Things got so bad that George (Jeanie’s father) called in a psychiatrist but she couldn’t help because Jeanie said that she actually saw a strange little green man in her bed- room staring at her. Finally Jeanie was saved from all these ‘vicious’ people by Dr. Heisenger, a parapsychologist who un- derstood the whole problem. According to him, the whole trouble lay in the existence of a poltergeist from a family an- cestor, whose picture hung on the living room wall. It was only after the poltergeist was returned to the picture that normalcy returned to the Pfieffer household. The play had an unusual and exciting plot, something a little different in the line of entertainment from previous senior plays. It proved successful and received many compli- ments from the audience both nights. It netted the class $450, and it marked Mrs. Smith’s ninth year of directing the Senior Play. The class owes her and the custodial staff a debt of gratitude. Compared to the present class number of 34, the starting enrollment con- sisted of 52. Through the years, some classmates have left. During the Freshman year the class earned almost S50 at its first record hop. The Sophomore record hop brought $75. For a change, as Juniors the class decided to earn money with hard labor;a car wash was the answer. The $100 was well earned except for a few streaks on Mrs. Millers car. Our casualties amounted to a few electrical jolts to vacuumers who worked without fail throughout the rain, not to mention the after effects of killer colds. As Juniors the group was given permis- sion to organize and produce two dances. The first dance netted Si25; the second SI00. The class also sold food in the cafeteria at home basketball games. During this year nearly half of the class boarded a bus at 11:30 to attend Vo- cational School. It was this factor which brought about differences during the Se- nior Year. As Seniors, the group became more mature and differences were sought to be reconciled. This year the class held three dances, each netting nearly $100 per dance. Again food was sold at five home basketball games. The biggest money making project was the Senior Play entitled “Her Adorable Imp” which netted S530. Along with all the money-making factors, eight members of the class went to Jefferson Community College enrolled as college students for English or Introduc- tory Psychology. This was a worthwhile experience which we recommend to future classes. It’s been a great year to remember with memories happening so fast. Al- though soon we’ll pack our books and leave UAB, we’ll go knowing we’ve had a great start in life. Forget-Me-Nots Class Motto: “I Think Therefore I Am.” PERSONNEL Board and Faculty G. Zehr, B. Weaver 21 Charles Theodore Carter October 23, 1958-June 23, 1973 Charles came to Belleville from his former place of residence in Sandy Creek. He was very active in school sports, including basketball, soccer and cross-country. Outside of school he was busy helping his family on the pa- per route and found time to do some snowmobiling for recreation. Charles valued his friends and his lamily greatly and was willing to help anyone, but took nothing in return. He obtained a perfect attendance rec- ord his last three years of school. Charles was known to his friends as Chuck. His warm personality and cheerful ways are greatly missed by his family and throughout the halls of Union Academy. Dedication The Senior Class of 1974 is proud to dedicate its year- book to Union Academy of Belleville in honor of 150 years of existence. The building of Union Academy was inspired by Josh- ua Bradley, who told residents of Belleville that a building re- placing the log cabin used for a school would attract more people to Belleville. The people thus set about building Union Academy. Giles Hall contributed the land, and various people of the town contributed materials and time into the construction of a building. Enrollment of the first year of Union Academy was 34 students, under Principal George W. Eaton. In 1845 the Bell Tower was contributed by the trustees of three Belleville churches: The Presbyterian Church, The Methodist Church, and The Baptist Church. An addition was built to meet the rising enrollment in 1882. The park was given by Frederick Williams. Mr. Norris Shepardson established the Endowment Fund, and a list of all the contributors to the fund are listed in the Book of Memories. On January 29, 1923, Union Academy burned; how- ever, the people were determined to start again. On Septem- ber 6, 1924, a school costing S 105,000 was erected. In 1935 the southeast wing was built. At this time, the Bell Tower was moved to its former location. In 1966, a mechanical bell was installed for the residents of Belleville. Mr. Edward Mar- telle was the principal at this time. In 1943 Woodville children were brought to Union Academy, and in 1945 Ellisburg children were also included in the consolidation. The northwest addition was built in 1954-1955 when Mr. Ernest Shaad was principal, and some renovations were made to balance the new facilities. In 1962 it was necessary to convert a house on Acad- emy Street into two classrooms. The classes which presently occupy it are kindergarten and sixth grade. Union Academy is unique in that its history is one built on pride by the people of Belleville who placed educa- tion of their children in high esteem. With this strong, in- spiring influence, surely Union Academy of Belleville will re- main for years to come. ALMA MATER- by Phila Butler Bowman Smith There’s a place we call Old Union-a spot our hearts hold dear. Though our feet in paths afar from her may roam: There’s a hand outstretched to guide us to ways of truth and right. There’s a loving voice that calls her children home. CHORUS: Then hail to thee. Old Union though we be far or near, Our hearts will cry, 'Thou art our mother yet!” Thy loving precepts ever Inspire our souls to right; We may leave thee, but we never shall forget. Here within the minds fair garden, We learned to sow the seed That shall spring to fruitage 'neath our eager eyes. Here we laid foundations lowly. Beneath thy watchful eye. For the temples that immortal shall arise. 23 School Staff H. Eastman, J. Bowman R. Remington, F. Bovee, E. Vann Absent: G. Leepy B. Stoodley, H. Brown, O. Rohde, S. Abbott, J.
