S 0 Lb. I N c i! I Homecoming is one of the most memorable times of the school year, especially for the seniors. It's a time when the entire school body works together to make it a fun-filled week. The week started with Donut Day. Greasey guys and gals made Tuesday a great Fifties Day. Dress Up Day saw the Levi's left a home and the suits and dresses at school. Thurs- day was Button Day, but the buttons never arrived so we made our own. It was also Hat Day so we all topped the Gi- ants with hats of all sizes, shapes, and colors. At coronation. Matt Lehman and Mary Dawn Schneider were named King and Queen 1978. Their royal court consisted of Ron Gregory and Jill Johnson, Dave Fogarty and Kathy Cote', Dan Halb- maier and Debbie Krant, and Pat Leonard and Janel Peterka. Mark Mahoney and Tammy Morrison were junior royalty. The Rotary exchange students, Dllson Louback and Fred NordlOf, were ushers. Red and white could be seen every- where on Friday. The traditional parade and downtown pep fest were held in the afternoon. The week was highlighted with the big game that night. The Tigers came away victo- rious over the LeSueur Giants. Before we realized it, the last song was played at the dance and Homecoming Week 1978 was over, but the many happy memories remain. -The Royal Homecoming Court- Jackie Klehr and Pat Gaffney were the em- cees for the evening. Mr. and Mrs. Neal Oscarson, former fac- ulty members, were our guest speakers. Homecoming week does strange things to people. The students became dignified and the faculty became frivolous. The scientists who made man. Li’l Abner The comic-strip figures of Dogpatch U.S.A. came to life on our stage with the performance of Li'l Abner . Hark work, much devotion, and many hours made the fall musical a tre- mendous success. -CAST- Li'L Abner - Pat Gaffney; Daisy Mae - Julie Johnson; Pappy Yokum - Keith McConnell; Mammy Yokum - Kathy Cote1; Marryin' Sam - Rich Effertz; Earthquake McGoon - Bill Koepp; Lonesome Polecat - Mark Hartman; Hairless Joe - Jeff Sellnow; Romeo Scragg - Dan Halbmaier; Clem Scragg - Glen Meger; Alf Scragg - Jim Zweber; Moonbeam Me Swine - Ellen Zweber; Four Cronies - Steve Burtis, Glen Meger, Scott Kruger, Mark Anderson; Mayor Dawgmeat - Scott Hallgren; Senator Jack S. They are both undefeated In conference play for the past two years. Janel Pe- terka was given honorable mention. This year the Belle Plalne tennis team took the conference trophy for the second straight year with a 6 - 0 record. They shutout Shattuck both times this season and lost only to Northfield in non-conference competition. The conference ti- tle came down to the last match. Belle Plalne was tied with LeCenter. The girls beat the Wild- cats 3 - 2 to retain their title. No districts were held so the team automatically advanced to re- gional. They first defeated Glencoe, then Far- mington, but lost to a tough St. Paul Academy for the regional title. In regional individual play, Janel Peterka, Nancy O'Brien, and Annette Otto placed second to compete In the Minnesota State Tennis Tournament. All three were defeated In the first round of play by members of the highly rated Rochester Lourdes team. 1. Janel scorches another backhand. 2. Jackie scoops up another one. 3. The season kicked off with losses to two tough non-conference opponents. But we bounced back to shut out Norwood followed by a string of victories. The highlight of the season was defeating LeSueur and winning back the Tom Flynn Award. The LeCenter game came down to the final minute. A sleeper play caught the Wildcats off guard, followed by a fifteen yard touchdown pass and the point after was good for a 7 - 6 victory. In the last game of the season against Arlington, the tables were turned. Our extra point was blocked and the Indians scored in the final minute. The Tigers gave up only five and a half points per game i conference play. They finished with six wins and one loss to tie LeSueur for the title. 1. G0M GO!! GO!! 2. The team, consisting solely of seventh and ninth graders, competed in eight meets and brought home seven trophies. They received their trophies from the Belle Plaine, Le Center, and Norwood Invitation- als. The other trophies came from winning the confer- ence championship, placing second in the Districts, and being the Region 4A runner-up. At Districts, Le Center edged them out 45-46. The highlight of the season for the girls was participating in the state meet at the University of Minnesota on November 4. They placed ninth with Jody Schmitz at 37th place, Margy Schmit at 41, Kim Busch at 52, Lana Thomason at 54, Shelly Busch at 78, Lorie Nelsen at 79, and Jane Zweber at 81st place. Named to the All-Conference and All-District teams were Jody Schmitz and Margy Schmit. With such a young team. Coach Clymer and his girls look forward to a repeat performance next year. Montgomery took the conference title and Belle Plaine crossed the finish line in fifth place. At the district meet at Montgomery, the Tigers had a fourth place finish. It was a rough season for several reasons. The team was young and inexperienced with only two returning lettermen. Mike Fogarty, the num- ber two man, was ill and unable to run for a majority of the season. Last spring, graduation took Sheldon Busch and Jim Delgehausen, both