Now, as we leave school and take our places in the world, we want to present you with a token of our esteem and devotion. The numerous little things that we may seem to have passed by unnoticed will never be forgotten- they're stamped indelibly on our minds and hearts. These pages are our own efforts. They consti- tute the final work of our high school days. They're about us. We dedicate them to a group of the finest men and women in the world--OUR FATHERS AND MOTHERS. CLASS OF '51 2. a 1 L 3 5 5 'N hun' Board of Education The Belle Center Board of Education is composed of five prominent citizens of Belle Center who have the task of managing the intellectual problems and business transactions which require their attention throughout the year. They give their time for the betterment of the school, without pay. These citizens spend countless hours in deliberation, listen to much discussion, and occasionally receive abuse, and sometimes without thanks for lis- tening. we all appreciate the thing these men have done to make B. Our might at that time was not looked on very seriously by the teachers, but their looks upon us reminded us of the greedy ogres of our Fairy Tales and their classrooms as so many caves wherein they could destroy us. We were surely a cosmopolitan group. There were the Templetons and the Krouses from North Wood, the Korcks from Yelverton, the Minters and the Myerses from Jumbo, and, of course, the Millins, Rosses, Houchins, Fabers and many more came from our town--Belle Center. These and many others came flocking in from all parts of our fair county. In September, 1945, we started our final half of school. We were in the High School Building now, and we had Miss Dixon as our home room teacher. In the 8th grade we moved to the back study hall and were in the same room with the Greeny-Freshmen. AT LAST WE WERE IN HIGH SCHOOL: We entered our high school career with our initiation part--some initiation--can you remember, Mr. Dodge? By the time we were Sophomores we were noted for our hilarious parties. Also this year the girls left the boys behind and began to cast their eyes on upperclassmen! We had another home room teacher by the time we were Juniors. She was Miss Helen Irwin. We started thinking really seriously this year about preparing for our Senior trip. Also we wanted to give the Seniors a banquet. We sold refreshments at the ball games, sold candy at noon, and presented a play Along Came Kilroy. At the end of this year Betty Broadstone left us. At last we had reached our Senior year. An experience that no one should miss. Miss Ola Dixon came back to be our home room teacher. At the beginning of this year Jack Kerns left us after completing ll years at Belle Center School. We are graduating with 19 members, ten of which started school at Belle Center Public School. And now we are ready to depart from Belle Center High but I hope we shall never forget those friendships formed during our years together. Even though many little things have happened there which caused us unhappiness, we are truly sorry to leave and we shall remember not only our labors and trials but also our good times while striving under the colors of the Class of Sl --MAROON AND SILVER. National Honor Society The object of this society is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the develop- ment of character of students. Membership is based on scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Can- didates shall have spent one year in Logan County High Schools and shall be members of the Junior or Senior Classes. Eligible candidates must not have below an 857. average. Last spring Barbara Akers, Dolores Zimmerman, and James Templeton were chosen from Belle Center. As this was written before the candidates were chosen for this year, we were unable to include their names. Senior Scholarship Test- A test, put out by Ohio State University, is given in Bellefontaine each fall to the eligible Seniors in Logan County. A number of scholarships are awarded by Ohio State, if the winners go to Ohio State. This year Belle Center's entrants were: Rosella Krock, Donna Minter, Alice Templeton, Jean Zahller, and David Brandyberry. It was written on his performance tour of the United States. He is now a world renowned magician. .Tune 1: Detroit-As I stepped off the train platform with my beautiful assistant, Joann Ross, I was handed a letter from David Brandyberry, the new President of the Lockheed Airplane Inc. That evening we had dinner with Jack Kerns, now a famous radio announcer. June Z: Cleveland--We borrowed Jack's car and drove to Cleveland early this morning. I got tickets for the Cleveland Indians Baseball Game in the afternoon. We were very surprised to see Tom Millin as he played third base for the Indians. In this game, Tom acted as nervous as a kitten. After the game, when we talked with him, I found out the reason. His wife, Brenda QMyersJ, was in the hospital making Tom a father. .Tune 5: Chicago--This afternoon we had some spare time, so we decided to visit the Public Library. What do you think we saw? Marilyn Rockhold was the chief libra- rian. After seeing the sights of Chicago, we were asked to go to the home of Alice fTempletonQ and her husband for dinner. Alice is the owner of a small hat shop in Chicago. Some of her own creations have reached the Paris Fashion Shops. June 10: Belle Center--The first stop we made was the Elm Cafe. There we were surprised to see Gerald I-Iouchin in the uniform of the U. S. Army Air Force. After talking with him, I found that he had been in the army since he graduated from West Point. I-Ie is now a Three-Star General. Before we left, Rosella Willeke came in. I understand she has been teaching the third grade here in Belle Center for five years. In the afternoon, I went to Kenton. On the way I passed two very beautiful farms. Later I found out from Kenny Hesser that one was owned by Virginia lFaberj and her husband, Bob Morris. Kenny said the other one was his. While in Kenton, I ran into Peggy QPricej and her husband. They are the proud parents of five children. After I got back to Belle Center, I decided to visit the office of the Herald Voice. I found that Rosella fKrockl was the Editor-in-Chief of the local paper. June 14: Columbus--Had some time, so we went through the Capitol Building. We were very happy to find that Donna Minter was a