In all, they travel some twelve thousand miles a day by train, car, bus, and bicycle. Train commuters know all too well the problems of travel: missed trains, lost tickets, lborrowed tickets, etc.l battles with Southern Pacific employees. Talk among several commuters calls for a Commuter Political Party. Automobile and Bike travelers have one problem in common: where to park. Bus travelers have to wait for the bus, for the bus won't wait for them. Foot travelers have their feet to worry about. - They all come to Bellarmine for one purpose: to learn. Bellarmine Illusions lShirle, this is an illusionl To describe Bellarmine College Preparatory as ORDINARY is wrong to say the least, an antonym to say the most. 0' 4 n 11 0115 Oman bfi' Trying to inspire spirit and unity through Bellarmine despite a slow football season. the cheerleaders: Rob Nlicheletti, Tom Empey, Marc Pellegrini, Mark Atkins and Jim Holm organized a sense of urgency characterized by scornful taunts and made charges through the stands. Spirit Sings the Blues Due to heavy rain and a somewhat weary football team, Spirit Week lacked its traditional vitality. However, the beard contest grew at a furious rate. The gym was packed for the volleyball game and the students watched lVlr. Stickney, lVlr. Lauro, and other starving students dive into their plates for the pie-eating contest. Tom Bacon emerged victorious and was awarded a stomach ache. Seven freshmen had to be dragged to the infirmary after the debacle. The Marshmallow Contest at lunch bloomed into a beautiful fight in the cafeteria. which spread throughout the campus and died in the classrooms, Micheleti follows game Students await Anonymous Guru i,f. He courageously picked himself up on both occasions and kept battling. The Bellarmine Cross Country Team finished fourth in the WCAL. behind powerful St. Francis. Saint Ignatius, and Riordan. But this fact does not tell the whole story. This year's team was a far cry from past cellar-dwellers. Four harriers topped the best times of last year. They were: Alex Woodman, Dave DeRose, Ralph Paredes. and Dan Greene. All will return next year, along with Freshman sensation Scott Peakes. He was the fifth man on this year's team and will return with many others. 1 fi- 9x l L SJ U :Q nuts? 5' iii F X19 Rx AI, Ah'-Z., T, li I ik You Only Go Around Once In Life Look At All The Lonely People s f ,,.fm:1w-zavf'-w-Iv., .. , av-1L1:.'f: . usp -Lf ww -'lea-1:-Hi-'Sf-frff-.2 -.3-lic. f-ru?- -r'f.-1-i-.-an ww. 1 MESH -FF , . .'1f'.--R E' H-.zigfrgczz ,z.::g.. 1? - . The overall record of 4-5 was not that impressive but early injuries and inexperience contributed heavily to the poor statistics. Injuries to key performers Hansen. Seniors that will be missed are Jim Cusato llVlVPl, Kevin Hayes, Mike Kimes, Gary Nlachado, Steve Boitano, Tom Maloney. John Harris and Brad Mazzuca. The Bellarmine Junior Varsity Football team concluded their season with a record identical to the Varsity, 4-5. lt was a very topsy-turvy season for the Blue and White as they were never able to sustain a winning streak beyond one game. With each ensuing week the J.V.'s found it increasingly difficult to come up with the important playlsl that could possibly have salvaged a more respectable season standing. Under second year coaches, Larry Lauro and Tim Vatuone, the Bells opened league play by defeating the tough Riordan Squad 8 to 7. After a heart- breaking one point loss to S.l. the gridmen bounced back and destroyed St. Francis 28 to 6. The four touchdowns generated in that tilt were the most scored in any single game. Spearheading the offensive attack was junior quarterback Victor Romero, who proved himself continuously throughout the year. The backfield workhorses were Paul DiNapoli, Steve Mingrone. and Mark Sheehan. When Romero chose to go to the air, his favorite target was John Micheletti the recipient of many a pass during the year. On many occasions through, the Bells' offense completely broke down and this resulted in many low-scoring encounters and three shut-ot-outs. Anchoring the defense were linebackers Paul Casey, Mike Dahlin, and Mike Lazzeri. Often turning in fine performances were defensive backs Greg and Mark Sheehan, and Jim Caine. and Barney Van Alstyne. After winning 11 of 13 pre-season games and capturing the prestigious Lick tournament Championship, the Bells entered the W,C.A.L. League with high hopes. But their hopes were shattered as the Bells stumbled to a 2-10 league record. However, there were some bright spots for the first year coach Chris Dempsey. Senior Mike Grey played outstanding ball the entire season and made all-league. Seniors Bob Kay and Mike Pauley also played well. The team's pride centered around the fact of defeating the two C.C.S. finalists: Woodside and Riordan. But for the Bells to win in the future they will need good playing out of such Juniors as John Mahaney and Tim Schmidt. This. plus a more vocal student body will help the Bells achieve success in the future. will lin -'I 45 V., 5 -6.1, 9 1 1 5 ,gf ,fm S i 'fl' 4- 127' gig 3 Bell gunner scores over 'L .J W N -r 514 FL m L. .