excellent cross country runners. This fall the harriers had the opportu- nity to participate with over 160 runners in one of the largest meets ever held in the state. Although the team had some problems, they will be back strong in 1979. BOYS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM: FRONT: Joe Murphy, Jim Zweber, Bob Miller, Mark Hartmann, Brian Fogarty, Brian Fahey. BACK: Mike Fogarty, Brian Busch, Pat Plonski, Terry Siemon, Dan Rodgers, Dan Fogarty. All-Conference honors went to Margy Schmit and Jody Schmitz. Dan and Mike give it all they've got!! A Season Of ... It was a season of magic, of dreams, of wins, of the addition of the Tiger Family of cheers, or tears, of losses, and of heart aches for the ones we threw away. The team was led by senior co-captains Jill Johnson and Julie Christiansen. At fall practice, the team set specific team goals. The achievement of one special team goal made the season both for the team and the coaching staff. They reached their dream of beating New Prague twice in one season. Both New Prague matches were on Parents' Nights. The highlight of the season was falling 0-16 behind New Prague and coming back to win the game and the match. The Tigers lost some close ones through physical and mental errors, but overall it was a super season. The Tigers finished in the top half of the conference for the first time. They fin- ished their season with the best record yet. They were 7-8, but were beaten by Bethlehem Academy of Faribault in District competition. All-Conference honors went to Karen Stier and honorable mention to Sue Hennen. Leading scorers for the season were Karen Stier, Julie Christiansen, and Linda Sellnow. Sue Hennen led the Tigers in total statistics. Graduation will only take three sen- iors so next season looks very positive. 1. In the fall, Mr. Perkins gave his lecture on donating money for lights at the tennis courts. The council voted to give the Tennis Association $725. The sec- ond annual Snowfest activities were a tremendous success, even though the seniors lucked out and won by two points! Spring meant bad weather and door- to-door calendar sales. The second end of the year picnic was held on June 10. Mrs. Houle's beans were again the hit of the party! It was a successful year even though the council still faces the same decisions. They raised money from conces- sions, dances, and a spring garage sale. Money was donated to the Belle Plaine Tennis Association for lighting. The council sponsored three lyceum pro- grams during the year. In the winter, Martin and Jeter, a musical duo performed for grades 7-12. The junior high watched a wildlife program called Nature's Bad Actors. In the spring, they had a glass- blower demonstrate his skill. For their pleasure, they had a record dance and a disco dance provided by Disco World. They concluded the year by spon- soring the film, Apple Dumpling Gang, for the ju- nior high and elementary students. 1. Jane and Rosie help get ready for the garage sale. At the District 13 One-Act Play Contest on January 27, Pat Gaffney was named best actor and Belle Plaine and Jordan advanced to the Region IV contest. On February 3, Belle Plaine competed against seven schools and came away with the region championship trophy and the opportunity to compete at the state contest the following Saturday. At Rarig Center on the University of Minnesota campus, the cast viewed many quality plays before they performed in hopes of achieving a superior rating. Only two schools earned superiors but as one judge stated, You are all champions. 1. The cast of The Counting People consisted of Julie Christiansen, Val Walton, Kathy Cot6, Jill Johnson, Scott Burtis, Ann Devine, Bill Koepp, Pat Gaffney, The Tree, and Rich Effertz. 2. Journalism Staffs Work Hard All Year Under the direction of their advisors, Mrs. McOmber and Mrs. Wenisch, the TIGER TOPICS and annuai staffs work hard all year. Karen Buesgens served as editor for the TIGER TOPICS and Kathy Cot was editor for the TIGERIAN. In September, both groups traveled to the University of Minnesota campus for the annual journalism convention and obtained much valu- able information. But it was not all work! TIGER TO- PICS staff enjoyed birthday treats all year. The annual staff gathered at Bevie Lou's house for brainstorming, disco lessons, and pigging out . All in all, the two staffs enjoyed a fun and productive year. They hope their efforts are appreciated! 1. Karen signs another yearbook. Don't you have one to sign Terry? Speech Team Sends Four To State Meet The Belle Plaine speech team finished its most successful season ever by winning three team trophies. At the Minnesota Riv- er Tournament hosted by Belle Plaine our team won the third place trophy. We took second place in District 13 competition and at the Region 4A Speech Festival, Belle Plaine placed second, ahead of 22 other schools. Region champions for Belle Plaine were Ellen Zweber, Julie Christiansen, Val Walton, and Mark Anderson. All four ad- vanced to the state meet held at St. Cloud. We had three other students in region competition who were second alternates. They were Janelle Laabs, Bill Koepp, and Lee Cowgill. Completing the region team were Julie Johnson, Kathy Gregory, Kalli Burtis, and Kim Devine. At the state meet, Val Walton