' - Joe Olsen Ralph Bell Pinky Davis Duane Wolfe manning were leading by four points 33 39 Then the Oilers stepped up to a whirlwind fin ish and gust nosed ahead as the whistle ended the game Our conference season started with a loss but the team was not in the least daunted Instead they were more determined that they would fight for a share in the con ference honors BELLEVILLE 53 NASHVILLE 40 When we played Nashville on the home court our Devils went on a scoring spree They played particularly clean ball and little foul ing was done by either side Vernon Vogt looped in Q0 points for our cagers and Joe Olsen also crowded the scoring honors with 17 counters BELLEVILLE 49 CATHEDRAL 36 In the first game of the two game series for the city championship our Devils played clean ly and determinedly They were never threat ened by the plucky Cathedral team Belleville s Davis and Koch of Cathedral fouled out Vernon Vogt again took high point honors with 17 In the runner up slot for Township were Joe Olsen and Pinky Davis Each made 10 points BELLEVILLE 45 EAST ST LOUIS 25 Our Devils won their first conference game of the season in two conference starts. And it was a source of great glee that our victory was over the B. T. H. S. bitter rivals the East St. Louis Flyers. Fans packed the home field house to the rafters and our Devils came through with a twenty-point margin of victory. It was an extremely fast game and our Devils completely outclassed the over-rated Flyers. Vernon Vogt paced the Township five with 18 points. XMAS TOURNAMENT AT MT VERNON On the Q7 Q8 and Q9th of December our Devils journeyed to Mt Vernon where they played brilliant ball and came home with third place out of the sixteen teams entered In the opening game our boys easily defeated University High Normal 54 32 In the sec ond game our Devils had the pleasure of eliminating the East St Louis Flyers whom they had gust beaten the week before This time the score was 38 to 29 In the third game in which our Devils participated they met the tournament hosts Mt Vernon Mt Vernon defeated our boys in the semi finals and since Pinckneyvnlle beat Herrin we met Herrin in the consolation game for third place Our boys displayed brilliant form and seized the game from Herrin Thus they had a tour record of three victories and one loss BELLEVILLE 31 ALTON 34 Our Devils played their third Conference game of the 44 45 season and lost it by three points They led in the last two quarters but in the final few minutes Alton suddenly flashed in front However hopes were still high for the Devils to begin pulling them selves up in conference action in the coming weeks BELLEVILLE 45 GRANITE CITY Q6 In the fourth conference game of the season our cagers knocked one of the three leaders from his top perch. That leader was Granite City, The Devils were leading by only three points at the half' they plunged ahead twenty- five points and took a nineteen-point lead. Vernon Vogt displayed fine form by racking up nineteen points and Joe Olsen took second honors with ten counters. Jm Brll Vernon Vogt Ke Brauer BELLEVILLE 59 MADISON 30 Our Devils broke loose in their fifth con ference game of the season and racked up 59 points at Madison The Devil Quintet was not too stingy with Madison for the Trojans garnered 30 points Pinky Davis netted 18 points to be high scorer BELLEVILLE 38 EDWARDSVILLE 37 The Devils of B T H S fought an uphill battle all of the way in this game and were losing in every quarter but the last The gym was packed and a wildly cheering crowd saw the game come roaring into the final quarter as Duane Wolfe dropped in a free throw for the winning marker Joe Olsen took point honors with 11 BELLEVI LLE 34-COLLI NSVILLE 43 The Devils had an off night on the home floor as the Collinsville Kahoks dropped the ball through the basket on every occasion. Collins- ville held the lead through every quarter as the Devils ball handling was exceptionally erratic. Joe Olsen played with about the only skill which the team displayed thus he took point honors again with 11. BELLEVILLE 38-WOODRIVER 36 Belleville moved into a third place tie with Woodriver as they eeked out a two-paint vic- tory over the Oilers in vengeance over their two-point loss earlier in the season. The Devils held a ten-point lead at the middle of the second quarter, but saw it whittled to a tie at the half. Although Ralph Bail was top man with 14 points, it was Duane Wolfe's field goal that clinched matters as the game ended. BELLEVILLE 42 MT VERNON 27 Scotts cagers were again out to revenge a previous defeat This time it was in answer to the 16 point defeat that Mt Vernon gave us in the semi finals on the Christmas tour The Devils started early and were never head ed as they romped away to a 15 point margin lt was one of the best played games of the season BELLEVILLE 47 EAST ST LOUIS 37 On Friday night February 2 our Devils again defeated their arch rivals the East Side Flyers lt was the third time this season that our boys accomplished that feat Vernon Vogt was hot as he looped 24 points into the basket At this point in the season we were in a three way tie with Collinsville and Woodriver. Alton was riding in front with a comfortable two- game lead. BELLEVI LLE 33-DUPO 26 Our boys had a score to settle with Dupo the hot stuff from the Cahokia Conference we had lost the first game with them earlier in the season 28-26. This time our boys were out for the kill . Ralph Beil, after a weak time the night before, came to life to lead our Devils with 11 points. Close on his heels was Vernon Vogt with 10 counters. Joe Olsen was our third place man with 6. This game was non-conference, but a howling crowd saw our boys perform. BELLEVI LLE 46--CATHEDRAL 24 Our Devils kept right on going as they piled through Cathedral's Crusaders for the second time of the season and to take the city cham- pionship.
