HISTORY OF THE SENIOR CLASS OF 48 Thxs history has a very modest purpose To revxew the past, to enjoy the present and prepare for the future Tlus hlstory of past events IS to be undertaken solely for the purpose of txcklmng the mental vanxty by re calling pleasant memorles to the mind of those dzgmfled Semors of 1948 Lxke our forefathers of the early seventeenth century they were dnven from the placxd shores of the Grades' to land in 1944 on the rugged but welcome Freshmen pemnsula of the Bellevxlle High School steps In th1s flrst year we see the early settlers sturdy pxoneers for the three years to come namely Development and Progress fSophomores and .Tumors and the modern perxod Senxorsj A large group of settlers set sa1l from The Grades in the Sprmg of 1944, solemnly but cheerfully slgnmg themr names to the Charter of Enroll ment The settlement was organlzed and estabhshed 1n Bellevxlle Hxgh School that fall under the leadershlp of Presxdent L. I Prophecy of the Senior Class of 48 Continued With that diamond flashing on the 3rd finger of the left hand we can see Pauline Spivey busy sweeping dusting and sewing on collar buttons We see Lela Knight a very attractive blonde in a New York office doing the work of a very efficient secretary We see B111 Madden in the place of Lester Gooch drawing the comic strip of Fearless Fosdick for the New York Herald and all daily papers Delvis Taylor will be a civil engineer He will build railroads over the earth and moon lay out airlines between the planets while he plays basket ball with the stars Doyle Bryant and his band have finally reached Broadway and guess who the star vocalist is She is no other than the great soprano Ocie Lee Rutledge ln the future years we see Anna Sue Caldwell a graduate nurse in a large hospital 1n Brooklyn Who knows she may be head of the hospital some day all the latest styles in women s wear we:wok:wo:xxx:xxvxskxarvwxavxarskvar-rwrxvx SENIOR CLASS WILL We the class of 48 of the Belleville High School County of Yell State of Arkansas United States of America having come through our four years in this dear old school having greedily and very willingly devoured all the fruits of knowledge witlun our reach in leaving do hereby bequest and bequeath the following To Mr Rhoads we leave all the gum we failed to chew and our love for sitting together To Mrs Apple we leave our excuses for being late to class and our hatred for homework To Mr Hall we leave a lesson on How not to Blush which we hope he will study regularly To Mrs Dyer the girls leave their recipe for making muffins with water and fudge when she 15 absent The boys leave her the bread remaining in the lunchroom To Mr Ryan we leave him all the love and respect that is due him and the thanks that he deserves for helping us through these last two years of hard work. High School organized n studs nt council this year to be sponsored by our Supermtc ndent Barnard D Ryan The purpose s of this organization are 1 To promote the general welfare of the students Z To co ordinate between classes clubs and other organizations 3 To co ordlnate between students and teachers Two members were elected by each class to represent their class from the nxnth through the twelfth One student to serve one year and one to serxe for a two year term The freshmen however will elect two students each year one to serve one year and the other to serve two years The fxrst meeting was called by Mr Ryan November Z4 1947 for the purpose of organizing the Student Council of Belleville High School The officers for the Student Council for 1947 48 are President Betty Yancy Vice President Bobby Moudy Secretary Treasurer Anna Caldwell Sergeant at arms Nolen Bryant Assistant Sergeant at arms Lydla Dickey The functions of the president are to preside at all meetings of the council She has the power to call meetings of the council whenever it seems necessary The Vice President shall preside at all meetings when the president is two years. A H I'-IALLOVN F FN CARNIVAL Each year the Jumor I-lxgh School and Prlmary grades have a hallowe en carmval to raxse money for much needed supp11es for thexr classrooms The students and teachers put forth a great deal of ef fort and hard work to make the carnxval a success An unusual large amount of money was ra1sed thxs year wh1ch was d1v1ded among those part1c1pat1ng 1n the carmval Our school carnmval compared very favorably w1th the s1de show of many com mercxal carnxvals The Spook house caused many a shlver and screams among those that had the nerve and courage to v1s1t lt The doll rack was well patronxzed because lt was the one opportumty for the student to knock down thexr teachers The teachers stood up pretty well under the ordeal Q For those that were lnterested 1n knowxng what the futura would hold for them lxned up to V1S1t the famous fortune teller that had been secured for thls occasmon The f1sh1ng pond penny p1tch1ng and bmgo provxded many przzes for others For those that were hungry the hamburgers and cold drlnks that they bought were fxt for a kmng For the others that part1c1pated xn the cake walk were pleased when they drew the lucky number for the many del1c1ous cakes that had been donated The I-hghhght of the Carmval was when lv r Ryan crowned Glen Buckman and Rosemary Patton k1ng and queen of the Carnnal to re1gn un txl next year vu U ' 1 . . . , - . A o ., I ' I U . . . . . , , ln . .Y . n SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS W 4 are very proud indeed of the many improvements that have been made not only in Belleville High School but in Belleville Grade School as well One of the most outstanding improvements which affects all the students is the fact that our school rating has come up from a C to a high B in the estimation of our state department This was made possible by the teachers doing additional col lege work increasing the number of library books and having a nine months term of school The much needed rest rooms for boys and girls were added to our school plant this past fall a new commercial department with new typewriters was also added In addition to the many courses that have been previously offered in our school typing foreign language and speech have been added for a better rounded high school Curriculum being used almost daily with noticeable improvement in class work on the part of the pupils Many tools and shop items for use of the Agriculture boys and the veterans program was purchased from the surplus commodities this year VX e are indeed proud of the new lunch room equipment the electric stove and refrzg erator that is in daily use in our lunch room Our grade school has made many improvements and has also made much progress this year Many easy reading books and supplementary books have been added to their library shelves Number work material such as peg boards and building blocks are a few ofthe many aids our teachers are using Growing plants curtains and bulletin boards have been added for room improvements Sand tables and benches are being used 1n the play centers of the lower grades Art work and group singing are being stressed for the first time in several years and greater interest has been developed because of these projects 1 ' - 3 9 I , . f . .
