The Tigers' victory over the Arlington Indians was the climax of a week of spirited events. Prior to the game, the week consisted of t-shirt day, a bit of soul man with Blues Brothers day, doughnut day, a mini version of How The West Was Won with cowboys and Indians day, the traditional Thursday evening coronation, and to tie it all together, bandana and red and white day on Friday. Homecoming also included the traditional parade, pep fest uptown, and dance. Queen Lisa Fogarty and King Doug Henderson were the stu- dents' choice for 1980. Karen Manthe escorted by Mike Weldon Ann Devine escorted by Don Schultz Kelly Behnke and Dominique Claeys Junior Royalty RIGHT: Senior high English teacher Deb O'Malley was the guest speaker for the evening BELOW: Love The World Away was sung by Sandy Carlson and Dave Carlson MIDDLE RIGHT: Steve Hallgren, Annette Schmit, and Dave Ernst were the emcees for the October 9 coronation. Joe Buesgens kicked a 27 yard field goal to make the conference opener a thrilling 16-13 overtime victory over the Le Sueur Giants. This victory gave the Tigers the honor of keeping the Pop Flynn plaque for the fourth straight year. Numerous penalities during the Jordan game held the Tigers to a 22-15 defeat. A hard fought battle against Montgomery found the Tigers coming out on top again Followed by victories over Le Center, Arlington, Norwood, and Mankato Loyola. The ability to win the close game was obviously the reason the Belle Plaine Tiger football team won five of their seven conference games within a touchdown. The seven wins and two losses made the Tigers the conference champs for the third straight year and co-champions along with Jordan in the Minnesota River Conference. Based on their leadership and ability, Tony James, Paul Fo- garty, Joe Buesgens, and Jerome Bahr were voted to the All-Conference team. Doug Henderson and Jerry Keup were named Honorable Mention. Under Coach Clymer and Captain Mike Fogarty, the boys' cross country team placed third in the Conference, second at Districts, and fourth in Region 4. The girls' cross country team also had a very suc- cessful season. Captain Lorie Nelson helped lead her team to first place finishes at the Richfield Holy Angels and Norwood Invitationals. The girls finished second in both the Conference and Dis- trict. A fourth place finish at the Region meet did not qualify the Tigers to advance to state compe- tition. Freshmen Jody Schmitz and Sue Buszmann were named All-Conference along with junior Brian Fogarty. Jody and Brian also brought home All- District honors. Four members of the boys' team were lost to graduation. The girls' team was young and will be experienced next year. Chances are good for state competition in 1981. First Trophy In Volleyball History The 1980 volleyball team won the Water- ville Invitational to win their first trophy ever. To earn the trophy, the Tigers de- feated Dodge Center, Waldorf-Pember- ton, and then Bethlehem Academy in the final. Conference play proved to be rugged for the Tigers as they finished sixth with a 4- 10 record. Belle Plaine tended through- out the season to play at the level of their competition and as a result lost some matches they should have won. District action found the Tigers easily defeating St. Mary's in a 2-0 match and then losing to Jordan 0-2. All conference selection for Belle Plaine went to senior Linda Sellnow, the team's best hitter. Junior setter Janel Koepp was honorable mention. Leading scorer for Belle Plaine was sophomore Mary Leon- ard with 158 points, while senior captain Suzanne Hennen led the team with total plus statistics. They finished with nine wins and seven losses. Six seniors dominated the varsity squad. All members showed poise and confidence during some very close matches. In the District 13 playoffs, the team advanced as far as the championship round before being defeated by Le Center 2-3. The Region 4A Tournament was more encouraging when the team beat St. Mary's Academy 4-1. Advancing on, the team played the most exciting match of the season by beating Le Center 3-2. The girls were finally eliminated by St. Paul Academy, the even- tual state champions. Next year's team will be hard pressed to top the fine season that this year's hard working team had but will accept the chal- lenge. Look out Districts here we come! The superintendent, the school board, and the principals have demanding positions. It is their responsibility to see that the students of Belle Plaine get a well rounded education. Curriculum planning, scheduling, budgets, discipline, salaries, and meetings keep the administrators busy year round. Belle Plaine is fortunate to have a very experienced group of people leading us. Superin- tendent Bartholow has served the district for fourteen years. Neil Keohane has been the senior high principal for eleven years, although this is his last year in education. The junior high building has been run by Rich Clymer for six years. That makes thirty-one total years serving School Dis- trict 716. The Model United Nations Program at BPHS had its ori- gin this year. Two students from the sophomore, junior, and senior classes were se- lected to represent a New Zealand delegation at the Platteville, Wisconsin U.N. meeting in April. Over 70 high schools participated in this educational program. Oystein Elgheim was a Rotary foreign exchange student at BPHS. He hoped to develop himself personally in the one year away from home, as well as improve relations between the younger generations of Norway and America. During his stay, Stein (as he was called) participated in band and stage band since he excels in the music area. He starred at the Regional-State contest with a saxaphone solo. Upon returning to his homeland, Stein plans to finish high school and then spend eighteen months in the Navy, where he hopes to become an officer. At the completion of his Navy career he wishes to pursue an occupation working with the public. Someday