MILES' BIRTHDAY AND TRANSFER Happy Birthday Boot W.. .aaa e , Surprised lVliles, SDL had been aboard the ship for a long time. We were all happy for him when he got his orders to shore duty, but it was a sad kind of happiness. The uFat Manf, with his wonderful sense of humor and heart of gold, had, in his years aboard the BELLE GROVE, won the friendship, affection and respect of all hands. The night before he left, when he gave his farewell address on the 1 MC, the ship was silent as a tomb as he spoke. Even the hardest of old salts could be seen choking up a little. ,gm , ffkpfgzws L sn- E,?i ' 'Y r A 11,455 fees , 'M x 0 ' -..,....- V To the Eat Mann: We wish you the smooth- est of sailing and every possible happiness! NOW SET THE SPECIAL SEA AND . . . No need to even finish that phrase. After months of preparation, it was time to go. The Boots and the bachelors were anxious to get underway, the married men were kind of moody, not relishing the thought of being away from their families for over half a year. But emotions soon had to give way to the business at hand. Men automatically started functioning in their jobs as the Special Sea and Anchor Detail was set, preparing the 2 for casting off the final line. Once underway, there was little time for a final look at the familiar sight of Long Beach Harbor before training exercises began filling everyoneis days, helping to make the long haul over the Pacific seem shorter. ,A , I 1 I W P V ,?:9y- E Y K 3 F-P-tw,-15,1 ggi'-as .
