The Tigerian Published by the Senior Class BELLE PLAINE COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL BELLE PLAINE, MINNESOTA To the present and future community of Belle Planie we the class of 1956 dedicate this annual with the hope of bringing this school closer to you--the community. You are develop ing the citizens of tomorrow. The students appreciate the fine school you've built for them. It stands as a symbol of what a community can do when it has the interest of its young people in mind. The future students, also, will enjoy and make use of these splendid facilities. So through these following pages, come with us along the path of our school's first year of activities. Dedication On February 5th the new com- munity High School was dedicated. W.A. Wettergren, secretary and treasurer of the State School Board Association, was the guest speaker at the dedication program. The band and chorus gave sev- eral selections. The songs sung by the chorus were Hark, the Vesper Hymn and Wonderful Copenhagen. God of Our Fathers, Hymn of Freedom, and The Star-Spangled Banner were played by the band. The Student Council guided the people around the school after the program. Lunch was served in the school cafeteria. They strived to make this year the happiest and most memorable of them all. Their first big event was Homecoming and it was a real homecoming for all the alumni. The seniors gave a robe for the coronation, to be used year after year. April 21 marked the night of their senior class play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. In the spring the seniors went on a social field trip to visit the Ford plant and the Mu- seum of Natural History at the University of Minnesota. Senior Skip Day, May 17, came and the seniors knew their high school years were coming to an end. They went to Taylors Falls for a picnic and then to Minneapolis to spend the evening anyway they wanted to. Graduation, May 31, came and as these thirty-nine seniors received their diplomas they became alumni. They will never forget their years at Belle Plaine High School. It's memories will linger long in their hearts. JAMES BAILEY Band 1.2.3. 4; Football 3.4; Class Play 3,4; Projector Club. ELAINE BESSEL Chorus 3,4. EDNA BUSCH Class Play 3. We find Dick Taylor and Ralph Zellman in the locker room talk- ing over the past football season. Dick was chosen the Most Valu- able Player by his team mates and Ralph received honorable mention on the All-District Team. Although the record of the '55 grid season is not too impressive on paper, the future looks brighter for the red and white gridders. The Tiger's had eleven returning lettermen on the squad. In the first two contests the Tigers tied Arling- ton 0-0 and dumped Waterville 13-0. A powerful Montgomery grid machine con- quered the Tigers after which the Tigers bowed to LeCenter and had Jordan dump them at Homecoming. The Tigers then edged I_eSueur 13-7. In the final game of the season the Tigers were upset by a weak New Prague team 27-0. The season ended with a record of two wins, four losses, and one tie. Basketba I LEFT TO RIGHT: G. Engfer, L. As the moleskins are stored away in moth balls and the leaves begin to fall, the spot- lite switches from the gridiron to the hardwoods, where we find hard at work coach Jim Hill and his Tiger fold, who are getting ready for their oncoming schedule of pitfalls and triumphs. Coach Hill had his work cut out for him to try to make a winning team out of the Tigers. In the Tiger's first game of the season a hustling Bethany five beat the Tigers by three points 48-45. In the second game of the season the Belle Plaine quintet won going away from a weak LeSueur team for the Tiger's only conference victory of the season. After this game the Tiger five could not seem to get back on the winning trail. During the rest of the sea- son they lost fourteen straight contests, the main highlights being the Montgomery game in which they lost by a score of 58-51, and the Cleve- land ame which they lost During the Christmas Tournament held in Belle Plaine on December 28 and 29, the Tigers lost out in the first round to Central. Central went on to win the Tourna- ment by beating Arling- ton in the final. Jordan downed the Tigers in the consolation game to take third place. In the District 13 Tournament the Belle Plaine quintet won from LeSueur before losing to a hustling Arlington team. Baseball J. Trimbo, John Keating, G. Engfer, K. Farrell, J. Buesgens, D. Maus, L. The Pep Club learned new yells for the games and bought red beanies to show their membership. 29 Band Mr. Richard has been responsible for de- veloping the musical ability of all 67 of these members. During this past year he directed the be- ginners, the junior band, a newly organized dance band, the pep band, and the senior band. His summer months are also occupied with many parades in which he tries to keep the senior band in step. 30 ™ • — „onW-E.KoepP. , « «. ■ ■““■ S3S-. '• j 5 5. p Tay 01 q ua . E uoUinget ® -t ROW: E. They put many hours of work into the formations of a boat, gun, tepee, and cross for Homecoming. With the new school the band acquired some new instruments. One was the tubular chimes which was shown to the public for the first time at the annual Christmas Concert. Every year the band travels to LeSueur for the Band Festival. This year they played the Belmont Overture, Trumpet Voluntary, and Chimes of Victory March, for which they received an A rating. The climax of all the band's activities was its annual spring concert. This concert, the first to be held in the new auditorium, was held on May 3, under the direction of Mr. Francis Richard. The concert was different in that two solos were played with the band-a saxophone solo by Paul Tillquist and a piano solo by Irene Stier. The band also played a lyceum concert for the LeSueur High School Students. Junior Band LEFT TO RIGHT, FRONT ROW; M. Effcrtz, A. Ramstead, B. White, M. Sat . K. Klehr. C. Elder, M. Johnson, J. STUDENT COUNCIL This year, the Student Council, with a membership of twenty, the four officers from the ninth through twelfth grades and the president and treasurer from the seventh and eighth grades, accomplished a large variety of things for a newly or- ganized group. The school voted Ruth Laabs as President of the Council and the members of the Council elected La Vonne Hagerman as Vice President, Liz Schmid as Secre- tary, and Mary Jo Fogarty as Treasurer. Miss Elizabeth Wellner and Mr. Clarence Soley were chosen by the faculty, as the advisors for the Council. The group of Council members were divided into five groups with five in each group. These groups and activities were: Greeting Committee--welcoming new students, helping when the school sponsors public showings of the school, and generally helping with the different things that the Council or school put on. The Bulletin Board Committee --keeping the bulletin board decorated to add to the interest of the school notices. The Gym Committee--to keep order at the different assemblies of the school year. The Lost and Found Department--to handle all lost and found articles and make a list so that they earn be returned to their owners. Other things that the Council did was selling refreshments at home high school baseball games, furnishing a free movie to the high school, and guiding the sixth graders through the new school. The Council also wrote up a constitution and this will help in the organization of next year's Student Council. 39 Annual Staff LEFT TO RIGHT, FIRST ROW; Miss Lester, L. Hagerman, P. Chard, E. Work continued until the annual was completed two weeks after the school year ended. Projectionists Club Photography Club With the installation of a darkroom in our new school, the photography club was organized. Under the direction of Mr. Richard and Mr. Harms, the club elected its officers for the year. Stan Effertz was elected their first president, with Shirlee Druke as vice-president, LaVonne Hagerman as secretary, and Mike Newell as treasurer. The purpose of the club is to promote an understanding of and an interest in photography. We find Terry Moriarty and George Hoelz setting up the projector for another film. These boys are two of the students who have been kept busy during the year showing films to the various classes. Mr. Soley acted as advisor for this group. Speech During the past year the speech department has been very active. Early in the year the speech class studied make-up and theater light- ing. Just before Christmas the speech class presented several skits for the All-school Christmas program. Dick Taylor narrated the story of the original Carols at the Christmas concert. This spring the district 13 One-Act Play Contest was held in our new school. We had five local declam winners although none of them received A ratings in the district contest held at LeSueur.
