As we look back at our high school years. Footsteps Through Time .. t. f;« j ■ September Tigers Have Disappointing Season I FINISH SIXTH IN CONFERENCE The 1987 Tigers made up for their lack of experience by playing each game with a lot of effort. The pre-season goal of the team was to make the play-offs. Despite not achieving that goal, the Tigers did finish sixth in the Conference with a 2-6 record. The Tigers played their best game of the season against Montgomery, winning by a score of 22-7. Both the offense and defense played the best game of the season. The Tigers had 298 yards on offense and held the Rcdbirds to just 90 yards total offense. Belle Plaine had 1354 yards rushing offense for the season, while their opponents rushed for 1104 yards. Manager David Moldenhauer was always ready for any Tiger injury. Front row: Eric Westlund, Kirby McDonald. Competition was tough this year because all the teams were very good. Throughout the season the girls had as much spirit for the last match as they did for the first match. In Dis- tricts the Tigers faced first-round opponent Le- Center and soundly defeated them 4-1 but were defeated in the second round by a tough St. Peter team 0-5, placing them third in Districts. Seniors Shannon Morrison, Kim Bergs, and Lisa Mellgren inspired the team with their leadership and talent. Shannon Morrison re- ceived All-Conference honors; and junior, Wendy Trost, was awarded Honorable Men- tion. The underclassmen have a lot of potential and will surely put the Belle Plaine tennis team in the spotlight next fall. To Wendy Trost, tennis doesn't mean a thing without the swing. The team went on to the District 13 tournament, where they beat LeSucur in quarter finals, and defeated Jordan in semi-finals to make it to the championship match. The Tigers played LeCenter in the championship match and defeated them 16-14, 15-12, 15-8 to advance to the Region 4A tournament for the fourth consecutive season. At the Region tournament, the Tigers played Cosmos, rated number one in the state, in the first round and were defeated but played an excellent match. The team was defeated by Gaylord in the consolation match to give the Tigers an overall record of 24-2. But think that my English is better than when I just got here. I remember the first day that I met the girls in volleyball. I remember that I was afraid because I was encircled by everyone, and they were asking me questions. I didn ’t understand anything. I remember very clearly and probably will always remember that Micki O'Reilly was trying to introduce me to all of you. I also remember the second day when I was sore and I went to practice. I was talking with Kath Dunnion, and we were trying to understand each other. Well, forget the past. I just want to thank all the people who have on some occasion or another helped me to learn the English language. Each time I speak in English, I will remember all of you guys. Well, I wish I could be here next year, but my year is almost over. Probably in one month I will be back in Spain and maybe lying on the beach with my friends, but I will not forget you. And I would like to be next year in your graduation “class of ’89”, but I think I could not come for so many reasons. But, know that I wish all of you the best things in this life and have lots of fun next year in your senior year. You only have to think that you can do it and be the best. And I don’t want to forget all the friends that I have in the “class of ’88”, for them, I also wish the best things in this life. Each of the following days brought different forms of dress and many competitive games and contests. The week’s activities came to a close with a parade, pepfest, and football game, with the Tigers taking on the Le Center Wildcats. A dance, featuring Witt’s Hits, was held after the game in the Senior High gym. Foreign Exchange Honor Princesses and escorts were Kath Dunnion and Jeff Bahr and Eva Gomez and Rick Otto. Previously Superin- tendent at Aurora Hoyt Lakes in northern Minnesota, Lubovich came to the district with experience in both small (Lanesboro) and large (North St. Paul) school systems. He began his career as an elementary teacher and went on to the positions of ju- nior high counselor, elementary principal, and superintendent. When asked what his major goal was for District 716, Lubovich replied, “To provide the best possible cost- effective education for all learners because 1 believe that education is a life-long pro- cess.” His other goals included balancing the budget, getting the community more involved in the school, and strengthening the curriculum through cooperative efforts with other schools. Considering that he ought to be and feeling that he is the “num- ber one cheerleader” for the District, Mr. Lubovich can be seen at most sports’ activi- ties. He enjoys watching any kind of sport and spends his leisure time jogging, reading, and fishing. He and his wife Carol and sons Nick and Mike have found Belle Plaine to be a friendly, clean community. He is also impressed with how concerned and support- ive the community is toward quality educa- tion. Peer Helper Program CARING AND SHARING | The Peer Helper Program, now in its fourth year at BPHS and advised by Sr. High Counselor Mike Cote, is a program of pairing senior high leaders with junior high students who want a chance to talk about their problems, feelings, and rela- tionships. These leaders must be at least second-semester sophomores and have completed a 12-hour training session using a book called Caring and Sharing as a resource. Peer helpers receive no credit, grades or pay for their work. They meet with their groups of four or five junior high students every other week for one hour. During this time, the students get their problems out into the open, and the peer helpers get experience in becoming better listeners and experience in dealing with people in general. Peer helpers Margaret Siegler, who has been with the program since its inception, and Tony Hartmann were given the opportunity to appear on Channel 9’s “Young Issues” program in Feb- ruary, where they talked about the Peer Helper Program at Belle Plaine High School. They appeared on the program with two counselors from Little Falls and two other stu- dents who were also involved in a similar program at their high school. To cap off the year, all peer helpers and the trainees for the 1988-1989 school year traveled to Valley Fair in June for a day of relaxation and fun. Tiger Boys Hare Disappointing Season RECORD, 2-IS | A