The junior high student council sponsored a three day winter week on March 3,4, and 5. Activities included a candy guessing contest, suitcase relay, a faculty baby photo contest, western day, and backwards day. The week concluded with the girls asking the boys to a dance. Seventh grader Julie Halquist won the can- dy contest by guessing 625 in a jar filled with 626 pieces of assorted candy. The eighth graders showed their speed when they won the suitcase relay. Large numbers of junior high students also tried out for the musical. Sheral Kahle was selected as Oli- ver and many of her fellow classmates also received roles in the production. All of these activities plus the never ending daily homework kept everyone busy. 18 «11 SEVNTH GRADE: FRONT: Paul Diers, Mike Gaffney, Andy Barlage, Jay Bartholomew, Joanne Boschee, Desi Carlson, Geri Devine, Tammy Fahey MIDDLE: Jeff Bruder, Dan Buesgens, Jim Buesgens, Brian Clymer, Pat Clymer, Joanne Adelmann BACK: Andy Fogarty, Matt Fogarty, Dale Chard, Jay Denny, Jeff Fahey, Berta Davis, Jodi Bessel. 19 SEVENTH GRADE: FRONT: Sara Meger, Peggy Hennen, Sheral Kahle, Shari Mueller, Paul Miller, Shelly Meger, Jeff Liebhard, Paul Murphy. They are the hot shots of the building and think they should win ev- ery event during Winter Week. Do you remember building up enough courage to ask that guy to the Sadie Hawkins dance? They opened up the season with shut out victories over St. Michael-Albertville and Faribault BA. In the conference opener, the Tigers won a thriller against Jordan as Gary Witt kicked a field goal in overtime. This sent the Tigers traveling to Montgomery undefeated but their offense was stopped cold, leaving them with their first defeat. The Tigers made up for their loss by making Homecoming a big success by defeating the Le Center Wildcats. They continued in their winning ways by putting together four quarters of well played football to shut out Arlington. Norwood-YA came to town next with high hopes but were sent home with a defeat. After being rated in the top of class B polls for three weeks, the Tigers failed to play up to their ability and lost to Mankato. The Tigers came back on Parent's Night by literally walking over Le Sueur, keeping the Tom Flynn plaque at Belle Plaine for the fifth straight year. The Tigers placed second in the Minne- sota River Conference with five wins and two losses. FOOTBALL TEAM:FRONT-. Jeff Kroells. Darrel Schultz. Brain Larson. Joe Hartmann. Wayne Koepp, Todd Anderson. The highlight of the regular season came against Mankato Loyola in an exciting match which the Tigers won 2 to 1. The Tigers also brought home the third place trophy from the Waterville Tournament by defeating New Rich- land. In district competition, the Ti- gers defeated Waterville in the first round but lost to Le Center in the sec- ond round to finish the season. The netters then had to face a tough Le Center team. In a very exciting match the Tigers were defeated 3-2 and came home with second place. In district individual competition there were two second place finishers. In doubles play JoAnn Fogarty and Rochelle Fogarty overwhelmed their first two opponents. In the championship match, Sharon Meger was awesome in her first two matches but lost in the finals. In region competi- tion the Tigers beat St. Anthony 3-2 to reach the quarter finals. Six Belle Plaine A-squad wrestlers, Mark Klehr, Joe Hart- mann, Bob Fogarty, Ed Fogarty, James O'Brien, and Skip Swenson traveled to Inver Grove Heights to take part in region wrestling competi- tion with the hopes of advancing to state. All six wrestlers had challenging matches but could not pull through with a Tiger win. Co-captains Joe Hartmann and James O'Brien led the team to an overall record of 8-7. Smi-Lee's Girls Prove To Be Awesome The 1981-82 girls basketball team started out the season with intentions of going far. They opened against Water- ville with a win and were not to be beaten until their fourth game against Mankato Loyola. This was the first time ever that girls basketball started out the year with three wins. The cagers went on winning seven out of the remaining thirteen games. The Tigers placed fourth in the conference and were seeded fourth in the conference and were seeded fourth in district competition. Entering districts with a 10-8 record, the girls faced the fifth seeded team, Waterville- Elysian, in the quarter finals. The Tigers started out slow but pulled it together in the end, beating the Bucs 39-32. The cagers then had to play the number one seeded Le Sueur Giants in the semi-finals. This would be the third time they would attempt to defeat the Giants. Knowing what had to be done, the Tigers went out and earned a position in the district championship by the score of 54-43. Then the Tigers met Faribault MSD at the finals only to be defeated by the score of 38-36. This was the first time the girls basketball team has ever gone to the district finals. A hustling, aggres- sive style of play typified the team. After winning just tnree of their first nine games, the Tigers started improving dur- ing the second half of the season. They won seven of their last twelve games to finish the season with a record of ten wins and eleven losses. Two of those