COLLINS THEIR WORK DOE ' The janitors are always handy to help open locks. clean up spilled ink. or do many other little odd jobs. besides their regular jobs of sweeping, washing black- boards, cleaning erasers. changing light bulbs, emptying waste-paper baskets. and tending the heating system. As we pick up our tray in the cafeteria, we are greeted by the cheerful smiles of the cooks. This faithful crew and their helpers daily cook for approximately 400 to 450 hungry. and sometimes complaining, students. Behind the door marked Clinic we find the school nurse to whom you are sent when you have a little pain. a rash, or perhaps break a limb. She also help the visiting doctors examine your eyes, your teeth, and even your feet. The school librarian, with the help of the student librarians. runs the library smoothly and efficiently. The truant officer makes his rounds each day to be sure those who aren't in school have legitimate reasons. Over all presides the school board. whose efficiency is proved by their accomplishments. FUTURE HOMEMAKER OF AMERICA The Future Homemakers of America. better known to most of us as F.H.A.. is composed of the girls of the Home Economics Department who wish to further their study of the home and learn more that will help them become better wives and mothers. Their sponsor is Miss Ryan. and their officers are: President. Jean Vance: Vice President. Betsy johnson: Secretary. Sandy Lock- wood: and Treasurer. Sherrill Fogt. This year they sent forty pair of mittens to the orphans of Korea. These were collected at Christmas time. when, instead of the 1956 CHANT 26 usual Christmas Tree. they had a mitten tree. Last summer at the State Fair they won first prize for their booth display. They have brought many such awards to our school. Each year they hold a Nlother and Daughter Party that gives the mothers a chance to see what their daughters are accomplishing. Last August the club sent three girls to F.H.A. Camp and they plan to :lo the same this year. for there the girls learned many thing- that have helps-rl them in their club work this year. A salute to these girls and the wonderful work they do. GIRL ' ATHLETIC ASSUCIATIO The Girls' Athletic Association. commonly known to all as the CAA.. stresses in their program the develop- ment of four points: the moral, ethical, physical, and social. They have a formal and an informal initiation, both of which are remembered, sometimes fondly, some- times not. by all the members. Their flower is the pink rose and their colors are double blue. A scholastic average of C with a II in Physical Education. plus points earno-tl in participation in intramural sports, is the re- quirement for membership. Their Sp0ns0l'. MIPS Wvaite. along with President Nancy Wood, Vice President Kitty Barlow. Secretary Beverly Hill. and Treasurer ,lane Poole. supervises the making and selling of the annual Home- coming corsages. Also on their agenda this year: a spa- ghetti supper. February 14g and a trip to the Y.W.C.A.. where their time is spent swimming. or like most girls. just gabbing. Their spring assemblies will long be re- membered by all the student body and the faculty, especi- ally last year's THIS IS YOUR LIFE. NIR. FREEMAN. FIRST ROW tl:-ft to rightl: K. Annetta Carter is the presidentg Sue Welsh, the vice presidentg Jane Emmons, treasurerg and Nancy Core, secretary. Incorporated into the club this year were the Camera Club and the Slip-Stick Club. The former devoted to demonstrating dark-room techniques and the latter teaches the use of the slide-rule. This year the club spon- sored a Science Assembly on March 22, at which they presented to the school library a copy of the book THE WORLD WE LIVE IN, based on a series of articles in LIFE MAGAZINE. Also based on these articles were the film strips they purchased for the Science Film Li- brary. For the Chemistry and Physics departments they purchased some excellent and helpful charts, which are appreciated by all chemistry and physics students. 1956 CHANT 28 The General Science Club, composed of students who have taken or are taking General Science. tries to give its members a better background of science for use in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, and at the same time strives to aid the members in scientific thinking. The first part of this year their study was centered around astronomy. Individual reports were made on stars, star patterns, telescopes, and telescopic cameras. After each report, the topic was then thrown open for discussion by each member. Some energetic persons made drawings of the star patterns for further study. At mid-year their study switched to the inventions since 1890. Mr. Marmon is their sponsorg Marie Elena Vicario, their presidentg Dave Johnson, their vice presidentg and Judy Sacksteder, their secretary. They worked very hard selling concessions at a game and used their money to buy four books for Mr. 5Iarmon's Science Library. GE ERAL CIE CE CL B FIRST HOW: Nl, Yirarin lPrcsidentt, M. Stemen. These students are taking Co-Op. They attend school in the morning and in the afternoon they learn by applying what they have learned in the classroom to actual situations which arise as they work at some business establishment. They also earn some of that commodity which seems to be a necessity, especially in the senior year of school. LIBR RIANS Every student who takes World History, American History, American Government, Sociology, and Economics, plus those who use dictionaries or run out of ink in Main, besides those who spend part of their time in the library, knows the friendly smile of the hard-working student librarian. These girlswreceive thorough training as librarians and at the same time are very helpful to Miss Llewellyn, the school Librarian. Their help gives her the time to study the new book lists, select new books, make them ready for circulation, and recondition the old books. These girls are fresh- men through seniors and give up their study periods for this work. FIRST ROW Kleit to rightj: C. Smith, C. Stocker, S. Puh, M. Shepherd, C. Cebby, M. Underwood fQuaestorJ, B. During their third baseball campaign, the Chieftains compiled a 5-6 record which is an improvement over last year's record. Some of the high-lights of this year's team are: A 9-0, no hit, shut out pitched by Doc Watkins in the season's first game against West Libertyg the hlghCSf, individual, batting average of .385g and the best mound record posted by Ron Brown. Ronny won three and lost one. His three best games were all three-hitters in which he lost one while winning two. The team had only five seniors: Doc Watkins, Bill Booze, Larry Jami- son, Paul Lambert, and Bill Guy. Four freshmen were featured in much of the action which may well pay off next year. 64 FRONT ROW tleft to righttz T. This. of course, means that next year's team will have an experienced starting four. The seniors were: Tom Wright and Ron Zoz. Ron, who just took up the game last year, was considered by Coach Morris as the most improved player of the year. Tim Carey and Harold Dipple were the junior me-mbersg while Ed Hawkins and Bert Luring were the sophomore and freshman members respectively. The matches played by the Chieftains this year were all quite close. The majority of them was played under adverse weather conditions.
