We thought that we could use this space to tell you about all the hard work we have done, the long hours that were spent in mounting pic- tures, typing copy, or getting advertisements. Or we could tell you of the fun we had at our banquet, or the day we took club pictures. Or we could use this space to express our hopes that you will enioy this 1955 Beliuan as much as we have enioyed publishing it. lAnd we do hope you enioy it.l But we decided it would be best to use it to thank all who have contributed in any way to help us publish this yearbook. Coach Reyman 'Bud' Bonar's charges got by Moundsville only 20-18 but hit their stride the next week when they humbled Linsly Institute, a Troian conquer, 45-14. East Liverpool fell 28-7, and at New Philadelphia the Big Reds blasted the Quakers, 26-0, Philly had previously sutifered only one loss that to Martins Ferrv and by a single point 14-13. With a backfield of passer, ballhandler and signal-caller Jerry Bell, fleet Andy 'Dusty' Destifanes, Bob Bostansic, and blockbusting Jim Nemec operating behind a hard-hitting line, the Red humbled Wheeling Central and then bumped their two arch rivals, Wheeling High K6-O1 and Martins Ferry C32-135. Evi- dently, having read of the highly publicized Mr. lnside and Mr, Outside , the Big Reds were fired to the point of making them appear as Mr. Upside and Mr, Downside . With Bell directing the attack and alternat- ing Nemec, Bostancic, and Destifanes co-ball carriers, there was no way for Philly to stop the Big Reds. Up front there was great blocking and on defense time and time again the Philly backs were surprised by these linemen upsetting them before they could get started. Nemec scored twice, Bostancic and Desti- fanes one each with Farmer kicking two extra points. Dusty tears thru Linsly Bellaire 6 - Wheeling 0 As always Wheeling High was a great hurdle for the Bellaire team but having come through the previous contests the whole squad was determined that nothing would stand in the way of another O. V. C. Championship. Again the boys behind the line demon- strated their ability to either bull or sidestep their way to pay dirt. Once was enough to tame the Wildcats and bring Bellaire within one game of the O. V. C. Had not those boys up front presented such a defensive stone wall, things would have been a lot different. The Bellaire team played as great teams always play with not one or two but all being stars in this game. Bostancic made the only score of the game. fContinued on page 96? ' Guernsey Street B9 BASKETBALL REVIEW Bellaire 72 Toronto 56 The Big Reds traveled up the river to Tor- onto for their first game and they couldn't have started the season any better as they beat the Toronto Knights 72-56. All of those who played gave a good account of themselves. This game indicated that the Big Reds were on their way to a successful season. Bellaire 101 Moundsville 63 After losing their second game to Barnes- ville 61-59 the Big Reds bounced back into the victory column with vengeance as they hit the century for the first time in three years by defeat- ing Moundsville 101-63. Seeking revenge over last year's loss to the Trojans which was the first defeat on the home floor since 1951, the Big Reds really triumphed as everyone on the squad joined in scoring. Potts' foul shots boosted the score to 100 and 101. Bellaire 67 Shadyside 62 For the second time this season the Sha- deans bowed to the Big Reds. The main factor in this victory was the sharp shooting of Lee Patrone and the rebounding of the other start- ing players. It was a hard fought game and the Shadeans showed that they deserved the O. V. C. A Championship which they went on to win later. Bellaire 72 Martins Ferry 65 lt was a great game in which the score was tied thirteen times, but with the shooting of Lee Patrone coupled with the great floor play of Murray Shackleford and successful rebounding from Joe Greenwood, Jim Nemec, John Wilkes, Louis Keitz, Mike Ingram, and Francis Gibson the Big Reds finally subdued their arch rival 72-65. This was a big victory for the Big Reds because it was the first time that a Bellaire team had beat Ferry on their home court since 1938. Bellaire 82 Wheeling 72 After avenging an earlier loss to Barnes- ville the Big Reds snapped the 18 game winning streak of the Wheeling Wildcats in what many people called the game of the year. There were 1700 screaming fans on hand to see the battling Big Reds come from behind in the third quarter to stay ahead the rest of the game. It was the shooting of Lee