Mr. Watkins and Mr. Eggleston, of Central School, having one of their frequent discussions over English. LAN GL? ,,'l X G The language department of B.H.S. offers four years of Latin. two years of French, four years of English, and one year of public speak- mg. The Latin students study the Gallic Wars, Cicero, Virgil, and other Latin poets. Cicero and Virgil are taught alternate years. Latin is an important subject because many modern languages are based upon it. French I is offered to any student in the ninth, tenth, or eleventh grades. For credit the two full years are required. The primary objective is to give the student a better under- standing of France and the French people. Two years of foreign language, either Latin or French, are required for admission to most colleges. In the four years of English students study literature of England and America and selec- tions from some of the great writers. Grammar and vocabulary are also included in the COLIISC. One year of public speaking is offered to the students. In this course proper speaking habits are taught, in order that a person may be able to get up in front of a group and make a speech.
