Then during the next four games the Chieftains won for themselves the unofficial title of the One Touchdown or Less team. One of those one touchdowns was the source of much discussion and argument in Wapakoneta. Although it was not the deciding factor in the title race, since Wapak was only able to tie Van Wert Cand BHS beat them soundly for the first time in ten yearslj. Had the Chieftains only tied Wapak, they would still have had an undisputed and unshared first place in the Western Buckeye League. But a clean sweep of all victories fthe first unshared title in BHS historyj was a much sweeter way to win the championship. In addition to the individual honors won by squad members in the League and in the Area, and the first unshared league title, there were some other firstsgit was the first time any BHS football team blanked ithree opponents in one season: Sidney, Lima Shaw- nee, and Coldwaterg and it was the first time a Bellefontaine Coach was named Area Coach of the Year. The statistics don't show the extra effort that some of the boys made-the effort during track season to improve quick starts, speed, and running ability, the effort during the summer by boys who ran miles every day-some for conditioning only and others to cut down weight as well, the effort it takes to keep strict training, to stick it out through the terrific heat of August practice sessions. Nor do the statistics show the team loyalty or the fact that without exception the officials of every game fhome and awayj came up afterwards to comment on the fine behavior and good sportsmanship displayed by the team. The boys of the 1959 football squad were first class representatives of their homes. school, and community, as well as first class freally roughj football players. John Hartzler, Bob Baud- At the beginning of the 1959-60 basketball season. many fans thought the B.H.S. Chieftains would be in for a long winter. The Chiefs lost four starters from last year's W.B.L. champions. and were picked to come seventh place in the league. On Friday, Feb. 26, the Chieftains completed a terrific comeback as they defeated the Graham Falcons 62-56. This win gave the Chiefs their 10th win against seven setbacks. B.H.S. had three games before league competitior. began and won only one of them, Piqua. However, the I06 Chiefs surprised Wapak, picked to win the league, as they won 54-53 in an overtime. After dropping two of the next three, the scrappy Chieftains won eight of the last nine games, losing only to Van Wert 67-66. In doing so, they tied with Coldwater, Wapak, and Van Wert for the league title with a 5-2 record. On Feb. 22, the league meeting was held in Cold- water, and Bellefontaine had three players recognized. Dave Robinson and Gary Rhea co-captains, were placed on the first and second teams respectively. Earl Hicks was given honorable mention. CHAMPS Hicks. Dave Rum:-r. DISPLAY ACTING ABILITIES On May 21, the Dramatics Club presented two one- act plays. L'11der1oz4' consisting of a cast of nine girls was a suspenseful and fast-moving drama directed by Mickey Emery. Miss Abby Blackwell, played by Ann Goslee, had taken care of her younger half-sister, Lana Fogt, after the death of their parents. Because Ann was extremely jealous of Lana, she attempted to dis- pose of her younger sister. However Lana was reg. cued by Mrs. Grant, played by Bonnie Kennedy. Other members of the cast were: Carole Underwood, Wanda Mummey, Betsy Watkins, Leann Hadley, Judy King, and Linda Kinnard. Minor ,Ufl't!t'f6.V. directed by Craig Adryan, was a story of four men stranded on a life raft. They were starved and exhausted, and when they were just about to lose all faith. it rained. This miracle renewed their faith and provided them with a new hope of survival. The four men were portrayed by Way'ne McLaughlin, Tom Barrett, Gary Potter, and John Hartzler. Twenty-nine new members were tapped into the National Thespian Society on May 26. In order to gain admission into this honorary group, you must be a Dramatics Club member and must have earned ten points. l FIRST ROVU: Gerry Kaucher, Tom Insley, John Hartzler, Leann Hadley, Margie Foreman, Lana Fogt, Sharon Coover. This year Gloria Elliott was selected as the best actress and John Pusey as the best actor. Judy Kosmatka and Conrad Lambert were elected supporting actress and actor. It is worthy to note that all four winners are seniors and won the awards for their performances in the Senior Play, The Nigbt of Jmzlmrny 16. IZ4 This human relations project is one of the District Y.W.C.A. in coopera- tion with the Anti-Defamation League. The awards consist of money left by the late Mrs. Bookwalter. Under the human relations theme, the club made an interesting visit to St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church of our own city. Harriet Tully, Janet Knotts, Ruth Irwin, and Marsha Detrick represented the club on the annual Ohio District Study Tour of the U.N. in New York City. It was unanimously agreed that the Y-Teens had an eventful year climaxed by the beautiful Easter services with Hi-Y. AND EXTEND CHRISTIAN CHARACTER' A state-wide youth and government program was the main project of Hi-Y this year. The program was made up of Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y groups over the state. Actually, it