First, there's Duane, the President of our Class, Who's ready and willing to do his best, A college degree he has in mind, After serving his country to free mankind. Richard, one of our best players of ball, Makes many a goal with seldom a fall, He, on the farm intends to work, And he's so active, his duty he'll never shirk Peggy, our sweet and noble one, Has not a worry of her life to comeg For already she wears her wedding band, And is happily married to Richard Rowland. David, the tallest of the boys of ten, Lives a carefree life, as a boy can, After serving his country for a year or two, He hopes to get married And then there's Wayne, who is always ready and Of course Evelyn is his and start life anew. the storekeeper's son, on the rung main thought, And also the rings which are yet to be bought. Betsy Hacker, is Who can sing and our stage girl you know, perform at any kind of a show, However she has matrimony in mind, So we wish her happiness with the man she may find. fi? Pa L a :Lab pI 0I.9 QC Conf Gene McCam ack another star at ball, Has qualities fine, which will carry him farg He's in love you know with one of the cheer leaders, And his future we say is the farm, marriage and Reta Robert Morrison, student manager of the ball team, Is loved by all, for he's far from meang A fanmer and stockman he hopes to be, And live a quiet life in the country. And then there's Barbara who's always there, To do her part, yes, more than her shareg We know she'll succeed at anything, No matter what the years may bring. Billy Ziegy another basket ball star, Like the rest of us, loves to drive a carg He's apt to try anything as his life's work, For he's adventuresome, and not the kind to shirk. Gene Gibson the youngest of our crew, Is always ready in mind with something new, A college student he hopes to be, Majoring in art, as his degree. Velma our quiet and stately lass, Likes to sing too, and with plenty of classg A position she'll hold, until her mind is changed, By some lucky guy, who will give her his name. We'll not forget Donald, who loves to play ball, He's really a fine fellow and a friend to allg We see he has matrimony in his mind, And a sweeter gal than Patty is hard to find. As for myself, Glen, I've been one of the crew, For the twelve happy years at Old B. U. A and and Our community was one of the first in Putnam County to recognize this lack to respond to the building program and the improvement of teacher training a higher scholastic standard for our grade'and high school students. The first step was to plan a course of actiong to reach worthy objectives- a new modern tell-equipped consolidated high school and grade building for Jef- fernson and Mill Creek Township, vhich meant overcoming prejudices.in abandoning old bu ldirgs, partly through sentiment and partly antagonistic attitude toward raising the tax rate schedule. The consolidation of Jefferson and Mill Creek Township was the result of our civic and community minded citizensh Their fore- sight and progressiveness gave us our new Jefferson Township Consolidated High School located at Belle Union, Jefferson Township, Indiana, which at the time of its erection'was a model school building for one of its size and student body. One of the goals'set by the new school board which consisted, of W.T.Blue, president: Edgar Hurst, Secg and G,C. Parker, memberg and by the County Supt., John Vermillion, and of other State Officials was tnat the school plant should be thought of in terms of the youth and their needs. The youth of America can be assured of education only ifeethey are happy, healthy, industrious and' safe 3 their parents and all other citizens feel a pride and a responsibility toward their teachers and school officials if they are competent, cooperative and imag- inative. Their instruction carried on by the best teaching methods, their school building, grounds, supplies, and equipment are adequate and the best obtainable, 'Under county superintendent, John Vermillion, after due pfoaess of law, Hill Creek and Jefferson Township were consolidated. Trustee, A.E.,Neier and walter Uorsett relinquished their duties and turned over financial assets and reports after consolidation, 'Walter Dorsett was acting trustee for the new Consolidated Jefferson Township. ,After the election of Gilbert E. Ogles, trustee, and school board, W.T. Blue, president, Edgar Hurst, dec., and G.C. Parker, member, were ap- pointed to issue and sell bonds for the purchase of lO acres of land of John Hollingsworth for bl5O an acre, adjacent to Belle Union as the most central and accessible to all students, and for the erection of a new consolidated high school and grade building. Bonds amounting to 337,500 were issued to build the main building. The new school officials set about to issue and sell bonds for the purchase of ten acres of land adjacent to Belle Union for the new building program. The township could not be bonded for sufficient funds to ,mild both school house and a gymn- asium. Thelnaximum rate that a township could be bonded at that time ag twa- per cent. Jefferson township formed a holdin2.company in order to finance the gymnasium. The cost to be 321,000 indebtness to oe paid out after a stated num- ber of years. Four years later G.E. Ogles, trustee, paid 31,000 indebtness. N The trustee and com ittee visited many new buildings in Indiana in order to plan an efficient and adequate school building, the present school was model- ed after the new modern high school building at Mitchel, Indiana. The architect chosen to design the building to accomodate our community needs was Elmer E.Dunlap, the contract was let to Walter Heath,Gen.Contractor,of Greencastleg Vaughan 8 Son, plumbing, Sam Wade, heating and ventilating, and Robert Bly, electrical. The present building was designed to meet the needs of the curriculum and the number of students. The building was not completed until late Summer, 1925. September 1925 the new consolidated high school and grade school was open to bovs, and girls of Jefferson Twp.under the name of The Jefferson Consolidated Schools. 4 The first school faculty of ten teachers convened at eight-thirty,Sept. 1925. The teachers were as follows: Prin. Noble H. G. Vaughan, Orville Blue, Uoviebel Wright, May Neier, Walter Keller, Ruby Ferguson, Clone Sinclair, Paul Buis, Versal McCammack, and Bobby Lallace, Under the principalships of Noble H.G.Vaughan, Noble Wallace, Albert Smed- ley and Dora G. Prichard, various new departments have been expanded, the Belle Union students have achieved honors in scholastic, vocational, music, commennal, and athletic contests. A lunch program, movie machine and public accress system have added to the everyday efficiencies of the school plant. For twenty-five years, Jefferson Township school has been the center of civic and community interests. It has graduated 32h well qualified and talented students, who are now contributing their efforts to other boys and girls. we are justly proud of school and community relationships which are cons- tantly being developed in our home com unity. Our pupils are living ambassadors for building civic pride and home confidence in our educational program. The way our pupils conduct themselves in public, whether on buses, athletic contests, in theaters, in church, or on the street corners influences the public thinking. As a united people of teachers, students and com unity supporters, we are justly proud of our consolidated school, we feel it our duty as a whole to promote, to build, to improve, ure benefit of the be justly proud of Proudly as our own and to enlarge our school and community program for the fut- on-coming generation of boys and girls, so they may in turn their school and community, and speak of it as lovingly and forefathers spoke of the little red school house.
