Students believe that with a little effort from other” students, some kind of a yearbook will come out at the end of the year. What they forget, or just don ' t know, is that there is hard work, energy, and a great amount of time going into each publication of a yearbook. The purpose of Another Year is to give you a lasting memory of the 1972-73 school year. We feel our late- night hours weren ' t wasted by trying to present this year to you. Whether the year was good or bad, it still was one more year at East. I hope we have given you another year, not just another yearbook. Taking history, Latin, and English, Francoise not only became familar with our subjects, but also came to know the natural friendliness of East students and faculty. Francoise was extremely interested in all aspects of our life and actively participated in everything she could. As she left, she lamented: It ' s such a pity that I must leave so soon. Foreign Exchange Trish Fransham is our foreign exchange student from New Zealand for the 1972-73 school year. Coming from the other side of the world does not seem to have been a burden for Trish. This year has been one of the greatest experiences of my life, but there are two things that bother me. One is the growing independence of American people from their neighbors; for example, this different society provided many people with the means to have several cars within a family and this is the beginning of an era where people no longer communicate with others because they do not need them. But I have met some great people here and I hope they will remember me as long as I remember them. dents Christmas at East Lancerclaus . . . two snow- ,, ice days during the first semester and the Sugar Plum Fantasy Christmas Dance {hjiM OM mo ' hnAJLfpfyt i)u U}AM 7 d ojaU flW hht MO 2 M I fl. baA -K) . d jjg) -jfa U jjy Ymad id cl Maj n frji L UL d QJUU r ftQ MVjLftWty LwM th. V S. K X o K 245 New Look For Rooms On Campus BY BARB FISCHER Belleville Township High School East In an effort to do away with the traditional drab, once- white walls, a few Belleville East High art students have taken up wall mural projects in the art buildings. James Colgan, art teacher and sponsor of the photography club, has had the idea of changing the overall appearance of the rooms for a long time. However, he didn’t have a chance to do anything about it. THAT CHANCE came up one day when he was teaching colors to a first-year art class. Two of his freshman students asked why all the walls in the school were white. “It seems they would be harder to keep clean,” they said. Then it came out in the open. The students asked if they could paint designs on three of the walls in that particular art room. Instructor Colgan said he didn’t have the authority to give them permission, so the students went to the principal. Principal Charles G. McCoy agreed to an experimental project on one wall. There were many steps involved to reach the finished product. The first wall they worked on, originally had a black¬ board on it. That wall had to be cleaned. Next a paint base called Gesul was used for the primer. Then designs were gath¬ ered from the students, with the help of instructor Colgan. Acrylic paints had to be mixed for desired colors. Bright col¬ ors such as purple, orange, blue, lime green, yellow and red were chosen along with basic black and white. STUDENTS INVOLVED included Becky Ford, Jean Living¬ stone, Sandy Kalbfleisch, Donna Ivester and Jan Gentch, all freshmen; Scott Spencer, senior, and Kathy Krug, junior. There are two “art headquarters” situated on East cam¬ pus, so naturally the idea spread to the other side, and seniors Lorie Sweitzer and Kathy Jones went to work on the walls in their art room. The mural they did was a line design with arrows in it. Lorie and Kathy went through basically the same procedures. They chose whites, yellows and browns for their colors. The “young artists” have plans to finish all three walls. Here are two views concerning them: One person feels that by painting all the walls in the same manner it may make the room too busy, because Jf the loud colors.” The other view is that “the last two walls should be painted in some co¬ ordinating color or colors without using a design.” THE CLASSROOMS at East are almost identical and stu¬ dents see certain advantages in the colorful murals. Some think the rooms are brighter and stand out from the other rooms. Some feel that by painting more murals around campus it would add a little color and variety to classes. Others think it is not suc.i a good idea for English, math or science classes. Still other suggestions are to paint the student lounge and stu¬ dent snack bar the same way. Students involved work long, hard hours but have fun doing the job. They tackle the work wholeheartedly and eager¬ ly with fullfilling results. 247 EAST DEBATE INVITATIONAL—FEBRUARY 23-24 Gail Thomas EAST Individual Events Diane Bernosky Alan Schneider and Barbara Mantle Alan Schneider Cindy Stratman 250 — Golden Boy March 8 , 9,10 251 January 27,1973 Peace Agreement Signed 252 JL.