-r Li--N33 r db S A X44 v N14 .I fa. s ,Y Q, nr is ' p u f ne if V1 lllll J HII ll 'I i ,457 i ' v If xii QL? 241: -' ' W E Q '1- gm: 1 A . fFre'n----- H. Chip Chip Chip, - Chipmunk How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying was the title of the 1973 edition of the Bellarmine Musical. Poor student response marred a Bellarmine reputation for profitable musicals. Through a vigorous campaign of area radio advertising, intercom exhortations, prayers and a few acts of God, the musical managed to make a small comeback the second week. The show actually turned a S50 profit. Despite the bad luck. Ms. Diane Walsh made her debut as a director a success. Her imagination and the choreography of Alfred Gonzales and musical talent of Jeffra Kaufman combined for a complementary concoction of laughter and song. Doug Bedard played the role ofJ. Pierrepont Finch, the rising businessman who, through an assortment of luck, ethical and unethical deeds made a spectacular climb to the top of the World Wide Wicket Company. Bedard's singing voice is perhaps one of the finest in Bell musicals. Dave Zarka, another seasoned actor probably stole the show as Bud Frump, the spoiled nephew of the president of WWW. JB Bigley, played effectively by Mike Speakman, maintained running battles with Bud, his wife, and his sweetheart sexpot. Hedy Larue portrayed by Lisa Lindberg. Robert Sischka played Mr. Bratt. Mari Thomas filled the role of Rosemary, proving that good things do come in small packages. Space denies deserving compliments to all other players, but a glance down the program brings back memories. Waking from the slow of winter. Learning from experience. Unlike the sophomores, The juniors lost their innocence. The juniors finally blossomed, They had nothing to fear, Spring is like the juniors. So with affection in their hearts, he was labelled the Little Dictator. With a tinge of liberalism, the president's administration encouraged vocal factions of the student body to speak out on controversial topics. With the Cardinal. as its sounding board. ASB Officers ll started their journey towards a student government that does govern, The student council continued the truly powerful task of allocating student body funds earned through the mixers to needy student organizations. Speaker Forums were organized featuring biology teachers to city mayors. The ASB newsletter. an ASB office, and their bulletin board offered new outlets for communication. However, this year it unleashed itself with the sign of the times in the form of Student Unions. The controversial Black Student Union was granted S300 for their Black Culture Day. The Chicano Union sponsored the Cheech and Chong Look-alike Contest. The Nlafia, lMen's Assoc. for Italian Americansl raised money with a spaghetti feed. The BBLS continued under Mrs. Lundgard to save the library. Ii , A controversial Cardinal Article With the arrival of student unions and clubs, there arose several similarities of a less serious demeanor. These included the Red Headed League, the Polack Student Union, The Sons of Erin, and finally the Associated Students Union. The final one was for all kids who were unfortunately unqualified because of hair color, ethnic background to join other unions. With all things considered, clubs add to the basic student body attitude. Carillon Editors hope that they will be around long enough to put in next year's yearbook. l This is Howard Cosell The Entente 1-. 1 '-' vw x xl., A I FTQ54' 'N F5 -, Nw. V JS. Indivi- dual efforts were turned in by Senior Steve Martin, Tom Kane, Brad Raffanti, Mike Wiechers, Rich Dewey, Mark Barber, Steve Pope and Mike Adza. The group compiled the best record l21-Ol and the lowest-stroke average in the history of Bell golf. The team averaged only 76.6 strokes per round. so obviously ALL golfers were consistently contri- buting. ' 0 '1 l Radford serves. . . and Drocco returns. It Was A Very Good Year 'iz ' -a With the defeat of RLS in March, the Bellarmine Varsity Tennis team moved into one of its most successful seasons in recent years. Utilizing confidence and an amazing team balance, the team swung its way to a 12-4 record while losing only two league matches. The only losses were both avenged in the second round of play. The final league standings were determined by only one set and Bellarmine placed second. Charlie Drocco and Pat DeVoe went undefeated in league while J.F. Reilley solidified the team in the second round. Sophomore Scott Bedolla was the most valuable while Drocco captured the Block B Pin. Although ignored by the ineptitude of THE