The Lancers bounced back with a 17-13 win over Edwardsville, but went into the dol¬ drums again in a 13-0 loss at Alton. The following week, however, brought about the season ' s high point. Our best game all year was against Collinsville, Renn said. The Lancers rang up a 35-6 victory. They closed the season the following week with a 7-6 loss to East St. Louis. We played well in that game, too, Renn said. But we fumbled too much. And we were ahead of Althoff and West, but let them get off the hook. It was in those instances that Belleville East needed those big plays. (continued)

The Lancers nearly proved they were better than anyone really expected in the season ' s opener. They put on a thrilling, second-half rally to tie defending Missouri State Champ¬ ion Hazelwood 28-28. The Lancers were behind 28-14 at the half. Then, Belleville East blasted Roosevelt 28-6. But the problems started the next week. After holding a lead late in the game, the Lancers were tied by Althoff. Then they lost to Belleville West on a field goal in the final seconds. After a 22-0 whitewashing of Cahokia, the season ' s darkest day came on a sunny afternoon at Granite City South. The Warriors celebrated their homecoming by blasting the listless Belleville East squad 28-6. You ' d have to say that was our worst day, Renn said They really bombed us. We didn ' t play well at all. (continued)

Statistically, Belleville East fared better than its opponents. The Lancers outrushed their foes and, though outpassed, compiled more total offense. They outscored their opponents 166-125. Mike Schaab, senior halfback, finished as the Lancers ' top rusher with 595 yards on 103 carries, a 5.7 average. Part-time fullback Dave Cresswell picked up 306 yards and Paul Holland has 228. Holland ' s 6.0 average per rush topped the club. (continued)
