a hope for the future. Each and every person is to be commended for their part in Oedipus Rex . It was an event worthwhile. It was a risk worth taking. As long as worthwhile risks are taken, life is more meaningful. If risks do not cum- mulate at times in defeat, the highest joys of victory will never be known. That is what drama teaches us. That is one lesson of life. BELLEVILLE - Bob Baldwin this year has developed a rather important skill to his sport for the first time He finally has learned how to wrestle. Undoubtedly, this might sound like a pretty silly thing to say about one of Belleville’s top high school wrestlers. But his Belle¬ ville East wrestling Coach Urban Baum insists it is true. Yes, Baldwin finished with a 29-3 record last year and, yes, he took home a third place in the state sectional tournament and, yes, he collected 11 pins en route. Unfortunately, the 155-pound Lan¬ cer senior never really learned how to wrestle. But that’s all changed this year, ' Baum quickly adds. Already Baldwin has racked up an 18-0 record this season. And Baum amuses himself by trying to fig¬ ure out who might stop him from the state crown this year. Or, if indeed, he can be stopped. “This year he’s got it,” Baum said. “He knows how to wrestle. He doesn’t make those errors he’s. made the past three years. In fact, he almost wrestles flaw¬ lessly. “Last year he was 29-3, Baum added. But he didn’t have the skills down and he lost a couple of matches because he didn’t- know how to wrestle. Now he’s probably the best — not just because he wins but because he has such deft moves.” Baldwin himself says the im¬ provement was mandatory if he were to follow up on last year’s accomplishments. “I had to try to improve from last year because it seemed everybody was catching on to me,” he said. “Like I was just trying to flip more last year. So I just try to wrestle this year. I think I’ve improved on my takedowns. I guess that’s the main thing I’ve improved upon. But whether it was the flu he’s been battling the past couple of days or modesty or what, Bald¬ win anything but boasted about his 63-9-1 record in three years as a Lancer varsity wrestler. “I like to move quickly on the mats, but sometimes, I don’t do it so good,” he said, describing his strategy. “Actually, I should have gone to state last year. I 220 News Democrat spotlights Bob Baldwin ' s achievements, shortly before his tragic death on April 26, 1975. n finally learns how to ;uess I was sick, but I really an’t make any excuses.” Baldwin tried out for wrestling is a freshman, he says simply, ecause, “it was just an extra port for me.” He was 9-4 on the unior varsity team that first year md was just beginning to learn he rudiments of the sport. His arly success, in fact, derived rom his experience with judo. “He really wasn’t a great fresh¬ en,” Baum reflected. “But he ad competed in judo and that’s yhere he got his competitive spir- ’• It was something that gave im an advantage on leverage, ut he was a bad wrestler. As freshman, he beat them on competitive spirit and, possibly, ■ balance.” • As his experience grew, so did his success. As a sophomore, he wrestled a couple of matches with the JV squad, but quickly, was moved to varsity, where he posted a 16-6-1 mark. In addition, he finished first in the Southwes¬ tern Conference tournament and second in the district. To highlight his 29-3 season as a junior, Baldwin picked up a first place in the Granite City Holiday Tournament, and seconds in the conference and district tournaments. In three years, he has picked up just a fraction less than half of his victories on pins. He himself has yet to be pinned. “He’s only had nine pins in 18 matches this year, Baum said. “He gets them in a lot of trouble. •He’s had 25 near falls, but he hasn’t been too lucky about get¬ ting the mat slapped.” The list of statistics goes on and on. “He’s had 21 takedowns to none against,” Baum says. “He’s had 25 near falls to none against. One guy has gotten a reversal on him but the rest can’t do a thing with the guy. He’s prob¬ ably the best all-around wrestler we’ve had as far as moves and all-around ability.” The last major challenge for Baldwin this season remains the state tournament. And Bald¬ win may be meeting the biggest roadblock to that goal if and when he meets Granite City South’s Brian Wilson this weekend in the conference tournament. Wilson has been wrestling at 167 all sea¬ son, but is trying to make it down to_155 for the tournament. “If Bob were to beat him, there would be a pretty good chance for Bob to win state,” Baum said. “Yet even if he loses, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for Bob to place high wrestle in state.” Baum finally adds with an air of certainty, “Bob’s going to place in the top three at state.” .After graduation this spring, Baldwin says he hopes to continue his sport in college, even though he still doesn’t know where he’s going. “Probably I will,” Baldwin says. “I’ve had a few offers from different colleges and that, but I haven’t made up my mind yet.” But wherever he goes, Baum is confident of Baldwin’s chances. He likes Baldwin’s attitude. “You don’t have to hit him on the head with a club to make him try a new move, Baum said. “He picks it up fast.” This comes despite a minor pet peeve of Baldwin’s. Practice. “I don’t like the practices, but the matches are okay,” says the wrestler, who has gone from 119 pounds as a freshman to 132 as a sophomore to 145 as