This peppy group consists of Kay Knowlton and Betty Hayes, both seniors, Patsy Born and Marilyn Smith, juniors, Dana Knowlton and Jane Traul, sophomores, Carol Emmons and Judy Kosmatka, fresh- men. They are the enthusiastic eight who lead the cheering section at every game. During the summer, they attended a cheerleading camp, and also prac- ticed very diligently on new and old cheers. They created the snappy post- ers decorating the walls and promoted the school spirit. Part of the team's success should certainly be attributed to our energetic cheerleaders. 89 Basketball Band at pep meeting. 1' Ng CD w.7 LEFT TO RIGHT: Junior Attendant, Suzanne Detrickg Senior Attendant, Sue Welsh, Queen, Kay Knowlton, Sophomore Attendant, Jane Traul, Freshman Attendant, Carlos Emmons. QUEEN KAY HOMECOMING Homecoming recalls memories of crisp autumn weather, old friends and returning graduates, and the tradition- al football game and Homecoming Dance. Memorable was the l956-57 Home- coming when the beautifully gowned Queen and her court made their initial appearance in the sleek convertibles of the royal procession. The royal party made their grand entrance on a flower laden float where our lovely Queen, Miss Kay Knowlton, was seated on a regal throne fashioned inside a gigantic gold iewel studded 'S L 'D i 4. Then came our traditional rivals from Urbana who outscored us. After further being defeated by Sidney, Lima Shawnee, and Van Wert, the determined Chieftains rallied again to defeat Celina, St. Marys, Marysville, and Kenton, making this their first winning season since 1952. As a result of the fine coaching of Mr. Auble and Mr. Kauffman, their final standing was five wins, four losses, which earned them third place in the Western Buckeye League. Selected for the All WBL Team was senior right guard, Bill John. Paul Taylor was chosen Outstanding Player of the year, John Traul, Outstand- ing Defensive Player, and Bill John, Out- standing Offensive Player. Team captains were Pat O'Connor and John Traul. Let's go, big team! This year, as last year, the Bellefontaine Chieftains entered the WBL fight with hopes held high. But this season those factors really paid off for the team because after the iubilant quintet, con- sisting of John Traul, Junior Phillips, Lynn McLaughlin, Mac Smith and Bill John, finished with the Challenging WBL teams, they made quite a perceptible record for the school. Time after time the Chieftains were faced with rugged opposing teams, but usually our team emerged victoriously. Sometimes the score was close and perhaps somewhat discouraging, but those boys in the red and white uniforms didn't let us down. Only once did they truly meet their match, and that was Wapak. The game was hard-fought, but the Chieftains had to take a loss, settling for a co-champion- ship with that team in the WBL. Never before have the B.H.S. fans shown such enthusiasm for the team and its success. ,Pon WWI sg! NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY On Thursday, April 25, eleven Seniors and seven Juniors were tapped for National Honor Society, the highest honor of their high school career. These eighteen were chosen from the upper third of their respective classes by vote of their classmates, these also in the upper third, and the members of the faculty. They were chosen on the basis of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Willingness to render service to the school and community, successfully holding school offices or positions of responsi- bility, and upholding principles of morality and ethics which demonstrate highest standards of honesty and reliability are some of the qualities that members must possess. By provisions of the National Constitution not more than fifteen per- cent of the graduating class, nor more than five percent of the Junior class may be admitted. At the impressive candlelight service the seven Senior members who were admitted in their iunior year, tapped and escorted the new mem- bers to the stage where they received certificates of honor, membership cards, and signed the Honor Society register. The President this year is Bob Silverstein, the Vice President, Jane Emmons, and the Secretary-Treasurer, Barbara Bewley. Their colors are light blue and dark blue and their flower is the pink rose. A scholastic average of C with a B in physical education, plus points earned in partici- pation in intramural sports is the requirement for membership. They have a formal and an informal initiation I06 both of which are remembered, somewhat fondly, sometimes not, by all the members. Every year the G.A.A. can be found in someone's basement making corsages at Homecoming time. This year's program included a caroling party, a