beautiful secretary to the governor. We could very easily see that she is a very hard worker and always got to the Core of her work. '-i June 18: Denver--Imagine our surprise when we saw Coral Lease in the front row of the theater. We understand she lives here now. June 21: Salt Lake Citye-On our way West, we stopped to see the Great Salt Lake. After a long ride we enjoyed a dinner with Jean Zahller, who is now the head nurse in a large Salt Lake City hospital. June 27: Los Angeles--Just as we were leaving we met Alice fPatrickj, who is the happy mother of three children. June 30: Hollywood--We went to see Paul Krouse's latest picture. He is a famous movie star, and also the best dressed man in Hollywood. Daun McPherson, who is now one of MGM's leading cartoonists, entertained us for the evening at his Beverly Hills estate. A Wednesday, January 10, 1951 at 7:30 P. M. the Senior Class and their sponsor, Miss Dixon were served a very appetizing dinner at the Kenton Country Club with our host being Mr. James Stephey. Mr. Stephey was the photographer who took our Senior Class pictures and the pictures for our annual. There were five members unable to attend. 14 FIRST ROW: SECOND ROW: THIRD ROW: FOURTH ROW: FIRST ROW: SECOND ROW: THIRD ROW: NOT SHOWN: FIRST ROW: SECOND ROW: THIRD ROW: Grade Eleven Left to Right: Ruth Newman, Barbara Patrick, Caroline Phillips, Judy Bazzle, Norma James, Madge Schultz, Jeannette Ross, Helen Prater, Jocele Clarridge, Marilyn Doyle, Miss Truinbull. The Initiation lasted one day and one evening. The daytime initiation was based upon appearance such as dress. The girls supposedly were to look like old ladies. The boys were half and half - they looked like a painted doll combined with an old tramp. . Together they looked like they had escaped from Lima State Hospital. The evening program began with group games. A worm eating contest was held next as part of the initiation, but soaked spaghetti was used in place of worms. The evening concluded with delicious refreshments consisting of ham salad sandwiches, potato chips, and cider. The Freshmen left the party feeling they were full pledge high school members. F. F. A. In the afternoon a parade was led by Judy Bazzle riding horseback, followed by the Band, Queen and her attendants, and floats from each of the upper six grades. In the evening there was a play, crowning of the Queen, masquerade judging, and then the concessions were opened The Homecoming Game The game was played on a cold and miserable night with a sharp, biting wind blowing across the field. But, regardless of weather, many local fans flocked to see the Eagles come to an overwhelming victory over the Degraff Pirates. During the half the Queen was crowned in a very cool, but colorful ceremony. The Queen and her attendants were brought onto the field preceding the band. After a few numbers, the Band formed a heart while the ceremony was taking place. The Queen's attendants were introduced in order: 7th, Peggy Rhoades, 8th, Joan Johnston, 9th, Annabelle Bailey: 10th Ann Laughlin, llth, Marylyn Doyle. Then the Queen, Donna Minter, was introduced to the captains of each team after which last year's Queen, Shirley Swartz., crowned her Queen of the Homecoming Football Game. After the football game the alumni, high school students and teachers, both football teams and cheerleaders were invited to attend a 50-50 Dance in the Belle Center Gymnasium. Library 'Mrs. Rhoades has been working very hard the past two years to get the library books recorded and classified. We have a very nice selection of fiction, history, science, biology and literature. Others sources of information are the Encyclopedia Britannicas, World Books, and Atlas. ,Student Council The Student Council is the Student Governing Body of the high school building. The officers are chosen by the upper six grades and each class is responsible for choosing their representatives to serve on the Council. b The Halloween Carnival, the first Homecoming Football Game and Dance ever held here, and the Christmas Scene on our school lawn have all been under the auspices of the Student Council. Arranging for Honor Letters and the revisal of a Council Constitution are being completed by the committees in charge. C Chapel Committee The Chapel programs this year have proved to be very interesting. Each Senior, and his committee made up of students from grades seven to eleven, have had charge of one chapel during the year. Mrs. Rhoades and the Chape1,Committee members have helped with ideas and plans for their programs. The committees are to becongratulated for the responsibility they have taken and for the fine manner in which they have carried it out. 30 Basketball A FIRST ROW: Left to Right: John Royer, Manager: Russ Brown, Russ Royer, David Brandyberry, Tom Millin, Gerald I-Iouchin, Duane Hughes, Don I-Iouchin, Lewis Ammons, Marion McFarland, Manager. Unfortunately, Belle Center did not fare as well in basketball as they did in football. We played twelve league games and won three. We played four non-league games and won two. This record, however, does not give an accurate picture of the team. Several of these games were lost by only a few points and in several of them Belle Center led up to the last quarter only to fade and be beaten. In seven of these games Belle Center lost by a total of twenty-four points: less than four points a game. Only four will be lost by graduation this year: Gerald I-louchin, Thomas Millin, Paul Krouse, and David Brandyberry. Belle Center's Reserve Squad had a better season than the Varsity, winning ten and losing six. Football During the last of August in the fall of 1950 an entirely new sport was introduced into Logan County and Belle Center. Six Man Football. Essentially it is the same as eleven man football, but it is a faster game with emphasis on speed and deception rather than power. Even though Belle Center had the smallest and lightest of the four teams we still had a good season winning three and losing three. We.also ran up the highest score in the county against Lewistown-55 to 26. Next year Belle Center will have a more experienced team losing only three by graduation: Kenneth I-lesser, Paul Krouse, and David Brandyberry. The Girls' Softball team played three games this fall winning against Huntsville and losing to Lewistown and Lakeview. Ping-pong Last year in Ping-pong,.