was a mock legislature in which the Hi-Y of B.H.S. participated and proposed a bill. Advising the group through a suc- cessful year was Mr. Leslie Fritzlan and the officers: Allan Jones, presi- dent: Earl Hicks, vice president: Roger Cole, secretary: Roy Leasure, treasurer, jim Huffer, chaplain, and Dave Karibo and Don Neal, sergeants-at-arms. Varied meetings throughout the year consisted of talks by Rev. Mc- Donald and Dr. Springer who spoke on hypnotism. An interesting meeting of impromptu speeches was also en- joyed. As a special project, the group adopted a needy family at Christmas. It also contributed money to the Worlcl Service Fund, which aids in Y.M.C.A. work over the world. Hi-Y participated in beautiful Eas- ter and Christmas programs and ex- perienced an eventful and successful year. PROMOTE SERVICE Key Club, the newest extracurricular ac- tivity, was organized in the spring of 1959. This service club is sponsored by the local Kiwanis Club, and Mr. C. E. Lundy, princi- pal, is the adviser. The twenty-six members are a select group from the sophomore, jun- ior, and senior classes. In order to obtain membership, the boys have to meet certain rigid requirements, and pass through a screening committee composed of Kiwanians. The first officers of the club were Fred Burton, president, Terry Ryan, vice presi- dent, john Pusey, secretary, and Allan jones, treasurer. This year, the boys worked through var- ious money-making activities to send at least one officer to the International Key Club Convention in Boston in july of this vw: Their biggest project was the publication of a student handbook which will be given to all new students. This book will contain a floor plan of the building, introduce the faculty, describe the various organizations, and list the rules and regulations of our school. VUE WANT TALENT! is the cry of our so- ciety of today. Some people feel that art has taken a great fall during the past years. Belle- fontaine High School is not to blame for con- tributing to this statement. Under the super- vision of Mrs, Shawan, an art club was started for students in grades 8-12. Art club met twice a month under the fol- lowing officers: Phyllis Sickles, presidentg Eva Tennant, vice presidentg Rita johnson, secre- taryg Linda Beltz, press agent. These art students began the year by paint- ing Halloween pictures on the windows of downtown businesses. To keep in the swing of things during the Yule tide season, they made posters depicting the Christmas story. On Saturday, May 23, an excursion to Ohio State University was enjoyed by all. Although the main goal of the trip was to further the student's knowledge of art, it also gave them a chance to see a large college. Nothing is fun unless there is some goal to strive for, or some form of competition. Art club has not forgotten this important fact so every year they have an art show. This line from the G.A.A. song holds especially true for this past year. Under the direction of Miss Georgia Waite, and the officers, Adrianne Ritchie, president, Gloria El- liott, vice president, Judy Rubin, secretary, and Sandy Haynes, treasurer, the club completed one of its most active years. Memories first fade back to the week of initiation for the incoming juniors. After the hectic week, twen- ty-four juniors went through the impressive formal initiation. At this, they were presented a red rose tied with two shades of blue ribbon, the flower and colors of the club. With a full membership of thirty-seven, including thirteen seniors, G.A.A. began its active year. Among its activities were a Mardi Gras party, a Beatnik party, the Awards Dinner, the Junior-Senior Banquet, and the Mothers Tea. They also adopted a family and a small girl at Thanksgiving and Christmas. G.A.A.'s main project is furnishing the awards for the eighth graders, winning tournament teams, and special Senior awards. This year eighteen girls received Block B's upon accumulating 500 points, and three Seniors received English B's as recognition of playing in every tournament during their high school years. Carole Underwood received the gold trophy for ac- cumulating the most points. Seven senior girls who had played in all of the tournaments during their Sen- ior year received sterling silver bracelets. The winners of the hockey, basketball, and volleyball tournaments received sterling silver miniature hockey sticks, bas- ketballs, and basketballs. 33 AIM FOR 100 0 RED CROSS GOAL fl ni FIRST RONX INancy Detvtrler secretary Nlllte Smlth presldent INancy Bexhtler yrce presrdent SECOND ROW NIarsha Wren treasurer Conme Nevyman Nancy Ewlsrlor Barbara Cramg THIRD ROW jude Barlup Sandy Henselman Mabel Packer Mary Anne Jones FOURTH ROW Bonnre Mum Karen Meredxth Judy Kosmatka janet Worchester FIFTH ROW Marrlyn Tanger jamce Wrsh Alrce Sprankell Rose Huber SIXTH ROXV joe Slater Niyra Lee Short Mickey Emery SEVENTH ROW Fred Petty Rebecca Johnson Rm ohnson Beyerly james Jane Howell STANDING NIrs Angle aduser A1m for IOOQ vsas the adylce amen to homeroom representatlyes of Red Cross A poster vyhrch vyas placed ln the mam hall was made to shovy the per centage of students who gaye to the Red Cross fund It was made 1n the form of a cross by oe Slater a member and Mxlse Smxth and Tom Lee fllled rt rn each day Doc Lautenbach