What- ever their position or location is, we hope that the memory of the Orange and the Black will al- ways be with them. O Should memories grow dim, we trust that turn- ing again to these pages, seeing past familiar faces, and records of happy days will make mem- ories bright again. May this book serve as a fond memory of our Belleville High School. The Staff. I VERNA F. DELINE For her lasting friendship and unceasing co- operation, this book is respectfully dedicated to Verna F. Deline. Class of I925. 3 BELLEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL THE ORANGE AND THE BLACK Altho' Yale has always favored The violets dark blue, And the many sons of Harvard To the crimson rose are true, We will own the lilies slender, Nor honor shall they lack, While the tiger stands defender Of the Orange and the Black. We will own the lilies slender, Nor honor shall they lack, While the tiger stands defender Of the Orange and the Black. Thru the four long years of high school, Midst the scenes we know so well, And the mystic charm to knowledge We vainly seek to spell. Or we win athletic victories On the football field or track, Still we work for dear old Belleville, And the Orange and the Black. It was only through their co-operation and loyalty that we have been able to attain the highest success and made this a marked year in the history of Belleville High School. Mere words cannot express the deep gratitude we feel toward them and how greatly privileged we are for having a group of such loyal friends for our faculty, There's Mr. Myron, our superintendent, always ready with a smile, To guide us and help us all the while. And Mr. DeLong, a friend ever true, Who is sure to cheer us when we feel blue. Then Mrs. Horn, our old stand-by, , When she is with us for success we all try. Next, Miss Deline, whom we all like just fine, For she helps to prepare us to fall in line. And Miss Gohsman, who is very tall, With her smiling good nature is a friend to us all. - Maud Simpson, '25, 7 MR. MYRON Superintendent MR. DeLONG Principal Science MRS. And these few precepts in thy memory. See thou, character--Give thy thoughts no tongue, Nor any unproportioned thought his act. Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar. The friends thou hast, and their adoption tried, Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steelg But do not dull thy palm with entertainment Of each new hatched, unfledged comrade. Beware Of entrance to a quarrelg but being in, Bear't, that the opposed may beware of thee. Give every man thine ear, but few thy voiceg Take each manls censure, but reserve thy judgmen Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy, But not expressed in fancyg rich not gaudyg For the apparel oft proclaims the man.- Neither a borrower nor a lender be, For loan oft loses both itself and friend, And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry. This above all-to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man. -Shakespeare. 10 v- amevsafmwam-w.4.w.a...,,H...Y. . ,,n, ,,..,,,..,..,.1-.N VL W ,, ..-W-urxmvamuunnuuu-,wMA...'W'w.-,mmw CLAS -1 , AW Ai 1 fi it L- J F- ' 1 af '2x ' . :. f 'lil U ELMER Sl MMONS, President Athletic Editor Football, '22, '23, '24, Baseball, '23, '24, Basketball, '23, '24, '25. There were thirty of us. During that year we lost four members: Casper Sears, Lucinda Fischer, Harold Sherman and Lee Mattice. When we came together again in 1922, there were only seventeen of our former members. Vivian Harris left School, Agnes Riggs moved to Wayne, Mamie Dupsloff, Paul Artley, Oakley Van Schoick and Lyle Schweizer left school, Robert Clayton was ill for some time, Albert lves stayed with the Freshmen. During the year, Frances Savage moved to Detroit and Marion Greedus and Bemard Graff joined us. When school started again, we missed Viola Day, who left to attend Cleary College and Harry Randall, who spent the year in Colorado for his health. Before the year was over, we lost Alice Rowell, who moved to Romulus, Donald Robson left school to work and Bernard Graff entered business in Detroit. Edward Garlick and Wellington Coykendall were additions to our class this year. This year was very successful. Our class was well represented in the Athletic Association. We encouraged season ticket campaigns and always boosted B. H. S. at games. On the girls basketball team, our class was represented by Leah Dunham, Beatrice Coleman, Maud Simpson and Nadine Wood. On the boys basketball team there were three of our boys-Elmer Simmons, Edward Barlick and Harley Helzerman. Our social affairs were also a success. We had many all High School parties and junior and Senior parties. Our J Hop was well attended and our banquet to the Seniors was enjoyed very much. ln September, 1924, we began our Senior work together. There were only fourteen members, for Linnie Hedding left to attend High School at Ypsilanti. At the beginning of the second semester, Charles Arnold joined us, making fifteen members. This year, too, has been successful. The High School as a whole has attained a marked success in Athletics as well as in other lines. We are glad that we have been able to engage in the contests for Belleville High. We are represented in basketball by four girls and three boys. In football and baseball, Wellington, Edward, Elmer, Harley and Stewart are our representatives. We have encouraged the Athletic Association, two of our members being officers of the organization. Our Lyceum Course was a success. Our motto is Deeds, not dreams, and we hope to live up to this in future life. A N. As a means to your end, You may lean on a friend, A man who has plenty of pelf , And who's a first-rater- But sooner or later-W You'Il find you must lean on yourself! There is nothing that's new That l'm telling you, But that doesn't alter the case. For down thru the ages, Through life in all stages, The Workers have led in the race! So, I say to you, Boy, If you plan to enjoy The pleasures that money can bring, You never will do it, Unless you go to itw And Work till you win it By jing , C. S. We entered kindergarten under Mrs. Atyeo. Miss Geringer, Miss Moule, Miss Miller, Mrs. jones and Mrs. Lee led us safely thru the trials of the grammar grades to the open portals of our dear old High with a class of thirty, namely: Edith Anderson, Henry Pullen, Samuel Wilson, Irene