A freshman year is a year filled with good times as well as bad times. It is ending our years at the junior high and beginning our new years at the senior high. It is saying goodbye to igneous rocks and hello to pigs and sharks. We will miss Mrs. O'Meara's giggles over the intercom, and Mr. Clymer's detention room. We will miss all of our lyceums and being the hot shots of the school. We will miss all of these things but are looking forward to three fun filled years yet to come! Barlage. We are old enough to push, yet young enough to get pushed. Decisions are constantly being demanded from us. Who will buy our magazines for the magazine sale? What will we do after high school? What will be the prom theme and colors? Most of us made it through the year without losing our minds. Over $7,000 in magazines were sold, the most ever. Prom went smoothly, and most of us still don't know what we ll do after graduation. But then we ll have something to think about next year during lectures in political science. Bahr. At the District meet, the boys placed second and the girls placed third. Jody Schmitz and Dave Carlson were named to the All-District team. Jody placed eighth and Dave placed eleventh. All the starters for the girl's team will be back next year. The boy’s team will only lose one senior, Joe Murphy, who was an excellent team leader. The girls had an overall record of 5-11, and a conference record of 2-5. Having a lot of fun, the girls improved quite a bit making it an enjoyable season. The team will have many good people coming back next year, so it promises to be a good season. The team only lost three seniors. Janel Koepp and Karen Stier were our All-Con- ference selections. On Tuesday, students showed their spirit by wearing hats and buttons, and buying donuts that the cheerleaders sold during the lunch hours. Wednesday and Thursday were dress-up days. Wednesday students wore 50's outfits, while on Thursday they became sophisticated by wearing suits and dresses. Then came the suspense of coronation. The six couples and the Junior Royalty were escorted to the stage by the music of Flight Inc. Julie Johnson and Rick Schmit emceed the program and presented soloist Scott Burtis, and guest speaker Mr. Robert Geyen. Retiring King Matt Lehman, gave his farewell speech and announced Tom Murphy as our new King. Mary Dawn Malin retiring Queen, was then called upon to crown the new Queen. After a brief good-bye, she crowned Carmen Bigaouette as the 1979-80 Homecoming Queen. Friday was red and white day. There was an afternoon pepfest downtown to get the fans and players ready for the evenings game against the Jordan Hubmen. The Tigers were victorious over the Hubmen by a score of 14-8. This record gave the Tigers the best record in Belle Plaines history. In non-conference play, the Tigers outscored their opponents 48- 0. Beginning conference play against a newcomer to the MRC, Mankato Loyola, the Tigers defeated them 21-14 and went on to be undefeated in conference play. Winning the conference title enabled the Tigers to enter an inter- conference game against Watertown-Mayer, who they defeated 12- 7, and advanced to the state play-offs. Traveling to Gaylord, the Tigers took on the Spartans, but lost 19-3. Gaylord then went on to win the State Championship. All-Conference honors went to seniors Pete Fogarty, Dave Halb- maier, Stan Haag, Jeff Sellnow, and Rick Koepp. Pete Bigaouette and Randy Wawrzyniak received honorable mention. One Act Won 1 The District 13A champion one act cast placed third in Region 4A competition held at Archbishop Brady High School in St. Paul. Interpretation of this difficult material showed much sensitivity on the part of these students. Not only lines-but total concept were very clear, commented one regional judge of The Octogenerian. The cast members included Bill Koepp who received the best actor award at district contest, Terry Kucera, Kathy Gregory, Kim Devine, Mark Anderson, Donna Jefferies, Julie Johnson, Scott Burtis, and Beth Malin. Mrs. Deb O'Malley was play director, and assisted by Jill Johnson. Terry dramatically eats his finger. Beth and Julies new fad diet leaves lips as red as blood, skin as white as snow, and eyes . .. The band practices marching for the Homecoming football game. Merry Music Makers Music Makers af BPHS have been noted ior their accomplishments throughout the year. Spirits of Tiger teammates were lifted during the sports season with encouragement from the pep band. The concert band stepped to the beat of the music by marching for Homecoming, the Halloween parade and the St. Patrick's Day parade. They presented three concerts for the public and received three out of a possible three stars at the District Large Group Contest. Out of the nine participants that received stars at the District Solo and Ensamble contest, four received stars at the Regional State competition. Flight Inc. took part in two pop concerts and starred in the District and Re- gional State ensamble contests. The Stage Band pro- vided music for junior and senior high dances to help fund their trips to the St. Cloud State campus during mini-courses, and the Eau Claire Jazz Festival. These accomplishments are why BPHS loves to strike up the band. FLIGHT INC. Mr. Irv Kuch FRONT ROW: Nancy O'Brien, Julie Johnson. Kim Devine, Lon Jones. Jayne Mabee. Annette Otto. In addition to three large group concerts and two small ensemble concerts, the students participated in district and state regional contests. The Senior High Choir, Men's Glee Club, and Women's Glee Club all received superior ratings in the large group contest. Only five supenor ratings were given, and Belle Plaine received three of them' The Choralairs received a supenor rating from one of the judges, and did well also. Small ensembles were particularly active this year with Madn- guys-and-gals being joined by a second mixed pop group. Unlim- ited. and a ninth grade girls pop