s homeroom 995315 clalmed the tntle of gettxng IOOQ I34 Gu1ded by Mrs Angle the offrcers Mike Smxth presndent Nancy Belghtler yxce presxdent Nancy Det vyrler secretary Marsha Wren treasurer handled the concessxons at a home basketball game Thrs was a money making proyect for the club Durrng the course of the year They plan to use the money to make and frll a chest to send oyerseas . I46 -Q PART IN MANY SCHOOL ACTIVITIES BAND To the sound of a clear brass fanfare, Bellefontaine High School's classy marching band of 1959 presented a series of fine halftime shows for the local football fans. Many hours of hard practice resulted in many entertaining drills and other crowd pleasersf' One of the outstanding features of the season was Barb Craig's dance rendition of Rock Around the Clock, which brought her and the band several standing ovations. Performance by the marching band at the football and basketball games as well as pep meetings helped boost team and school spirit. The 1960 concert band, composed of sixty-seven members, was organized immediately following march- ing season with appropriate change in instrumentation taking place at that time. This year, the concert band enjoyed the opportunity to play not only much of the finest modern band literature, but also to become familiar with many classic works. For the first time, This year the award was presented to Gerry Kaucher. A full house was on hand to hear the annual spring cc.icert on April 8, Among the best received numbers were The Magic Trumpet, An American in Paris, and Stars and Stripes Forever. Following the con- cert, the band began preparation for its annual chil- dren's concert which is presented for students in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. Culminating a year of fun and hard work were the lfirst Annual Music Ban- quet and the band's yearly participation in the Van Wert Peony Festival. The Bellefontaine High School Band, under the capable direction of Harold Thorley, with Fred Sparks as president, Gary Yoesting, vice preSifl6Uf9 GCYFY Kaucher, secretary, and Bonnie Detwiler, treasurer, enjoyed a highly successful year. the band participated in district contest, receiving a two fexcellentj rating for its initial endeavor. JOHN PHILIP SOUSA BAND AWARD Highlighting the band concert each year is the pre- sentation to the outstanding senior band member the Sousa Award. HoMECoM1 G QUEE Applause and exclamations of pleasure arose from the rain-drenched crowd as Miss Betty Puckett, Queen of the 1959-1960 Homecoming Celebration, appeared on the float decorated in the theme of Strings of My Heart. Betty and her court toured the muddy field for inspection by her proud school and alumni before com- ing to rest encircled by the band. Here the coronation took place. john Pusey, president of the Senior Class, performed the honors of crowning the lovely queen, while Don Neal, vice president of Phy-Chem escorted Iudy Heath, freshman attendantg Roger Cole, president of Phy-Chem escorted jane Hufford, sophomore at- tendant, Terry Ryan, president of Key Club escorted Leann Hadley, junior attendantg and Allan jones, vice president of the Senior Class escorted Bonnie Detwiler, senior attendant. Our queen was attired in white satin with red acces- sories, while the attendants wore red with white acces- sories. This lovely sight brightened the dismal, rainy evening. Each year the queen is chosen by the entire student body, while the attendants are chosen by their respective classes. Following the game, Queen Betty and her court reigned as guests of honor at a dance held at the Youth Center, which was decorated in the same theme. Hearts surrounded the couples as they danced to the music of Mel Haney and his band. Though weather conditions seemed against it, the Homecoming Celebration of 1959-1960 was deemed highly successful by all. 'F' I' Her Majesty and the court following the game at the Youth Center. They are shown at the climax of the play during the re-living of the wedding ceremony of Rev, and Mrs, Edwin Porter. Papa Was a Preacher, a play concerning a min- ister and his family, was presented by the Junior class, November 20, 1959. This was a light and comical play, yet it contained some moments that made every- one shed a tear. Rev. and Mrs. Edwin Porter were planning to cele- brate their 25th wedding anniversary by renewing their wedding vows with their eldest son conducting the ceremony. Several other children, mischievous but truly dedicated, were the targets of Miss Jonas, a snoopy, prudish woman, who believed there was some bad in everyone. Annoying interruptions were caused by Miss Jonas, but she ended up at the wedding ceremony, a friend of the Porter family. The play reached its climax when the children participated in the service of the renewal of vows. Mr. Binkley, the fine director, is receiving a gift from Fred Sparks in behalf of the cast and crews. Gary Potter is teaching the Buzzard Lope to Kurt Hana-way. I52 Cast consists of twenty members? Many witnesses were brought to the stand by both the prosecut- ing attorney and the defense attorney. Ot' all the testimonies, that of Larry Regan, a notorious gangster, was probably the most important. The ending of this play was quite unusual. The jury members were chosen from the audience.
