On September l3, I933 the San Jose News reported: The Bellarmine Dad's Club was or- ganized at Bellarmine College Preparatory last night with Frank D, Volpe of San Jose being elected president. . . The club was founded to organize those men who are interested in the maintenance and development of the school and make them more 'Bellarmine conscious '. For almost twenty-five years the Dad's Club has played an ever increasing, ever important role in Bellarmine's progress. Without their faith- ful assistance, sometimes in the face of great obstacles, the new school building, campus gar- dens, swimming pool, faculty building and a host of other improvements would have been impossible. In grateful appreciation, the faculty and students are happy to dedicate this l958 CARILLON to the Bellarmine Dad's Club. The annual Dod's and Son's day tr KKK . The Rev. F. Dillon, S.J. was appointed Vice-Superior under the Rev. Z, Maher, S.J., Presi- dent of the University, On March l9, l926 Fr. Dillon was appointed Superior and the University of Santa Clara High School became completely independent of the University of Santa Clara. During 1927 the Rev. James Hayes, S.J. was appointed Superior of the High School. ln March of l928 the name was changed to Bellarmine College Preparatory. ln l93l, after serving as Superior for one year, the late Rev. Lewis McCann, S.J. was appointed first Rector of Bellarmine. lt was through Fr. Mc- Cann's efforts that the first Mothers' Club was organized to aid in the rebuilding of the aged college campus. At this time several old buildings were removed to make way for future improve- ments. Through the progressive ideas and the foresight of Father McCann and his predecessors, the pres- ent Bellarmine was made a possibility, 01 Clltfornll. JIM!! At the same time a successful effort was made to improve academic standards through the cooperative efforts of the faculty and their new president, Rev. James Donahue, S.J. This period saw the beginning of actual construc- tion of new buildings. A Co-Op and Bookstore were added, along with a new Social Hall complete with recreational facilities for the ever increasing number of resident students. Even further demands on the limited classroom space necessitated splitting of the larger classrooms into smaller sized units. This made it possible to accom- modate even more students. The need for a new school building became daily more apparent. lgt?ll2ll'I1'lill6,b low Soviul Hall ladiclenffi Jfuclenfd Sofia riaed on Jife of off! mine prepar-nu v school auilitm-ium rm I onfmruafor - . . . . Under the rectorship of the Rev. Gerald A. Sugrue, SJ., Bellarmine underwent a series of phenomenal changes: the Junior-Senior class- room wing was constructed, the gymnasium was remodeled, Berchman's Hall was pur- chased and moved onto the campus, the swim- ming pool was completed by students and many generous members of the Dad's Club, the eucalyptus forest was removed, modern roads were constructed on the campus, lawns were planted to beautify the grounds, and the entire student enrollment greatly increased. Under the leadership ot Father Sugrue, both the Bellarmine Guild and the Bellarmine Dad's Club by their raffles, card parties, dinners, and subscription drives made possible this period of growth. During his term of office, a brand new ultra- modern faculty building was constructed to re- place the 80 year old relic which had previ- ously beer partially destroyed by fire. The long list of improvements includes the transfer of the students' chapel to the old school building, the acquisition of two new school buses, the furnishing ofa new student infirmary, and the purchase of Loyola Hall, an off-campus dorm for resident students, During this time, the Dad's Club and Bellar- mine Guild inaugurated the now famous social highlight ofthe year, The Golden Bell Dinner. Dullea, S.J. has shown great ability as an able rector and outstanding administrator. With only three years on the Bellarmine camp- us Father Dullea has seen the paying of the debt on the faculty building, has organized a retirement plan for the non-Jesuit faculty, con- structed three modern tennis courts, built new work shops and garages, and remodeled the interior of the resident students' dining hall. With the faithful cooperation of the Dad's Club and the Bellarmine Guild, Father Dullea has been an untiring and enthusiastic leader in promoting BeIlarmine's period of progress. alfll I'l'l0l'Yl EIU al LUOI' lllell U1 C0l'l5fl'll.Ctl0l'l 0 new gafage all IUOPL JAOIQJ eu. From the very beginning Bellarmlne was always a boys boarding school and for many years Kostka Hall was more than adequate Later additional space was re quired and September of l95O witnessed the puchase of an addntlonal building to provide badly needed space for Junior boarders Located at 941 Heddlng Street the hall replaced another less satisfactory residence situated a block and a half west of the campus on Emory Street Immediately the newly acquired Loyola Hall was put into use and It now houses 40 Junior boarders a group noted for nts fine spirit and con sidered the bright light of the boarding sec tion during the l957 58 year The removal last August of the old fac ulty building took away the site of last year s Social Hall used exclusively by Jun uors Now the club room overlooking the swimming pool serves as their recreation area and under the direction of Junior prefects Mr Charles Van Dorn and Mr William Donnelly is the scene of frequent pmgpong tourneys pool contests and weekend parties With existing boarding facilities strained to the limits, the year l'-746 was Bellarmine's first attempt to pro- vide additional space. Then a seventeen room mansion was purchased and moved from the corner of Stockton and Polhemus to the northwest corner of the Bellar- mine campus. Local papers featured pictures of an eleven-year-old boy operating the winch which controlled the cables that moved the building into position. One end of the building was remodelled into a chapel where Senior and Junior boarders attended daily Mass until l955 when it was converted into a private study room Berchman s now houses 38 Seniors and is easily the most comfortable hall on campus containing as it does living quarters study room and social und ne oof is also short distance from the chapel and students dining room Mr Carlton Whitten and Mr William Nolan pre fects are in charge of the hall Spooner Pauly