STUDENT COUNCIL Since a prime purpose of American education is to train for citizenship, it seems most fitting that students themselves have an organization through which the study of the theory of effective citizenship can be given active expression. The student council serves this purpose. A basic function of the council is to provide such services as the school finds necessary and to assume responsibilities delegated by school authorities. The council also has one role which no other organization can match - that of being a truly representative body. If a council does not provide for effective representation to deal with school problems, it is failing in one of its most essential functions. The year 1964-65 found the Belle Plaine Student Council successfully organizing and carry- ing out many worthy projects. The most noteable achievement for the year was the establishment of the National Honor Society. The council members can be rightly proud of their work on this project. Other projects included overseeing the concession stand, assisting on noon hall-duty, putting on the Snowball Dance, purchasing a council banner, conducting school elections, and organizing the Awards Day program. The officers of the council displayed a good quality of leadership and are to be congratulated for this fine work. Other councils will have something to strive for to match this fine record. 34 FIRST ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: J. Otto, J. McCue, S. Fogarty. SECOND ROW: G. Hayes, J. Johnson, J. Huber, C. The 1963 Homecoming festivities were officially under way as the senior boys coaxed the traditional bonfire into a tower of flames. Selections by the band and a few short speeches composed the program, which was followed by a snake dance and a pep fest in main street. The peak of tension was reached as Glenna Schultz passed behind queen candidates Joan Zellmer, Linda Buesgens, and Janice Otto before crowning Joan as our 1963 Homecoming Queen. Her reign officially began as she and her attendants took their positions for the parade through town. To add zest to the festivities, the Tigers defeated the Jordan Hubmen in the pre-dance football clash. Music was furnished for the following dance by the Newman Club Dance Band of Mankato State College. The Junior Class's winning float, Ar Guy'll Sock 'Em FIRST ROW: LEFT TO RIGHT: J. Johnson, G. AND Music by Lee James. The Junior Class chose as the theme for the Junior-Senior Prom held May 2nd Lollipops and Roses . Long hours of planning and decoration went into the creation of the evening. Shades of pink took the shape of a false ceiling, sides of the gym, roses and Fairyland lollipops. The Lee James Band, centered in the rose covered, old fashioned band stand, provided the music for the evening. The song Lollipops and Roses was also played for the Grand March which began the dancing. The traditional banquet was held in the cafeteria at 6:00 where a roast beef dinner was served. Mr. Lindquist and Mr. Clappier gave talks based on lines from the theme song. Denny Goehring, Senior Class President, read the Last Will and Testament. MC Denny Moriarty, Junior Class President, read the Prophecy of the class of '64. Many dreams were fulfilled and memories made this enchanting spring evening. It's not all fun.