CARDINAL, they are most deserving of praise. One player called it, the no- name winning team. 9 , P N. H41 .rxjis Varsity Track ,Al +- iff! The months of grueling practice culminated in the best dual meet record in the history of Bellarmine, 11 wins and only one loss to Santa Clara. A second place finish in the WCAL and a 4th place finish in the highly competitive Central Coast Section also added to an impressive list of accomplishments. The senior contigent, spearheaded by Most Valuable Player, Greg Fiscalini, and Jim Fitzpatrick provided the proper inspiration for the team by their outstanding performances. Freshman standout Tom Nicolaysen and Sophomore Dick Grimes along with Fiscalini, Fitzpatrick, and Bernie Vogel all made All- American status this year, being the largest number of Bellarmine swimmers ever to achieve that goal. 4 All right gentlemen: Today We'll Do 7000 Yards AVS., .J 1J.,2., . Puts It All Together ln the beginning there Nation- als, and Nationals begat State, and State begat Dis- tricts. and Districts begat Debate. which begat Extemp, which begat Bellarmine which begat Individual Events which begat Student Congress, which begat Har- ville. and God rested on Friday at 12:35, and saw that all he had done was good. And all the multitudes on Bellarmine were happy, and all was bright and glorious. But Harville was led astray by the great Southern power ol darkness and ate of the fruit of the tree of hypo- thetical situations, and the great Western power of fear, so named Fremont was formed and took shape. But Harville repented to God for his sin against God's com- mand, and God seeing his torment promised to him a saviour to be wrapped in size 64 waist, 31 instep, and they called him Furniss, that is. the fat man in the ancient language of our fathers. And so it came to pass that the great year of doom arrived and Harville looked out from his seat on high, and as- cended to the sacred podium of sage sayings to address the multitudes before him. Hear ye all Extempers. Debators and other assorted peons. if we work, this year could be the best ever for us, and so might the great power of fear, so named Fremont in the ancient language of our fathers, be overcome. Thus spake Harv. And so it came to pass that none worked and Harville still persisted and through much trial and tribulation came to win eight sweep- stakes titles and qualify sixteen for State which was a new league record. And Fitz- simmons and Schirle finally qualified in Debate, and all the multitudes sang their praises and the praises of Harville and Furniss and all thatis good. But Harville was grave, and once again he ascended from on high to the sacred podium of sage sayings to address the dwindling multitudes: Hear Ye all State Qualifiers. if we work hard we can over- come the great blackness itself if we place down at State. so, verily we must continue to work hard fearing no evil. And so it came to pass that 11 virorked hard and Harville was much pleased, and Schirle and Fitz quartered in Debate, and Flay Wagstaffe, and Steve Schirle finalized and Doug Bedard won to become State Champion in Extemp, and Bellarmine overcame to place and destroy that which we name not but the great Souther Power of Darkness. But once again Harville ascended to the sacred podium of sage sayings with Furniss at his right hand to address the reinforced multi- tudes. If we work hard this summer ................ Seven Bellarmine speakers achieved the degree of double distinction. an award achieved by only one half of one percent of all high school speakers in the nation. The debate team of Schirle and Fitzsimmons took fifth place in the state. one of the best performances ever, by any Bellarmine Team. David Zarka missed qualifying for the nationai tournament by only one point in Dramatic Interpretation and Bob Marx barely missed qualifying for the final round at State. Didn't Make the team, but He may not be the first-string varsity baseball pitcher or even an all league basketball player. but the intramural fanatic in the second semester found new outlets for his unique athletic talents. Sgt.-at-Arms Dave DeRose added a new dimension to the program by emphasizing faculty participation. That additional dimension was the humor involved in watching the old guys attempt to play the games. The tournament-style basketball program, a faculty- student track meet, and finally the victory of the free-swinging Sunbums of the Softball diamond. all added to a successful program. While never failing to miss a deadline, the dedicated yearbook editors attempted in their own haphazard way, to restore Carillon credibility. Editor Jom Wagstaffe and his band of merry men tried to write a pictoral novel about a place called Bellarmine. Robbing from the rich. giving to the poor, they utilized photo essays, color, headlines and other assorted goodies.