repeated as state champion in original oratory. She was state champion in 1977. Mark Ander- son was fourth in significant speeches and Ellen Zweber was fourth In serious drama. This is the best Belle Plaine has done at the state meet. Each student received a medallion from the Minnesota State High School League. Coached by Charles Perkins, Pixy Kellogg, and Jon Logelin, six students earned the Outstanding Speaker Award. This award was presented to the top point winners during the speech season. Those qualifying were Val Walton, Julie Christiansen, Lee Cowgill, Mark Anderson, Ellen Zweber, and Kathy Gregory. Julie, Kathy, Val, and Mark, also received All-Conference hon- ors at the Minnesota River Valley Conference Meet held at LeCenter. Ellen, Mark, Val, and Julie attended the state meet. The performance goes on. The curtain closes. The gym is empty. It sounds so simple and easy but yet many hours go into producing a musical or spring play. The drama guild helps in numerous ways to make sure the produc- tions go smoothly. Drama guild members build sets, handle sound effects and lighting, get out publicity, apply make-up, and do acting. They keep busy on stage and behind the curtains. They work hard and their efforts are appreciated. The Beat Goes On The band put forth an outstanding amount of effort this year and have been greatly rewarded. The year began with the pep band supporting the athletics. The first pops concert as well as the winter and spring concert were held this year. The band kept their legs as well as their lips in shape by marching for Homecoming and St. Patrick's Day. Twelve stars were received by the thirteen entries at the District Solo and Ensemble Contest. From these twelve, nine received stars at the Region State lev- el. A total possible three stars were won by the band at the Large Group Contest. The band ended the year by playing for graduation. We have to admit that the band definitely ended on the right note. Is On The Move ... Belle Plaine's Future Homemakers of America and their advisor Mrs. Braun kept the junior high building active. In October, they sponsored a Halloween party for pre-schoolers and they at- tended the District Convention at Osseo. They started November with a skit to cheer on the cross country team. December meant their disco dance, Christmas caroling and party, and wreath selling. Bi-monthly meetings at lunch hour and after school kept all the girls involved. On March 27, members took their spring trip to the Om- nitheater and saw Genesis . Potluck lunch for $1.25 was served on March 20. The traditional Sadie Hawkins dance on April 6 meant jeans, patches, freckles, and a hankering for a guy. The girls kept a scrapbook of the year's activities and proudly showed it at the three day State FHA Convention in Minneapolis. A Climb Your Own Mountain spring banquet was held in May and new officers for 1979-80 were announced. Let's keep up the activities Future Homemakers of America. On The Go The Future Farmers of America under president Blaise Fogarty and advisor Maynard Harms, re- mained active throughout the past year. Besides at- tending meetings, the boys worked for worthy causes. Once again, the FFA had their annual corn drive for Camp Courage to further exceed their $10,000 total contributions and collections of last year. On September 4, a demonstration team showed lamb fitting at the Minnesota State Fair. Team members were Blaise Fogarty, Keith Kuhl, Dave Siegle, Matt Mellgren, Richard Koepp, and Jerry Plonski. Our team placed second. Members of the chapter received a first, two seconds, a fourth, a seventh, and an eighth place ribbon in the Farm Mechanics exhibit. Ken Glisczinski represented Belle Plaine in the Safe Tractor Driving Contest. Besides all this going, the boys still found time to attend the National F.F.A. Convention in Kansas City. In recognition of Mr. Harms' receipt last fall of the Honorary American Farmer Award, the Ford Motor Company donated a Ford tractor power train to our school. 69 Strange Happenings In Mini Courses On January 31, February 1 and 2, the students participated in thirty-eight activities known as mini courses. The most popular course was downhill skiing. It attracted over 150 students. Backpacking, disco, music from noise, and self defense, new courses added this year, proved to be popular. Scott Burtis made the following observations of mini courses in the February TIGER TOPICS. Jim Zweber learned that it is easier to get a ride home than to ski all the way from Prior Lake. Mr. Keo- hane learned that it is easier to go around a tree than through it while riding a snowmobile. Kim Devine found out how hard it is to jump a tree while downhill skiing. Jeff Sellnow discovered it is kind of hard to go swimming with a backpack on. It is even harder when there is ice on the river. Karen Blaha found out that you will knock down a lot more pins if you throw the bowling ball forward instead of backward. 