he would like to return to the United States. No Snowflakes Fall For Snowfest Snowfest 1980 had everything except snow! Tradi- tional events were tug of war, Donut Day, and Red and Green Day. A pudding eating contest, Hat and Shades Day, tricycle races, outdoor volleyball, and Family Feud were new additions this year. Richard Dawson, alias Mr. Sauter, hosted our version of the Feud. The juniors took first place in every event but the tricycle races. Janel Koepp found the spirit stick and received a free yearbook as a prize. Kathy Hen- nen had the most creative ornament. Snowfest was still successful after four years. Their first formal public performance was for homecoming. They marched in the Halloween parade, providing music for the costumed children of the community. Christmas spirit was shared with families and friends of the musicians at the winter concert. The band was Irish for a day while marching in the St. Patrick's Day parade. Nine stars were awarded to the eleven participating groups at the solo and ensemble district contest. After advancing to regional-state competition, all of these musicial groups received star ratings. At large group contest the concert band received two out of three stars. The last perfor- mance which all the seniors took part in was the spring concert. The year truly ended on the right note. Someone is always in need of a photographer! Mrs. Wenisch needs hundreds of pictures for the yearbook. The journalism class has deadlines to meet. The Herald wants to keep the community informed on school activi- ties and events. The display cases need photos of current athletic events and All-Conference selections. The lists of requests never stop coming into room 117. b2 SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHERS: FRONT: Chris Siegler, Connie Mueller, Mike Buesgens, Dan Lehman, lean Effert BACK: Kent Heitkamp, Hal Kruschke, Troy Fogarty, Eric Swenson, Curt Galles. Makes Teacher Aides The Student Action for Education group once again was most active in the role of teacher aides. Each semester students were assigned to faculty members to aid with in- dividual classroom needs. A stu- dent could earn one credit for be- ing an aide, but many volunteered their service both semesters for no credit. Lyceum programs on birds of prey, mimes, and a variety show featuring a juggler provided a break from classes. As a treat, the council showed the movie Escape To Witch Mountain before Christ- mas vacation. The council sponsored three dances. One was a Sadie Haw- kin's Dance which gave the girls a chance to choose a dancing partner. To earn money to sponsor these ac- tivities the council worked in con- cession stands throughout the year. Activities to promote school spirit included hat sales and Snowfest. Even though Snowfest turned out to be another Mudfest, fun was had by all, especially for the juniors who took first place. The year ended with the Sadie Haw- kin's dance and the favorite job of calendar sales. As a gift to the school district, the council purchased a color video for the sen- ior high building. Mini Courses '81 66 67 Girls Post Best Record Ever The 1980-81 girls basketball team had the most successful season since its beginning in 1975. Play- ing a tough schedule the girls compiled a 10-8 regular season record. The highlight of the season was a parent's night victory over Montgomery. This was especially satisfying since the girls have had difficulty over the years winning on parent's night. In district competition the Tigers defeated the Minnesota School for Deaf 59-42. The girls were then eliminated by the eventual district champion, Le Sueur 49-40. The Tigers placed fourth after losing to Bethlehem Academy by a score of 37-49. They successfully defended their district title by winning it for the second consecutive year. The regular season was filled with heartbreaking losses, every loss was by two runs or less. However, the highlight of the year was a dramatic come from behind victory against Montgomery in the semi-fin- als of district play. The Tigers then captured the title the next day downing Le Sueur by a score of 5-3. In region play they won their first game for another dramatic come from behind victory. The season then ended in the Region IV Championship game with a 3-1 loss to Norwood. Leading players on this years team were the four starting seniors, Paul Fogarty, Jerry Keup, Tony James, and Gene O'Brien. Jerry and Tony were named All-Conference and Paul received honorable mention. Jerry was the leading pitcher for the Tigers with a record of 7-2, followed by sophomore Bryan Koepp at 4-2. Memories As A Senior Your senior year will go fast, it will all be over before you know it. We have heard this said many times dur- ing our last year at BPHS. Most of us will have to agree that the time passed quickly, leaving us now, with memories of the chilly football games, friendships made, the dances, classes skipped, detentions served, long hours of studying, new combinations at the lunchroom, and the lasting vision of a tall man stand- ing guard at the end of the hallway. -«•Ii I Ik ♦ TECHNOLOGY ? Maybe it was your twinkling eyes or the sweetness of your kiss. Maybe it was your calm, soft voice or the kindness in your heart. All of us go at one time, too bad it was your turn to part. Well always have the memories of all the fun we had. Mostly all the good ones and even some of the bad. Sure Lori we're going to miss you and there is no turning back. What you'll notice most is the spirit that we lack. -Nancy O'Brien 127 Senioritis Is: A schedule filled with study halls. Skipping class for bakery runs. Breaking out in rash over your PSAT scores. Attempting to memorize your social security number. Filling out endless college application forms. Sending graduation announcements to distant relatives you have never met (and hoping for gifts). Standing at the threshold of adulthood - and not quite sure you want to be there.