Karr, Addie Elwell, Harold Anderson, Fred johnson, Helen Wilson, Celia Graff, William Law, Dorothy Leppo, Letitia Fell, Pearl Craft, Florence Cooper, Carson Plague, Lemuel Felt, L'Near Savage, William Pogots, Genevieve Witkowski, Velma Bird, Helen Frost, Golda Harris, Fred Gilbert, Clarence Cady, Irene Sahoza, Irma Simons, Lado Bittner, Elmer Garlick, Cyril Amerman and Lawrence Rogers. At the beginning of this school year, we missed some of our classmates. Irene Karr preferred Lincoln High, Celia Graff, L'Near Savage, Dorothy Leppo, Gene- vieve Witkowski, Lado Bittner, Lemuel Felt and Irene Sahoza left school. Letitia Fell evidently prefers the Freshmen. L. Rogers, '27, In the Sophomore Class of '25, You'll find we are very much alive. There are nine girls and twelve boys, As you can tell by the noise. There is Lawrence, a lover of toys, But no more than Harold, who shares his joys. There is Helen, the shortest girl in our class, And then comes Edith, a sweet little lass. Then Henry, the brightest one in class, Can hardly beat Irma, a sweet little lass. And Velma, who is very quiet, And Golda, who is on a diet. Oh, here is Elmer, a very quiet boy, And over there is Florence, who is full of joy. Then comes Addie, a quiet lass, And after her, Heleng Pm sure she will pass. Next, William, quiet and sedate, But no less than Clarence at that rate. There is Pearl, somewhat of a puzzle, No- less than Fred, whom we threaten to muzzle Samuel is one of our quiet boys, And Carson is very fond of toys. We have left Paul and Fred, who are happy all the time, And then there is Cyril, the cause of this rhyme. C. Amerman, '27. 26 THE FRESHMEN Freshmen Song l. May we long remember, and happy be our thots, as we recall the thrill and emotion that came to our hearts when the seasoned veterans of the gridiron, who proudly bore the colors orange and black, plowed their way through their opponents' line for a touchdown! lt is to that gallant football squad of 1924 this page is dedicated. With only five lettermen back from 1923 and the balance of the squad rookies, the outlook was not a bright one. Many long hours of diligent practice and hard drill made their success possible. From the sunny days in September until they scraped the mud off in November, not one of those boys shirked a duty. Win or lose, they came from the field smiling. Co-operation, teamwork and fair play, which are the factors of true sportsmanship, was their creed. Capt. Simmons, one of the four horsemen of the back field, under whose direction the team was governed on the field, won for himself many honors. When we needed 20 yards, or were backed up against our own goal post, his ability to analyze the situation, and play the impossible, brought the ball out of dangerous territory. Ed. Garlick, the fullback hit the line. When the hole was not large enough, Ed made one. After an end run or an off tackle play, the linemen were directed to advance the chain, nor can we forget his ability to block and run interference. Carl Simmons at right halfback, one of our fastest men, many times changed the scene of battle with a sweeping end run, or whose accurate aim threw the forward passes to safe arms during the aerial attack. When he dropped back for a punt, we knew the ball was due for an excursion. Fred Guilstorf, at left halfback, who executed a Red Grange trick by carrying the ball back for a touchdown from a kick off, against Ypsilanti, was an aggressive player. He could not only carry the ball but was a very effective' man running inter- ference. The line which took the grief and grind of battle, from end to end was well balanced. They could hold, tackle and open holes. The ends were fast, always down under punts, and seldom. if ever dropped a pass. Without a good line a team has but little. No team is stronger than its substitutes. Although they did not hold a regular position, they were always in condition, eager, ready and capable to file the position when they were called. Early in the season the team lost two good men-Albert Riggs, because of serious illness. and Cyril Amerman unfortunately dislocated a knee. B. H. S. .... ...,,.. .....,. ........... 6 Wayne 6 B. H. And our girls' team was some team. Playing fifteen games it lost but two. lt scored 431 points, while its opponents were getting 204. The girls merited all the fine things said of them, as well as the admiration and the confidence that the school and its friends always expressed for them. This was a team that never slighted its practices. lts members worked hard to develop skill and team work. They knew the value of co-operationg they could lose gracefully without losing courage and spiritg they were courteous to opponents and to all officialsg they could play hard, and they could smile when the going was the roughestg they were always loyal to the school and its ideals. For their loyalty, for their spirit of co-operation, for their energy in practices and their enthusiasm and love of the game, for these qualities as well as the glory and prestige they added to the Orange and the Black, they will be remembered by their schoolmates and the lovers of Belleville High. And we are not forgetting the substitutes who mean so much for the success of every team. To play the game as they played it without having the oppor- tunity to engage in the contests when the crowds are present, and when some glory is to be achieved, speaks much for their loyalty and spirit, when they were called upon, they gave their best and contributed in no small way to the success of the team. john Myron. as Mr. Myron ,,,,,,,, Milton Smith ,.A,.,,, Edward Carlick .,.,,, Cyril Amerman ,,,,, Shirley Sobolewsky Mr. DeLong ,.,.,, BOYS' BASKETBALL TEAM ,,.....Coach ,.,..,,Forward ,,,,,,Center ....,.Center ,,.,,.Center ..r,.r.Coach jordan Fehlig ...... The Auditorium was used as our basketball hall. Practice began early in December. The season opened with a bang-Flat Rock l, Belleville 32, thus putting the boys on edge. After their opening game, the team continued their hard practicing. They first won and then lost, but finally they hit their stride. Out of the last eleven games, they received but two defeats. A remarkable record. We must not forget our second team. They played three games and won them all, showing that they were successful. jordan Fehlig was elected captain of next year's team.