chili supper, and the presentation of a hilarious minstrel. Heading G.A.A. this year were Barbara Bewley, President: Jane Augustine, Vice President, Betty Hayes, Secretary, Linda Huelsman, Treasurer, with Miss Georgia Waite as the able Sponsor. FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA Toward new horizons expresses the goal of the Future l-lomemakers of America in learning to live better lives and those of their families might be better tomorrow. Their colors of red and white are symbolic of youth which has courage and unwavering determination to succeed yet has innocence and purity and holds integrity as its highest virtue. Their emblem bears a house supported by two hands which indicate that the future of the homes, in America is in the hands of its youth. Growth is of major importance to these students of home economics, thus resulting in many worthwhile projects which encourage democracy in home and community life as well as promoting international good will. Its aim is to create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school, and community high standards ot Christian character. So that its aims might better be attained, the club sends two officers to a summer camp each year. With President Bill Stieg at the helm these young men planned money-making projects to replenish their treasury so they would be able to contribute to other worthwhile programs. A recipient this year was CARE. By con-. tributing to this organization they hope to promote international good will which will help to secure a lasting peace. To these young men who might be called upon to defend their country, this might well be the ounce of prevention that is worth more than a pound of cure. Further endeavors of the club was setting aside a definite sum of money to be applied to their scholarship fund which was established last year. FIRST ROW: J. Meyer, Treasurer: T. The play relates the escapades of two young girls, Cornelia Otis Skinner, burning with the desire to act, and Emily Kimbrough, the more practical one, who try to prove how mature and independent they are of their families by taking a trip to gay Paree together. Two boys, Dick and Leo, whom they meet on the ship help to liven their adventures. ln their hotel room, which was inhabited by bedbugs, Cornelia finally real- izes her ambition to act before the noted actor, Monsieur de la Croix, who is interested only in meeting her father, also a famous actor. The extraordinary escapades of these young girls fill the play with many, much- enioyed incidents of hilarity. FIRST ROW: J. Lawrence, K. MacGilli- vray, M. Kennedy, J. Dugan, S. Culp, S. Detrick, P. SENIOR PLAY On May 24, the Senior Class presented the play, Young April under the director- ship of Mr. Watkins. The play is a story of a young girl who has her beaux in rapid succession, almost marrying the wrong one, until the kindly intervention of her mother and father, to- gether with the girl's own growing under- standing, steers her over to the right one. The older brother, who is in love with an ideal conception of the sweetest girl in the world, discovers that she is only human after all. For a time he is completely disillusioned. Finally he realizes that he loves her anyhow, just as she is. Throughout the play, Mother and Father, now in great con- cern, discuss their youngsters' problems which prove to be quite realistic. li' E Aa. 4.-15' WF? 'JI Friends of Terry or George? They sang at several assembly programs-Thanksgiving and World Day of Prayer-besides The regular Spring Concert. This year, under the direction of Mr. Stang, more affectionately known as Prof, the Chorus presented The never-To-be-to?goTten operetta, Chon- ita. This was about a band of gay gypsies among whom was The lovely Chonita. The very effective music was based on Themes of Franz Liszt. Also The Chorus participated in a chorus competition at Piqua on March 23 and earned a rating of ll which is excellent. Another facet of Prof's work is To direct The Girls' Chorus. This energetic group of girls arrive at school in The wee hours of the morning to practice while the rest are still snoozing soundly. Their drill and marching formations at half-time cere- monies are the results of many hours of practice during and after school hours. Their activities include participation in the following civic affairs: Halloween parade when band members dress to represent many eerie charactersg welcoming the arrival of St. Nick at Christmas timep parading for the Memorial and July 4th parades. At the close of the football season the band members hang up their uniforms and occupy their places in daily music sessions, when the Concert Band begins preparations for their Annual Spring Concert.
