' The Administration Aids 0111? Growth Board of Education In this twentieth century in which we are living there is a conflict--not a conflict between the North, South, East, or West, but one between the flesh and the Spirit. In Galatians 5:17 we read-- For the flesh Iusteth against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh . . . To the Seniors and the future classes who are anticipating graduation we want to say that there are greater factors ln life than receiving diplomas. We must be on guard daily against the suggestions of the flesh. All of us are either denying the flesh or denying our Heavenly Father. We want to say thank you to all who have helped to make this educational program possible. Nelson Glick SEATED, Left to Right: C. Clayton Hartzler, President: Jesse Hartzler, Secretary. STANDING: David Kanagy, Treasurer: Nelscn Glick, Charles Kauffman. Sponsored by JESSE GLICK FAMILY r Mr. Laurie Mitton, Principal PRINCIP ,S MESSAGE Many students approach their graduation with mixed emotions. Graduation is both a sad and a happy time for all of us. lt ls sad because good friends part to go their separate ways--happy because twelve years of hard work are over. I would like to call to your attention the following points: 113 There is no substitute for real spirituality. Q29 There is no substitute for intellectual development, CBJ There is no substitute for work. All three are essential if you wish to be an educated person. If one is neglected your education is faulty. I trust that in the last twelve years you have all come to appreciate these three truths and that you will go forth from these halls of learning to serve Christ and His Church in true humility and sincerity. We express our graxirude to our parents, the school board, and Lhe faculty for the wonderful facilities which have helped make this growth possible. As the seniors graduate and go out into life, we wish them the best of success. May they let God lead each step of the way. ' Carolyn Hartzler and Rebecca Yoder Sponsored by HARVEY PEACHEY FAMILY As seniors we like to look back on our years of training as years of continually growing not only educationally, but spiritually and socially. We are now prepared to take our place in life to serve God and our fellowmen in a greater and fuller sense than we could have, had we not had the opportunity of attending Belle- ville Mennonite School. As the class of SS, we would like to thank each of our teachers who have labored successfully throuyi the years to bring us to a deeper understanding and appreciation of our Maker. We will be able to lead more useful and successful lives by applying the principles and knowledge we have re- ceived at Belleville Mennonite School. We were Leonard Byler, Marian Glick, Dolores Kauffman,JoanneKauffman, Verna Mc Connel, Marlin Miller, Marvin Metzler, Virginia Peachey, and Leonard Roth. Studies that year were algebra, science, English, Pennsylvania History, and Bible. Our teachers were Floyd Zook. Edgar Clemens, Zelda Yoder and Jacob Weirich. in February we accepted Judge Lehman's invitation to visit the Mifflin County Courthouse and to observe a court session. September, 1953, found eight sophomores back at Belleville Mennonite School since Verna McCormel did not join us. We cheerfully attacked our studies in learning to speak a foreign language, Spanish, in trying our skill in typing, in dissecting reptiles and insects in biology and in becoming better acquainted with Palestine through our Bible Geography. We were capably guided through this year by Alphie Zook. Floyd Zook, Zelda Yoder, and Oliver Zook. We enjoyed a trip to the Fiberglass factory at Huntingdon during its tenth anniversary celebration. All of us reported for the refreshments and souvenirs after our interesting visit. As jolly juniors we returned to school the next September to take up our studies where we had left off in the spring, Our class this year consisted of seven members, since Marlin Miller did not return to join us. We energetically studied world History, Spanish ll, English, and chemistry. Our Bible course proved tobevery interesting in tltat we studied the different mission stations of the world. Several changes were made in our staff that year. Stanley Kreider replaced Edgar Clemens, and Clare Martin taught in the history and Bible departments. After a pleasant summer vacation eight seniors entered the doors of Belleville Mennonite School, September 1955 namely Leonard Byler, Marian Glick, Dolores Kauffman, Marvin Metzler, Virginia Peachey, Leonard Roth, and a new member from Martinsburg, Virginia Stoltzus. Our courses and teachers for this year were physics taught by Floyd Zook. American History by Zelda Yoder, Problems of Democrary by Alphie Zook. English and literature by Laura Weaver and Mennonite Doctrine by Laurie Mitten. This year we had the privilege of touring the LEWISTOWN SENTINEL office. We saw the SENTINEL coming off the press. Our high