group. Sunburst. Other ensem- bles were formed around the edges of these groups, most nota- bly a barbershop quartet that serenaded the track squad regularly. Three ensambles and five soloists received superior ratings at the distnct contest, and three of the soloists. Mark Anderson. Beth Malm, and Sandy Carlson received supenor ratings at the state re- gional contest. Two students were especially honored during the year. Mark An- derson was a member of the 1979-80 All-State Chorus, and was chosen as a soloist with that group. Later he was selected as a soloist for a special recital hour at the state music educators con- vention; an honor received by only eight students in the state. Sandy Carlson was chosen as a member of the 1980-81 All-State Chorus, and will participate dunng the summer with that group. Somehow, around the fnnges of all that activity 15 students (13 of whom were in the chorus) rehearsed and performed The Fantas- tic ks. Seniors took 7 of the 8 roles in that production, illustrating how much the 18 graduating chorus members will be missed. Keith McConnell. Student Council keeps busy The Senior High Student Council kept itself busy with many projects this year. Snowfest was a hit again this year, even without the snow, as the seniors and juniors tied for top honors. Spring came, and so did the door-to-door calender sales. The council met a few nights to conquer the town and sell calanders. More fun came when the student council sponsored slave days. The girls were sold one week and the boys the next. It provided for a few excitement filled days. Next came the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance, which was again a big suc- cess. From profits received by the council's activities they donat- ed $500. to the Ronald MacDonald House in St. Paul. Ending the year in style, the council planned the annual end-of-the-year party at Lake Waconia. Skiing, swimming, and Mrs. Houle's beans highlighted the day. Wrestling team has new coach This year's wrestling team was under the direction of Harold Holt, their new Head Coach, finished the season tied for second in the conference with a 5-2 record. Three Tigers were named to the All-Confer- ence team. They were seniors Rick Schmit and Terry Siemon, and junior Brad Stier. Todd Peterson, also a senior received Honorable Mention. The Tiger team had many individual champions throughout the year. Joe Hartmann, Brad Stier, and Rick Schmit were our champions at the Belle Plaine tournament. At the Norwood Invitational Jerome Bahr was the only Tiger to capture first. Joe Hartmann and Terry Siemon were awarded championship trophies at the Comet Invitational in Morristown. When District 13 competition came to an end, the Tigers had seven wrestlers advancing to the Region tournament. Our District Champions were Rick Schmit and Stan Haag. Joe Hartmann and Terry Sie- mon placed second, while Brad Stier, Randy Wawr- zyniak, and Jerome Bahr finished fourth. None of the Tigers advanced to the state competition. Rick Schmit who was one match away, had to default from the tournament because of an injury to his leg. Overall it was a good season. 76 VARSITY WRESTLING TEAM: FRONT: Greg O'Bnen, Joe Hartmann. The Tigers started the season extremely well winning seven of their first eight games. The most satisfying of those wins was a 56-51 upset victory at home against Jordan. During the second half of the season, the Tigers did not play as consistently as they did early in the sea- son. The Tigers played very well at home, compiling a record of 8 wins and 1 loss in games played at Belle Plaine, but the Tigers struggled to a 4 and 6 record on the road. Belle Plaine finished in third place in the Minnesota River Conference standings with a 9-5 record. The most disappointing part of the season was when the Tigers were upset by Waterville in the quarterfi- nals round of the District 13 tournament. Pete Fogarty led the Tigers in most offensive categor- ies. He averaged 22 points per game and was named to the Minnesota River All-Conference team. Paul Fogarty received honorable mention on the All-Con- ference team. VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL: FRONT: Mike Buesgens, Dave Ernst, Dave Halbmaier, Rick Wawrzyniuk, Pete Bigaouette, Gene O'Brien. Hustle and determination were the factors that enabled the Ti- gers to overcome their lack of height, and be com- petitive in almost every game they entered. High- lights of the season included a one point victory over Montgomery that ended the Tigers 24 game losing streak; a 12 point win over Le Sueur, who Belle Plaine had never defeated; and a 24 point victory over Le Center. The Tiger season came to an abrupt end when they fell victim by two points to the eventual district champions, the Le Sueur Giants. Annette Otto was the leading scorer for the Tigers, and was chosen to the All-Conference team. Julie Johnson received Honorable Mention. Julie is the only senior the Tigers will be graduating, so the outlook for future seasons is very bright. VAKTY, BASKETBALL: FRONT: Coach Sauler, Linda Sellnow. Nancy O'Bnen, Rochelle Fogarty. It's when we look back on the past that we find it hard to comprehend all we’ve gone through so quickly and will not go through again. Our class, as kindergart- ners had the privilege o breaking in the new elementary building. We've had moments of laughter and tears. We have learned the difference between right and wrong, giving and taking, loving and hating. We have matured into adults, yet still hold close the memories of our childhood. The staff would also like to express their appreciation for the supportive and financial aid provided to them by the Belle Plaine business people, John Smith of Josten's American Yearbook Comapany, William's Studio of Redwood Falls, School Photographers, Mrs. Blumhoefer our advisor, and the faculty and student body. Because of these people the end is really another beginning. 137