and Sebastian: discuss world affairs? These words of Christ seemed to provide the needed incentive for this group during the year, as they surpassed all past efforts of such a com- mittee. Much of the credit is due to Mr. Henry Mellon, moderator. The nucleus of their activities was the Christ- mas food drive, This year, with the aid ofthe students, before Christmas vacation, the group gathered together over 200 boxes of groceries for the needy families of the San .lose area. During Lent, the committee set about col- lecting money for the over-seas missions. This year's goal of S2000 was surpassed generous- ly. The contributions of the student body were forwarded to many parts of the Catholic Mis- sion world. The remainder of the year was taken up with plans for next year's Christmas and Len- ten campaigns. Moderator Mr. Thomas Conn explains Holy Week changes to Terry Rod- HIGH. When Father John Nobili, S.J., founded Santa Clara in 1851, he immediately began to teach the Indian boys the manner of serving at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. They were the original mem- bers of what is known at Bellarmine today as the St. John Berchman's Sanctuary Society. Composed entirely of boarders the group serves all Masses offered each day by our own 15 priests in either the students' or faculty Chapels. ln addi- tion they serve at Benediction, held each Sunday evening after study hall, and on special occasions such as the annual Mass of the Holy Ghost and First Fridays. Under their moderator, Mr. Thomas Conn, the society has an extensive program 'of probation which all aspirants must undertake before they formally receive the surplice making them official members of the group. At the present time more than 40 Freshmen are being trained in this pro- gram, with 6O others already active in the organi- zation. anc ociefg proved jaifA!u! Edward M. Pettid Moderator Even while on the Santa Clara Campus, the Thomas l. Bergin Debate Society was active. After moving to the old C.O.P. campus, debating was perhaps the most active of organizations. Over the years debating con- tinued in spurts and starts. Finally, in 1950, the Bellar- mine Chapter of the NFL was founded. With such moderators as Mr. Robert St. Clair, S.J., Mr. Carlo Weber, SJ., Mr. Arthur Connelly, S.J., and Rev. Edward Pettid, and with such names as Sheehy, Solomon, Durard and Jimenez, the past is studded with outstanding achievements. Not to be outdone, the present l958 Bellarmine Chapter of the NFL can be accurately termed as a year of steady development and progress. Lambert Spronck earned fourth place in the Amer- ican Legion State Finals. In addition, William Gagen earned a berth on the NFL squad leaving for the State Finals. At the same tournament the team of Vincent Mirrione and Lambert Spronck also qualified in the field of debate. And yet despite these triumphs the NFL has yet to reach the apex of its potential. Almost all of its out- standing speakers will be returning next year. i958 has been the year of progress, 1959 should prove to be the year of victory. And furthermore . . In time, those earning var- sity blocks in any sport were organized into an athletic society, the Block B, under the Rev. Alex- ander Cody, SJ. Today the organization has about 60 members with over half of them in the exclusive organiza- tion called the Shield Society. Organized in 1956 by Father Robert Plushkell,S.J.,this exclusive group requires that each member maintain a C average and participate in some other extraecurricular ac- tivity. Moderator, Father Joseph Costa, was substan- tially responsible for this year's successful Block B dance. Leaver, Kier- Early track days at Bellarmine consisted of an occasional fast track-man popping up from no- where and setting some new. unheard-of school record. That is what the great Eric Pedley and Bernie Hoffman did back in l948. These two were not part of any track team, but worked out two or three times a week entirely on their own. Even earlier, l943, a futile attempt was made to institute track. Like previous attempts, it too soon failed. Only during the last three years, under its true founder, Mr. Edward Callanan, S..l., has the Bellarmine track team functioned properly. Real progress has been made, though, with the Bellarmine cindermen placing second in the San Jose City Meet last year, and with Denny Valen- tine running in the State Finals. ln addition, all past school records have been broken by team stalwarts Boyle, O'Kane and Bo- dine. Marshall Leaver holds the record in the pole vault. This year, under the coaching of Fr. James Dev- lin and Mr. James Mahoney, the i958 track team has high hopes for success in seven or eight of their ten dual meets. The first College Park cross-country team donned the Blue and White in the autumn of 1954. Since then it has been molded into an outstanding squad of long range speed- sters. Under the direction of Fr. James Devlin the unsung Bell sprinters have compiled an enviable record. Though- the Asiatic flu ran rampant and Denny Boyle, one of the team s swiftest runners was plagued with an iniured foot, still the 1958 cross-country team emerged triumphant in several bitterly-contested meets. Neil Bodine, team captain, placed fourth in the annual division finals. The original courts, removed in l944, were located behind the old faculty building, where the freshmen and sophomore wings are presently being constructed. These were donated by the Mother's Guild. ln 1956, three new courts were installed to allow the netmen to practice on the Bell campus. Although there are no returning lettermen, this year's team, moderated by Rev. Edward Pettid, is capably led by upperclassmen John Kiely, Csimma, and Horwitz. Soon after moving the few miles to San Jose, the organi- zation died, chiefly because they lacked all the facilities of a swimming pool. Father Gerald Sugrue, Rector of Bellarmine, successfully obtained the services of the Bellarmine Dad's Club and a pool was constructed adioining the gym in l945. One year later under the direction of the then Mr. Neil Herrlick, S.J., an official swim team returned to the Bellarmine campus. That first team, consisting of seven members, en- ioyed an excellent season losing only two meets. Since then, it has grown to the powerful 21 member squad now upholding the reputation of the first team. The '58 varsity is headed by last year's All-Americans Ross Berry and Jim Schwartz.