school experiences were climaxed with atrip to New York City during the beginning of May. There we had the opportunity of experiencing a hurrying city as we stood on a street corner on Times' Square, the exciting experience of a ferry ride to Staten Island, the music from a great Carnegie Hall performance and the serenity and majesty of the city's great cathedrals. we also enjoyed seeing the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, George Washington Suspension Bridge and La Guardia Airport. Now that our high school career has ended we pause to bring back all those precious memories of times we have enjoyed at Belleville Mennonite School. Our desire is tl1at each coming graduate may be enriched and able to go forward in life because of having had the privilege of attending Belleville Mennonite School. - Joanne Kauffman Sponsored by J. Saturday morning at 8:00 I started for Big Valley with my brother. As we entered Lewistown we suddenly realized that we were hungry. So we watched for a small eating place where we could stop, Just before we entered Reedsville we came to a neat, sanitary looking soda fountain. The sign read, RUI'H'S SODA FOUNTAIN specializes in SUNDAES with VANILLA TOPPING This sounded like a new kind of sundae. We were debating whether or not we were going to try it, when who should step from behind the counter but Leonard Roth! I-Ii pals, he called, It's been ages since I last saw you. And it seems that long since we've seen you, too, I answered. Say, that vanilla-topped sundae you had when you were in your senior class must have had a great influence upon you. We'll each have one if you will kindly join us. As we enjoyed our sundaes and conversed together, I learned that, to my surprise, what Leonard Byler had said in school one day had come true. He said, ln about four years I'm going to Alaska. The government wants a greater population there and will pay about two thousand dollars to the person who is man enough to go there and farm. Leonard and his family had gone to Alaska and were making out really well in his farming career. I also learned that Marvin Metzler had built a shop and was getting quite a few customers who wanted him to weld machinery, fix a lawn mower, or build them a new chair. ln the midst of Belleville, 'Roth' told me, sits a neat little house where you find Virginia Peachey and her family. - That is where I found her, with two bashful children hanging to her skirts as she swept the porch. Even though I'm no old maid, as I vowed I would be, I'm still keeping in practice as a nurse in a doctor's office, Virginia said to me that afternoon while we were thinking of the Gd'od Qld Days At B.M.S. Joanne Kauffman is a wonderful housekeeper and she is a wife and a mother besides. You mean she is married and has some children? I asked. Yes, and the oldest one will start to school this year. She is going to the Belleville Mennonite School, where her mother attended high school. Oh, how things can change in ten years! What are the other girls from your class doing? Well, you can see Dolores Kauffman at the Lewistown Hospital. She is a secretary and a good one too. She makes enough money to pay a baby-sitter and still have some profit besides. Since I'm going by tl1e hospital tomorrow, I guess l'll stop and talk with her. lt's such a pleasant experience to talk with old friends. By the way, what is Marian Glick doing now ? Oh, she got married as soon as she got her R.N. Now she's making practical use of this as she raises her large family of eight boys on the farm. Wasn't there another girl in your class? Iasked. Oh, Iknowl It was Virginia Stoltzfus. Has she been using all her ambition in a hospital, too? Yes, Ginnie replied, but not around here. She and her husband are Missionaries at a hospital in Europe. The last time she wrote me she said that they have a furlough next year. Tell her in your next letter that an old friend wished her sincere success. And the satne to you. Good-bye, l'Il have to be leaving now. Come and visit us when you can and thank you very much for the information. This has been a constant source of inspiration and blessing to us. No student will soon forget the many spiritual feastings that were provided for us during these periods of meditation. Vie have greatly appreciated the many visiting speakers who have led our thoughts heavenward and have admonished us to follow the leading of God in our lives. We had short programs consisting of skits, poems, contests, readings, and songs given by students and teachers. Also the active games at these socials were heartily participated in by everyone. After the program and the other activities the refreshments were served. Looking back over this year's socials we find that they have helped us in bringing a change from a hard day of school work to an evening of fun and fellowship. They have also helped us develop socially by learning to know and get along better with each other.
