BELLEVILLE MENNONITE SCHOOL TENTH ANNIVERSARY Committee meetings were held in the summer of 1945 in the interests of starting a Christian school. Clayton Hartzler, Crist Y. Peachey and Abe Yoder were members of this committee. The fol- lowing winter school was held at Whitehall, with John B. Kanagy as teacher. Twenty-eight pupils were registeredg representing fifteen families, A three-room school building south of Belle- ville, was constructed the second year. Rhoda Peachey'was the principal of all nine grades. She also served as teacher. The enrollment increased to one hundred thirty the third year. Another year of high school was added. Lester Zook was the principal and David Kanagy became a Board member. M ln 1948 grades nine and ten were moved to the White Hall school house with AlphieZ.ook as teacher. Nelson Glick became a board member and con- ,struction on the second building was begun. One hundred fifty-three pupils entered the school doors in 1949. The following year the eleventh grade was of- fered for the first time. Malinda Kauffman began to work as the school's secretary in 1951. Our four year high school was approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education in 1952. This year there were eight teachers serving one hundred seventy-five pupils. The Mattawana pupils joined us, so Charles Kauffman was added to the school board. The constitution was revised and a finance com- mittee was organized. The largest building program which was begun in 1953 includes facilities for a gymnasium, science room, locker rooms, lavatories and two classrooms. A handbook was first published in September of 1954. The 1954 term opened with two-hundred twenty- eight pupils representing ninety-one families., A recent conservative estimate of the schoo1's value has been estimated at S100,000.