wins were especially sat- isfying to the Tigers. The first one was a 57-51 Parent's Night victory over LeSueur in the Tiger's final home game of the season. The other was a 57-49 victory over Jordan in the quarterfinals of the district tournament. Belle Plaine was then eliminated in the semi-finals by Montgomery, a team which eventually qualified for the state tournament. Senior for- ward Gary Witt was named to the All-Confer- ence sauad. Uncontrollable weather caused many games to be postponed and some were even cancelled. With a lot of teamwork, the girls won the next three and lost the fourth in a double- header against Loyola. The team lost four more before a 13-1 victory over LeCenter followed by a 17-15 win over the Giants. In district competition, the Tigers beat Le Center 8-5 to play Jordan, the 1981 champions. Going into the eighth inning, the score was tied 3-3. In the ninth inning, Jordan scored and took the game 4-3. The girls played their best and they will be back to prove themselves next year. Tigers Take Runner Up In District Play Our young baseball team had a very surprising season as they placed second in District 13 Tourna- ment play. With four seniors on the squad, the Tigers will be an experienced and veteran club next year. Leading the offensive punch for the team was James O'Brien with a .392 batting average followed by Jeff Miller who hit .389. Bryan Koepp was the RBI leader for the team with sixteen. The pitching staff was also led by Bryan with a record of 5-4 and an earned run average of 2.38. The highlight of the season was the upset victory over number one seed- ed Montgomery in the semifinal round of the dis- trict play. Also the 11-3 win over Jordan in the first round of districts encouraged the squad. In all, the Tigers posted an impressive seven wins of the last ten games in the 1982 season. However, the biggest disappointment was to be saved for the last game - District Finals against LeSueur which Belle Plaine lost by the score of 1-0. The Tigers trap their Loyola opponent. FACULTY Leadership In District 716 The administration and school board of District 716 faced the same challenges as other schools throughout the state during the 1981-82 school year. Rising costs, inflation, declining enrollments, and state budget cuts to education made the administration's job increasing- ly difficult. 1981-82 was also a contract negotiation year. After many meetings, a settlement was reached on November 2, 1981. In both buildings, there was a change of principals. Rich Clymer replaced Neil Keohane who went into private business. Mr. Clymer had been the principal at the junior high for the past six years. Lowell Hoffman was hired to replace Mr. Clymer at the junior high. Both men worked hard developing better discipline, a computer center, registration booklets, and many more programs for the improvement of District 716. SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS-DR. The class of 1982 elected to hold coronation on Monday evening so the new king and queen could reign over the entire week of activities. Retiring queen Lisa Fogarty had the honor of naming James O'Brien and Roxanne Schmidt the royalty for 1981. Folowing corona- tion, a pepfest and snake dance were held up- town. James and Roxanne reigned over a week of activities which included slob day, punk rock day, bandana and doughnut day, hat and t-shirt day, and the traditional red and white day. Classes were dismissed on Friday afternoon so everyone could participate in the parade and pep- fest. The fired up Tigers defeated the Le Center Wildcats by a score of 20-13. The memorable week concluded by dancing to the music pro- vided by Mercury. Belle Plaine's royalty for 1981 Queen Roxanne Schmidt and King James O'Brien. However this year we had a little too much of the white stuff. The week was filled with activities such as occupation day, grub day, donut and bandana day, backward and inside out day, and Christmas day. Mike Liebhard found the spirit stick which entitled him to a free yearbook and Kerry Koepp guessed all the legs for the legs contest which gave the seniors ten more points. Snowfest '81 was a week with a lot of school participation and excitement. Yearbooks Capture Memories Have you ever noticed how many times you have opened your yearbooks just to remem- ber a name, to see a face, or maybe to read once again those special words your friends had written. Yearbooks are memories all put together with both the momentous events such as the death of a friend as well as the fun events such as Snowfest. So here is to you - the class of 1982. Louie Dunbar, as commander of the Ta- tem Perch', and Queen Myra, leader of the 'Tatem Water- way Louse Drowners' led their followers into battle in a quest to see who would rule Tatem. Each person looked at this year a little bit differently. For some it was turning eighteen, for others it was a time of decisions, but for most of us it was a time of closeness. In this closeness we shared change, tears, laughter, and good times. Our senior year was a time to discover ourselves, new goals, and ideas. Now it is time to say good-bye. Each of us must meet the future. So now we will part but we will always remember the closeness we shared.