71 Wrestlers Finish 9-6 Overall This years team was very young with only two seniors wrestling regularly. Next years team will be more ex- perienced with a real chance at both the conference and district titles. Four seniors finished their careers this year. Tom Miller, a five year letter winner who received All-Conference as a freshman, ranked in the top ten of all time winners at Belle Plaine. During the middle of his junior year, Larry Kroells joined the wrestling squad as a heavyweight. He did a great job and received honorable mention this year. Dan Fogarty wrestled for six years and was a valuable leader of this years district team. Frank Lynch, a six year wrestler, received third place in his first District Tournament to end his career on a high note. The team finished with nine wins and six losses. They ended 4-3 In the conference. At the match with Ar- lington, it was tied going into the heavyweight match. Larry Kroells came through with a pin to win 31-25. The entire Tiger team put forth their best effort for a 61-0 victory over Mayer Lutheran. This was the best record for the Belle Plaine basketball team in many years. The Tigers won their first three games of the season over Watertown, Norwood, and Le Center. They then lost three of four just before Christmas vaca- tion. After traveling to St. Cloud for scrimmages during the holiday break, the Tigers won eight of their last eleven regular season games. This placed the Tigers third in the conference standings. In the District 13 tournament, the Tigers beat Le Sueur and Jordan to reach the finals. In the cham- pionship game, the Tigers had an extremely cold shooting night and were beaten by Cleveland 65-51. Dave Fogarty, the Tigers leading scorer and re- bounder, was named to the All-Conference team. Pete Fogarty was given honorable mention. Boys Track Team- District Champions The track season started with the first four weeks spent inside which limited the amount of work which could be accomplished. Six meets were cancelled due to bad weather. The Tigers won four, placed second in four meets, and took one third place. Included in their vic- tories was the successful defense of their District 13 ti- tle which they won last year. Our conference champi- ons were Mike Fogarty in the high jump, Ron Seaver in the 100 meter dash, and Tim Beck in the 300 meter hurdles. Our district champions were Dean in the high hurdles, Ron in the 100 meter dash, and the 400 meter relay team of Tim Beck, Cory Legg, Bob Soller, and Ron Seaver. Eleven boys qualified for the Region 4 meet at Farmington in twelve different events. This was the largest number of participants we have ever sent to the Region Meet. New records were set in the shot put and discus by Stan Haag. Stan's records were 141' in the discus and 46'3M in the shot put. Dean's hurdles were 15.5 seconds. Mike Fogarty tied the high jump record of 6' set by Dave Halbmaier last year. The relay team had a 45.6 time. Track will have 19 returning lettermen for the 1980 season so be prepared for record breaking. 95 Three Girls Advance To Regions The girls track team competed in eight meets and won three of them. In the conference, the girls finished fifth and the district sixth. Three girls, Jenny Cote', Jody Schmitz, and Lana Thomason, went on to region competition. Lana finished sixth in the 800 meter run for Belle Plaine's only points. The team was comprised mostly of junior high girls. Thirty-four of forty girls were in the junior high. Twenty-five girls were awarded letters with fifteen girls earning their first letter. With all this young tal- ent, the future looks very promising. 1. Baseball Team Takes Championship The baseball Tigers had an excellent season as they won thirteen games against just two losses to win the Minnesota River Conference title. This title was the first in the history of the school and also the most wins of any high school baseball team. The entire season was a highlight not only for the team members but for the school to watch as well. Some of the more out- standing moments were two six game winning streaks piled up by the players and the superb consistency of play by the team for the season. Of course, the biggest disappointment was the semi-final loss in the District playoffs to LeSueur to end the season. Fourteen letters were presented. Matt Lehman, Tom Miller, Pete Fogarty, and Dave Huber were named to the All-Conference team. Once the girls got outside they worked hard and started off the season with a 15- 12 win over LeSueur. The girls lost their next three, but got back on the right track and compiled a six game winning streak. The girls entered the District Tournament on May 21 against LeCenter. A 21-13 win advanced them to the semi-final game against Le- Sueur, where they suffered a disappointing loss. Jill Johnson and Donna Herrmann were the co-captains for this year's team. The revival was accidental but proved interesting to many who had been involved in the 1964 production. This light comedy centered around a haunted house purchased by a young couple and the humorous events that took place there. Cast Duff O'Hara ........ Joan O'Hara ........ Mr. VanBuren ....... Thank you to Wil- liam's Studio of Redwood Falls and John Smith of Josten's American Yearbook Company for their help in produc- ing our book. We appreciate the understanding of our administration and faculty on picture taking days . We also value Mr. Heitkamp and his photographers for helping us meet our deadlines. A special thanks to all the Belle Plaine business people who helped finance this book. We can't forget one special lady, our advisor Bev Wenisch.