young and inexperienced 1987-88 Belle Plaine Boys’ Varsity basketball team struggled this year in a conference with some very tough teams. Many of the guys who saw playing time this year were underclassmen and will come back next year stronger and more prepared. All of the seniors, who helped to lead the team, will be greatly missed. The guys gave it all they had in each game and kept their chins up throughout the entire season. They ended their season with an overall record of 2-15. This year’s coach was Randy Carlson. All- Conference went to senior forward, Jeff Mor- rison. Mark Johnson, senior center, received Honorable Mention. The Tigers thank all the fans who supported them this season. Tiger Girls Basketball Struggle END SEASON 5-16 The 1987-88 Belle Plaine Varsity Girls' Basketball season started off on the right foot with a win over Arlington-Green Isle in the season opener. As the season progressed, how- ever, the Tigers came up against some excel- lent ball clubs and didn’t always come out on top. Dawn Haedike, junior center, sums up the season with, “We had a fun season, but we just couldn’t click sometimes.’’ Throughout the en- tire season, however, the Tigers did their best to keep their morale up and to give each game all they could. After a ten-game losing streak, the Tigers pulled it together to beat Morristown in the first round of the District 13A tournament. They ended the season with a loss to St. Peter, who later went on to win the district tourna- ment. The Tigers, coached by Doug Anderson, ended the season with a 5-16 record. Chemicals Aren’t Necessary | NEW CLUB GETS 40% COMMITMENT! | Belle Plaine students in grades nine through twelve had the opportunity to join a new club this year. This club, called C.A.N. (short for Chemicals Aren't Necessary), was established to provide a support gorup for students who want to be chemically free. The idea originated at a workshop attended by Physical Education and Health teachers Mrs. Donna Brinton-Hawkins and Mr. Al Houle, where they had the opportunity to become familiar with a similar program from Minnetonka called CARE. In order to become a member of C.A.N., each student had to commit himself herself in writing to remain chemically free for the school year. The club began the year with 22% of the 9-12 student population and increased its membership to approximately 40% in the middle of the year. Once the membership was established, C.A.N.’s core members decided on three major goals for the club. These goals included supporting one another to remain chemically free; informing others, namely elementary and junior high students, of the benefits of a chcmically-frec lifestyle; and providing chemically-frce activities for members. With increased interest and positive leadership. C.A.N. members hope the future will result in an even greater number of students committing themselves to a chemically-free lifestyle. The articles were again keyed in on the computer, pages pasted up on layout sheets, and then photocopied. Helen Smith, high school audio-visual aide, ran the photocopy through the scanner to cut page stencils and then ran approximately 82,200 pages through the mimeograph machine. As an incentive for meeting deadlines, the staff was promised breakfast by Advisor Carol Kruschke the morning after the first paper came out on its publication date. Finally, in February, the staff had breakfast at Hutton’s Cafe after meeting their February 12 deadline. Staff members also accompanied Kruschke to the Camelot Restaurant in Bloomington April 26 for an evening of fine dining. According to Kruschke, “This year’s staff was the best I’ve had in a long time; it was great to have a group who liked to write, had the creativity to put their articles together, could come up with fresh ideas, and cared about the content and quality of the product they were putting out.” EMS Students Receive Governor’s Award COURSE PROVIDES OPPOR TUNITY TO SER VE COMMUNITY | Posing at the Capitol are Micki O'Reilly, Instructor Tim O’Laughlin, Jeff Townsend, Superintendent Tom Lubovich, Shannon Morrison, and Senator Schmitz. EMS (Emergency Medical Ser- vices), a unique course offered to in- terested students at BPHS, trains these students in emergency medical services and provides them with an op- portunity to serve the community through becoming members of the Belle Plaine Ambulance Service. Those students who opt to become in- volved in this service are screened and voted on by the Ambulance Service. Once they have been voted in, they go through hours of training to become licensed to do all basic life support skills and certain selected advanced skills, such as insertion of a EGTA (esophageal gastric tube airway) and insertion of an EDA (esophageal ob- terator airway). These students work 12 hour on-call shifts during the day form 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at which time they wear pagers in order to an- swer calls as quickly as possible. This year’s EMS students included seniors Kerri Laabs, Shannon Morrison, Micki O'Reilly, Jeff Townsend, and Kristi Woestehoff. Those staying on with the Ambulance Service after graduation are Micki O'Reilly, Shannon Morrison, and Jeff Townsend. On May 5, 1988, the EMS students were awarded the Governor’s Youth Recognition Award, based on students getting involved through the school in the community. Morrison. Many awards, both academic and extracurricular, were given out. Superintendent Lubovich opened the program with a welcome. Unusual in this year’s program was the fact that instead of giving out only one Outstanding Senior Girl Athlete Award, two were given out due to the fact that it was impossible to choose between the two top candidates, Jean Schultz and Robyn Denny. Other noted awards presented were the Outstanding Male Drama and Speech Award given to Tony Hartmann and the Outstanding Sr. Concert Band Member Award given to Galen Krecklau. Now we keep asking “why did he have to die?” You were part of us, and then you were taken away. Now we’ll be remembering you for forever and a day. “Class of 88” (written by Margaret Siegler) To a lot of people he was an ordinary guy. But I had the pleasure to meet a kid. In math everyday we'd laugh till we cried. We knew we shouldn’t, but we always did. Now he’s gone, and there’s nothing we can do. But look back on the memories that we shared. He’d cheer you up when you were down and blue, I hope he realized how much I cared. 1 hope I meet him in another time and place. For I only knew him for a half a year.
