In the Minnesota River Conference, the team finished in fifth place with three wins and four losses. The overall record was five wins and four losses. The Tigers lost three close conference games to LeCenter, Mankato Loyola, and Jor- dan. The final game against Montgomery also ended Coach Roy Hender- son's football career at Belle Plaine after nineteen years. Under his coaching the Tigers won 101 games, lost 66. and tied three. There were four Minnesota River Conference championships in 1970, 1978, 1979, and 1980 and state play-off teams in 1977 and 1979. FOOTBALL TEAM: FRONT: Phil Hennen. Mike Jeffries. Dave O'Brien. Seniors Lead Team To Second Place The 1983 tennis team ended their season with a record of eleven wins and four losses. Eight seniors provided considerable leadership and will indeed be missed. The girls earned second place at districts and were defeated by St. Paul Visitation in the semi- finals of the regions. Sharon Meger placed second at districts and fourth at regions. The underclassmen have a lot of potential and will put the Belle Plaine tennis team in the spotlight next fall. On behalf of the tennis team, we would like to ex- press our thanks to Coach Terry Knop for all the time and leadership he has given us to make our tennis season a smashing success! Our runners had a rebuilding year in 1983. With only four girls and six boys, the young team did not finish very high in any of the meets. Each individual showed marked im- provement in their times from the start of the year to the district meet. Running the three mile dis- tance, Paul Boschee was the top runner and Pam Legg was the quickest in the girls two mile. 24 Joanne strives to pass her Gaylord competition Girls Have Best Season Ever, 14-7 The 1983 volleyball team was very successful this year. In August, with thermometer readings of 100 degrees, the girls started five hours of prac- tice daily. The new coach, Donna Brinton, put the girls through new drills like boards and platers. With a new rig and floor layout, the girls' first opponent was Henderson. It was a tough, close match but the girls didn’t let the defeat get them down. They came back and fought hard to finish the season with the best record ever, 14-7. Highlights of the season were placing third in the conference and being district consolation cham- pions. Even though they had no spectators for support at the championship match of the Water- ville Invitational Tournament, the Tigers rallied and came out victorious over M.S.D. In quarter finals of districts, the girls came from behind 2-14 in the final game to defeat Cleveland 20-18. The season closed with a team dinner at Coach Brin- ton’s home. The team enjoyed facials and deco- rating the coach's house and yard. Expect the Tigers to be back for more drills, a conference title, and more team fun in 1984. Spirit Returns The class of 84 got spirits go- ing. It was their Homecoming and they wanted the “best . Monday night was coronation. Jerry Miller, the guest speaker, talked about Belle Plaine Homecomings over the past thirty years. Joe Dvorak, ac- companied by Jerrad Fenske, sang two solos. Bob Fogarty and Carol Hennen, last year’s royalty, ended the suspense of the evening by crowning Todd Kahle and Sarah Riesgraf the royalty for 1983. Monday evening's coronation was just the beginning of the activities. School enthusiasm has never been higher. There was fierce competition be- tween the classes and faculty. The senior girls “puffed the junior girls right off the field. Everyone wanted to be the best dressed, biggest nerd, “smelliest sweats, coolest hats and shades, and everyone wanted to proclaim their spirit by wearing red and white and decorating the school in sup- port of their Tigers. Friday there was the parade and pepfest. On the field, the Tigers defeated the Norwood Indians 33-14. The game was followed by Belle Plaine's first “air jam. The musical centers around the Idyll of Sarah Brown story, but is enriched by a horde of typical Broadway characters. All of them are gam- blers and the action concerns them, their girls, and their troubles. The chief trouble of these men is the difficulty in deciding between the rolling of the dice and the beating of the heart. Two equally wacky love stories move around this theme. One love story involved Nathan Detroit, a small but hot-shot operator and proprietor of The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York . Detroit is definitely, if irregularly, devoted to Miss Adelaide, a night club canary. They have been engaged for fourteen years, but their nuptials have been continually postponed