Clayton Hartzler, Crist Y. Peachey and Abe Yoder were members of this committee. The fol- lowing winter school was held at Whitehall, with John B. Kanagy as teacher. Twenty-eight pupils were registeredg representing fifteen families, A three-room school building south of Belle- ville, was constructed the second year. Rhoda Peachey'was the principal of all nine grades. She also served as teacher. The enrollment increased to one hundred thirty the third year. Another year of high school was added. Lester Zook was the principal and David Kanagy became a Board member. M ln 1948 grades nine and ten were moved to the White Hall school house with AlphieZ.ook as teacher. Nelson Glick became a board member and con- ,struction on the second building was begun. One hundred fifty-three pupils entered the school doors in 1949. The following year the eleventh grade was of- fered for the first time. Malinda Kauffman began to work as the school's secretary in 1951. Our four year high school was approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education in 1952. This year there were eight teachers serving one hundred seventy-five pupils. The Mattawana pupils joined us, so Charles Kauffman was added to the school board. The constitution was revised and a finance com- mittee was organized. The largest building program which was begun in 1953 includes facilities for a gymnasium, science room, locker rooms, lavatories and two classrooms. A handbook was first published in September of 1954. The 1954 term opened with two-hundred twenty- eight pupils representing ninety-one families., A recent conservative estimate of the schoo1's value has been estimated at S100,000. In this yearbook our high school days are likened to a mountain' climb. As each year passes we find ourselves nearer our goal, the mountain top. In addition to helping preserve many enjoyable and valuable school day memories, the nineteen hundred and fifty-five Kish- O-Vale is presented with the desire that it may serve as a challenge to those who have just begun their mountain climbingg that they may continually press onward and upward until as seniors they have reached the goal. Zook The senior class of 1955 respectfully wishes to dedicate this edition of the Kish-O-Vale to Alphie Zook, beloved principal and teacher at the Belleville Mennonite School. Without Brother Alphie our school, could not and would not be what it is today. Through his untiring efforts and concern, guarded and guided by his capable leadership and prayers on our behalf our school has grown rapidly in the past. We, as seniors, cannot adequately express the deep appreciation and gratitude we feel for this. But we know as we step out into life that we will be prepared for service by the thorough training we have received at B.M.S. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethern to dwell together in unity ...... for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore. Psalms 133. As Christians we desire the blessing of the Lord upon our work and service. We need to continually remind ourselves that certain conditions are to be met. The Board has greatly appreciated the support given in various ways by the churches, patrons, teachers and student body. We are fully convinced that this program is of the Lord. May He give each of us a renewed vision of the possibilities and responsi- bilities of providing for our youth an education that is Christ-centered: one that will be a help in building Christian characters and preparing them for a life of service to the glory of God. It was only a formal high school train- ing which has been completed, making us realize that the training afforded us at Belleville Mennonite School has served as a means to help us find our place in life. Looking back upon our four years of high school, we can sum up our efforts in a few words, anticipation, climbing, discouragement, new strength. and finally our goal. With a solid background of Christian teaching and experience, our responsibility, as we stand upon the threshold, is to continue, Onward with Christ . Velma Stoltzfus Sponsored by JOHN D. Kauffman, Velma Stoltzfus, Esther Espigh, Ray- mond French, Roy Hartzler, Leroy Kauffman, Mar- vin Roberts, Marlin Yoder, Robert Lepley, Louis Peachey, Ralph Metzler and Aaron Yoder. Under the guidance of our teachers: Floyd Zook, Edgar Clemens and Louis Peachey we studied algebra, biology, American History, English and the Bible. We took time out from our regular classes to visit the nursery at Greenwood Furnace and the American Viscose Corporation at Lewistown. These field trips gave us a better understanding of the industries and natural resources of Pennsylvania. Two of our original class members- -Marlin Yod- er and Aaron Yoder--did not join us at the begirming of the Sophomore year. That year our class schedule included English, typing, Pennsylvania History, civics, general science and Bible. Edgar Clemens, Alphie Zook, Zelda Yoder, Floyd Zook and Jacob Weirich were our teachers. In February we accepted Judge Lehman's invitation to observe a court session at the Mifflin County court house. All of us returnedi to Belleville Mennonite School the fall of 1953 with new enthusiasm, knowing that before the year was over we would have avail- able additional recreation facilities. To the sounds of pounding hammers and workmen's voices