a junior to 155 this year. “I just try to keep going to get through practice.” But practice makes perfect, as they say. And perfect is what the 18-0 Baldwin has been all season. Now that he has learned how to wrestle, of course. Most students spend many full study periods, as well as class periods, in the lab. Experiments carried on here range from simple titrations to qualitative analysis. Simple titrations, however, can still be frustrating. If one drop too much is titrated into the solution, it must be thrown out and the experiment must be started all over again. There¬ fore, perfecting laboratory techniques is notan easy task and many hours of laboratory work are often nec¬ essary to acquire these skills. As a result of their hard work, East ' s dedicated scientists will be able to com¬ pete on a high level with students from other high schools at college or vocational training school. . .MAKES PERFECT. . .BUT A CALCULATOR CAN ' T HURT EITHER! 264 Hill The math teams of Belleville East High School won three traveling trophies as the sophomore, junior, and senior classes took three first places at the Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville Mathematics Field Day. Teams from forty-two metropolitan area high schools competed for team trophies and scholarships to high ranking individuals at the S.I.U.E. meet. High scores on uniform tests given to all the entrants determined the winners of each class. A one-year tuition scholarship to S.I.U.E. was award¬ ed to East senior, Roger LeClair, in individual com¬ petition. Members of the winning sophomore team included Tim Paul, Carol Malec, Patty Winter, and Tom Francis, while the truimphant junior team was composed of Mark Brueggemann, John Edmondson, Paul Kronst, and Pat Walker. Roger LeClair, Charles Morris, Judy Roper, and Dave Wiltsie lead the senior team to victory. Each team is individually coached by one of East ' s math teachers. Aaron Phillips directs the seniors, while Sandra Spiritas is in charge of juniors, and the sophomores are instructed by Gerald Dunn. East students receiving individual honors included: Sophomores: Tim Paul, third; Patty Winter, honor¬ able mention. Juniors: Pat Walker, first; John Edmondson, se¬ cond; Mark Brueggemann, fourth. Seniors: Roger LeClair, third. The tournament was, needless to say, a huge success for the math department. The students and teachers involved in these field days give a great tribute to East. Hansen President, Purdue University “About eighteen months ago, the Army began to develop a bold, new concept in cooperative education. Project Ahead. “The program began at one university in the Midwest. Interest was so great the Army decided to expand it across the country. Today, the program involves more than 800 colleges and universities. And it’s still growing. “Project Ahead’s structure is basically simple. But its benefits to young people and their parents are enormous. “First of all, it is a unique individualized education plan. One that allows you to choose, if you qualify, an “alma mater” before you enlist. (Normally a participating school in your home area.) So no matter which college or colleges you attend while in the Army, you’ll know beforehand the courses you’ll need for credit at the school you want to graduate from. “Secondly, the Army provides financial aid. College courses are available to you while you’re in the Army. And the Army will pay up to 75% of the tuition for these courses. (After your enlist¬ ment’s over, you’ll be eligible for 36 months of financial assistance under the G.I. Bill.) “We, in the educational community, are enthusiastic about this new plan. In fact, many of us believe Project Ahead will be as important to young people entering the Army as the G.I. Bill has been to veterans’.’ TELEPHONE 6 ' fc 5387 JOHN W LYMER STAFF SERGEANT U S ARM RECRUITER U. S. ARMY RECRUITING STATION 309 EAST MAIN BELLEVILLE. Early one Saturday morning a small group of people got together in S200 to come up wit title for the 1975 Belleville East Yearbook. When Suddenly. . . CRASH! a bananna came crashing through the window. Written on the bananna was the message: Leave $200.00 and an Eskimo Pie under Mrs. Fries ' desk or we ' ll turn your Mr. Hotti a Hott dog. signed, Mr. X (So you won ' t know who I am) Cries of horror were heard throughout the room: L Oh my! i Oh no! What will happen to Beaver? No more swimming lessons! Realizing this was more than we could handle, we quickly dialed 9 for the main of operator. She immediately connected us with the Central Cigar Store where among t magazines on the rack we found SUPEREAST. We explained the disastrous situation him. He exclaimed, This is a job for SUPEREAST! Faster than the Rolling Stone, more powerful than the Lady ' s Home Journal, more popular than Popular Mechanics, SUPEREAST leaped from the magazine rack, taking several magazines with him, and fie directly to the Armour Meat factory in East St. Louis. Just in the lick of time, too! There, sandwiched between 2 buns, was Mr. Hott at the mer his preditors. Thinking quickly, SUPER EAST distributed dirty magazines to Mr. X and I notorious gang. As they stood gawking at the nude picutres of Tootsie Delight, SUPERE grabbed Mr. Hott out from the jaws of the gigantic Hott dog bun. Editorial Staff Meanwhile, back on campus, the Belleville East yearbook staff could only come up with and 2 box tops toward the $200.00 ransom. . .needless to say, we were happy to see Mr. back.
