'40, This year's Bell varsity was plagued by sickness and injury. ln spite of these drawbacks, the Bells managed a 6-18 overall record. John Nlahaney, Tim Schmitt and Ray Fellows, although ill, were outstanding. Juniors Steve Page, Tom Griffin. Brian Laney and Louis Williams also played very well. This year varsity had begun the season with very little experience, but wound up with a great deal of experience, and next years outlook is a good one. xl The Bellarmine Martial Arts program is a class in Karate and Kung Fu. Kempo and Go Ju Kai Karate is taught by sophomores Kirk Mossing and Pete Ostner. Although the students' training entails how to kill, the skills learned are to be used only as a last resort when attacked: verbal abuse must be ignored by the student of Karate, Kung Fu, which is a more subtle and flowing form of self-defense than Karate, requires very little physical strength, but a great deal of concentration and practice to perfect. The Martial Arts Class begins each session with a period of meditation and exercise. This is to relax the student to leave the class with the knowledge that he need not be hostile. and when there is no other possible alternative to hostility, he will be prepared to cope with the situation.
