Dear Seniors: On the night before he was killed in battle, an American army officer wrote a letter to his son in which he offered the following quotation as advice for the son's guidance in life. Cultivate the habit of persistence, which is the most important element of success, and hold steadfast to your purpose in spite of your failures. Do not expect too much at first, for achievement is not a swift race on an elevator. It is a hot, hard climb up a long steep hill. School yourself to disregard discouragement and ap- proval. Omit the ill humors of your disposition, and re- lieve your mind of the thought that you are being slighted or overlooked. Cultivate a cheerful countenance, since bat- tles may be lost by frowns, and successes won by the narrow margin of a smile. Do not interfere with others, not try to direct their lives.