we prepared our experiments for chemistry, our con- versations for Spanish, our panel discussions for Problems of Democracy, and our class discussions for Bible Doctrine. We enjoyed a field trip to the Fiberglass factory at Huntingdon during its tenth anniversary celebration. All of us reported for the refreshments and souvenirs which were provided by the company. At the beginning of our Senior year Jesse Peachey, a former student at B.M.S., joined our class but Marvin Roberts did not return. There were several changes in the faculty also. Edgar Clemens, our former English teacher, was replaced by Stanley Kreider, Clare Martin taught in the history and Bible departments. We energetically tackled the problems presented to us in our English, Spanish, Algebra, World History, Bible and Physics classes. Memories of aching muscles after a hard climb to the top of Stone Mountain or Jacks Mountain on school hikes, singing together the choruses and great hymns of the church during chorus practice and programs, and pet peeves and jokes of our teachers will be remembered long after we forget many of the things which we have studied these four years. Our high school experiences were climaxed with a three day trip to New York City near the and of the school term. There we had the oppor- tunity of enjoying the subtle taste of Chinese food, the excitement of a hurrying city as we stood on a street corner on Times Square, the rhythm and atmos- phere of a ferry on a evening ride to Staten Island, the music of a Carnegie Hall performance and the serenity and majesty of the city's great cathedrals. Now that our high school career has ended we pause to relive in our minds, the interesting and stimulating experiences which we have shared with each other and to express our concern that the future graduates may be enriched by the Christian fellowship which we have experienced at Belleville Mennonite School. JAMES BRENNEMAN and FAMILY 32 VITARIAN LITERARY SOCIETY Though we students learn to know themolecular theory, and the formula for the area of a triangle, and have not literary, we are bookworms. And though we be gifted with musical talent, and understand the life cycle of a worm, and have memorized the book oflohn, and are not members of literary, we are yet lacking. And though we speak Spanish fluently, hit softballs mightily, and study government continually, and take not part in literary, our personalities suffer. Literary provides us with opportunities to interpret poems, as well as storiesg lit- erary does not waste our timeg literary does not weaken our faith, is not worthless. Literary is quite helpfulg in literary we sing, listen to panel discussions, learn to speak with courage before a group, and acquire a balanced outlook. We Vitarians listen to quartets, look at slides, live our motto, and sing with meaning our theme song. Now we are students, young: but soon we shall be adults. Now we are learning many things, but we hope soon to gain more experience. And now we learn in English, Algebra, and literary, and in many othersg but we will not give up our Vitarian spirit. Mr. Kreider Sponsored by HARVEY PEACHEY FAMILY 33 SOCIAL We studi'ed hard our lessons to learn, Now in the rugged road it's time for a turn. A social we'l1 have on a grand Friday night! How about going on a long moonlight hike? Or a skating we'1l go while the stars brightly shine We are looking forward to having a nice time. It's cold, so a program we'll anticipate! A skit by the teachers or by our classmates: The teachers are busy preparing for test. So we'l1 give it to students, who do their best. Stories and readings our friends will be bringing, The halls will also resound with our singing. Let's have ice cream and pop, for I have a hunch That it's going to please the entire bunch. Talents and interests we've shared with each other Our gaining of new friends has gone a bit farther, And memories of our fellowship will remain To carry us through 1ife's sunshine and rain. Darlis Peachey Sponsored by STEPHEN KAUFFMAN FAMILY 34 u ATHLETICS The duty of the athletic committee is to take care of the sports equipment. This includes keeping it in good condition and seeing that it is placed inside the building after games. We are very grateful to the school board and patrons for making it possible to have a wide variety of sports equipment in our school. Our special thanks go to them for the gymnasium where we can play basketball, shuffleboard, ping-pong and volleyball when it is rainy or cold outside. We are provided with tournaments in shuffleboard and ping-pong in which we have an opportunity to show our skill. Playing togetherteaches us cooperation with our fellow players and refreshes our minds and bodies, making us able to study better. Elam Peachey Sponsored by LEROY HARTZLER FAMILY 35 BUS PATROLS AND BUS DRIVERS This year, for the first time, Six boys were chosen as bus patrols. There are two boys assigned to each bus, one to Sit in the front and one in the back. It is their duty to keep the children from getting into mischief and to see that everyone has a seat. We also try to help prevent accidents by help- ing them across the road. The three ushers' duty is to see that everyone gets a seat during special meetings and chorus trips. They also arrange the risers for chorus and any properties needed for Friday Morning Devotions.