because of Nathan’s sudden need to dash off to a crap game or the races. The other romance concerns Sky Masterson, a big- time. free-loving, free-living, good-looking guy, and Sarah Brown, a beautiful Salvation Army lass, head of the gallant but run-down Save-A-Soul-Mission. Sky and Sarah try to resist with all their will, but start showing pangs from falling in love with each other. Steph, Jeff. The girls went undefeated for their first ten games until they met a very tough Henderson team. In the first half, Belle Plaine dominated but Henderson came on strong and defeated our Tigers 56- 43. At the Waterville Tourney, the girls prevailed over Cleveland and LeCenter to bring home the trophy. The only overtime of the season was a one point loss to LeSueur. At districts, the Tigers beat Montgomery and Cleveland before falling to LeSueur 36-45. We can all be proud of our conference champs and District 13 runners-up. Individual champions at the B.P. tourney were Pat O'Brien, Tim Siegle, and Ed Fogarty. At the Morris- town Tournament, Ed Fogarty was champ again. At Norwood-Young America, Ed Fogarty and Carl Hen- nen came out on top. At the District 13 Tournament at Belle Plaine, we qualified six wrestlers. They were Jim Buesgens, Mark Klehr, Andy Fogarty, Ed Fo- garty, Carl Hennen, and Tim Traxler. Ed and Andy both qualified at Region 4 and headed for state. The state tournament was held at the St. Paul Civic Center. Two hundred fans went to cheer on the Fogarty's. Andy, at 126, lost his first match and did not get to wrestle back. Ed, at 132 pounds, won his first two matches, getting to the semi-finals before losing the next two for an even 2-2 record at state. The Tigers, who lacked height and de- pended on the fast break and outside shooting for their success, finished the season with eight wins and thirteen losses. The biggest highlights of the season were a 60-57 upset victory over the conference champions from Arlington and the impressive 77-43 victory over Wa- terville in the district tournament. The Tigers were then beaten in the tournament by district champion Montgomery 66-52. With nine seniors on the team this year, 1984-85 will be a rebuilding year but our Tigers would like to bring home a championship. sn Hot Dog goes for two! This year the senior high student council helped alleviate the boredom by sponsoring Snow Fest on February 6 - 10. The weather was typical Minnesota, subzero temperatures and lots of snow. The week long series of events began with hat and scarf day and the tug- of-war. Tuesday was super hero day and football in the snow. A pudding eating contest and cake deco- rating highlighted Wednesday. On Thursday Mr. Sauter hosted “Family Feud and handed out lots of Hershey kisses. It was also Gumby day if you knew who or what a Gumby was! The traditional Almost Anything Goes” kept everyone fired up on Friday. Students carried books on their heads, “slammed cans of Coke, and rode tricycles. Saturday night six bands participated in an air jam. The seniors proved they were the greatest by scoring a total of fifty-three points followed by the juniors with thirty-six. The sophomores gave it their best but only scored twenty-six points. They participated in several contests and games, among them were trivia contest, candy-in-jar-guess, game show, mystery contest, and ob- stacle course. It took until June 12 to complete it but we are proud of the final product. Thank you to our advisor, Bev Wen- isch. and to all the students that made this book possible. We hope this 1984 Tigerian brought back memories of old friends, faculty, trophy winning activities, the world happen- ings, crazes, and big evenings like prom and Homecoming. This book should capture the moments that were so important to us all. 66 In October the students crowded the concession stand to pick up their 1983 yearbooks. JOURNALISM STAFF: FRONT: Amy Townsend. The first being the return of Carol Kruschke to the journalism room after a leave of six years. The layouts were also changed. Every page in all eight issues were completely filled. Advertising was more im- portant too. Belle Plaine business people had the option of three different sized dis- play ads or the staff wrote ‘ jingle'' ads around a theme word such as flowers or movie titles. The journalism staff consisted of fourteen students first semester and only eight during second semester. That some- times meant a page a person but the paper never changed its style from earlier issues. Four staff members stayed in journalism both semesters. They were Vicki Hoelz, Gina Burmeister, Amy Townsend, and Sara Mor- iarty. As a bonus, they joined Mrs. Kruschke, Kathie Hoelz, and Sue Townsend at the Samurai Steak House Restaurant in Hopkins for a table prepared Japanese dinner. It was an interesting and educational evening. Four Teams Go To State 1983-84 brought many new activities and achievements for our F.F.A. chapter. This year our chapter was selected the most im- proved chapter in District 13. We also held our first parent member banquet since 1977. Bryan Koepp. Todd Kahle. and Dan Ruehling were selected as state degree win- ners. Dan Ruehling won the regional profi- ciency award. Our chapter was recognized by the state association for work in safety and chapter activities. We were also recog- nized for our work in safety by the Minneso- ta Safety Council. Our chapter competed in eleven district contests and placed well in all. with four teams advancing to the state contests. This year’s accomplishments leave the officers and chapter with new chal- lenges and goals for future years. These members were seated at the head table at the banquet FFA: FRONT: Mr. Larsen. To keep spirits soaring, the band played at five football games as well as marching in the Homecoming parade. In winter, the band continued playing at pepfests as well as at sixteen basketball games and wrestling matches. In December there was the traditional Christmas concert. The winter concert followed in March. There was a solo and ensemble recital in Belle Plaine and a contest at Gustavus. Fourteen of fifteen received superior ratings. The band also trav- eled to the District 13 band festival at Jordan. Then there was the traditional spring concert. This year will be an everlasting memory and my life at school will be one part of it. I really enjoyed participating in your extra curricular activities. I went out for cross country and basket- ball. played in the pit orchestra for the musical, joined the speech team, and mastered my driver's education. During the day I had a pretty busy sched- ule too. Starting the day with band, I took advanced math, physics, social 12, English 11. typing (first semester), and an SDR project on microscopes (second semester). Although it was a little hard to adjust to your school system at the beginning of the year, I kept working and things got better. It will be a difficult change leaving all my new friends behind and going back to my home town Fallerleben, a suburb of Wolfsburg in West Germany. But knowing that my parents, my two sister, Annette (16) and Birgit (13), and all of my old friends are waiting for me makes things a lot easier. Under Mrs. Bruder's guidance, they sponsored a Halloween costume contest, had a total of five dances, babysat at confer- ences. helped distribute cheese at the Civic Center, sponsored the Great Cats lyceum. and Spring Fling Days. At Christmas, they had a movie, a three hundred dollar toy fund, food shelf contributions, a dance, decorated class- room doors, and gave flowers to the junior high staff. The year ended with a spring picnic and some wild softball. The junior high student council did an excellent job and will be planning lots more activities in the future. The group was very young as there were only two seniors and four juniors. The first meet of the season on March 19 was the Conference Indoor Meet at M.S.U. The meet was won by Norwood- Young America with B.P. being a close second. The next meet was a triangular on April 10 at Arlington which the girls won. Then they entered the Norwood Indian Relays in which they placed fourth. On April 24, they went to a large meet at LeCenter which was won by Janesville and we were second. The girls won the Delano Relays on April 26 and a dual with Shat- tuck on May 4. Before bad weather and injuries forced them into a two week slump which carried over into the conference meet, which Norwood won, we placed sixth. However the girls rallied and tied for third in the district a few days later. Laurie Wolpern was our All-Conference selection. She won the conference high jump in spite of having a sprained ankle and not being able to compete in other events. Laurie placed second in Region 4 and advanced to the state track meet. Speech participants gave up seven Saturdays to compete at various meets at Shakopee, Richfield, M.S.U., St. Peter. Mankato East, and Arlington. The district meet was at Jordan and regions at St. Anth- ony. Besides the two team trophies, many individual trophies and ribbons were earned by our excellent speakers. Their goal was the District 13A champion- ship and we are happy to say they achieved their goal. Next year the region title will be ours!