Patrone and Big Jim Nemec coupled with rebounding of Joe Green- wood and John Wilkes and the great fioor play of Murray Shackleford that enabled the Big Reds to beat the powerful Wildcats. TOURNAMENT GAMES Bellaire 86 St. Johns 68 The Big Reds started off in tournament play in fine form as they downed their Guernsey Street rival, St. John's 86-68. Nine players ioined in the scoring column but the high honors went to Lee Patrone who broke the floor record by tossing in 37 points. Bellaire 88 Bridgeport 76 Bellaire gained revenge over last year's tournament loss to the Bridgets as they defeated them 88-76. This was the first Bellaire team in three years to survive the sectional and go on to the district. It was a hard fought game all the way but the Bridgets fell back during the third quarter never to surge to the front. Bellaire 77 Zanesville 91 Bellaire's 14 game winning streak was snapped as they were downed by Zanesville 91-77. The Big Reds fought hard all the way. The following seniors played their last game for Bellaire High: Joe Greenwood, Don Landers, Jim Nemec, Dick Nowak, Marty Potts, and Murray Shackleford. THE UNITED DAIRY, Wheeling, W. Va. The meet brought teams from Western Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. Bellaire's mile relay team, composed of Dick Cope, Bill Benes, Don Bronchik, and Ray Jeffers brought home a fourth place medal. Bill Benes also placed fourth in the broad jump. Bellaire placed eighth in the Wheeling lnvi- tational Meet. There were approximately 20 teams in the meet which was held at Wheeling. A newly organized meet, the Belmont Re- lays, was held at Bellaire. Bellaire took third place. This meet served as a warm-up for the Ohio Valley Championship which was held the following week. The O. V. C. meet showed the potentialities of the steadily-improving Big Reds. Two records were set in the meet. One of the records was credited to Bellaire's two mile relay team of Don Bronchik, Rich Sklenar, Joe Gacek, and Ray Jef- fers. The two mile relay was being contested on the conference card for the first time and the Bellaire four were clocked in the excellent time of 8 min. 42.6 sec. SE IUH TRACE LETTEHME Bellaire took another third place in the Ferry Relays. The two mile relay team again broke a record. The team then went to the Muskingum Re- lays which were held at Muskingum College. This meet attracted teams from Bellaire to Cleve- land. There were approximately 30 teams and the competition was pretty rough. Bellaire took 'l5ll'1 place. Then came the meet that decided who would qualify to run in the state track meet. This meet was held at Uhrechsville and was attended by all teams in a designated district. Bellaire again copped third place, and qualified in the mile relay-Bronchik, Sklenar, Miller, and Benes, Ronny Hill in the pole vault, Bill Benes in the 440, and Ray Jeffers in the 880. Jeffers placed seventh in the competition in the state meet at Columbus. Bellaire's Freshman team were Ohio Valley Champions and went without defeat throughout the season. The Big Red Freshman team won the meets that were held in both Martins Ferry and Bellaire. DR. R. M. CALDWELL, Bellaire District Track meet at Uhrichsville. B SEB LL SEASU 1954 Bellaire vs. St. Clairsville The Bellaire Big Reds opened their highly successful baseball season by trouncing St. Clairsville 8 to l. The day was very cold but not enough so to silence the Big Red Bats. Bill Miller, Bob Bostancic, Ray Slotwinski, and John Bruce led the attack with two hits apiece. Slot- winski also turned in a fine pitching perform- ance, giving up only 3 hits. Bellaire vs. Bridgeport After downing Shadyside 6 to 3 the Big Reds were stopped by a good Bulldog team 4 to 2 for our only regular season loss. Bridge- port garnered only 2 hits to our seven but still came out on top. Bellaire vs. Warren Consolidated This was truly a great day for the Big Red Nine and Ray Slotwinski. We defeated W. C., perennial O.V.C. Champs, l to 0 on Slotwin- ski's masterful four hitter. Hrdlicka scored the only run of the ball game on Helms' single. Bellaire vs. Martins Ferry The Big Reds stopped arch-rival, Martins Ferry, in a very strange way for victory number seven. With the score tied 6 to 6 in the last of the seventh the ball became lodged in the back- stop. Due to ground rules this enabled the run- ner on 3rd base to walk home with the winning run. The Big Reds also routed Ferry 8 to 5. Bellaire vs. St. Johns This was another tight squeeze for the Big Reds but they came out on top 3 to 2 in the battle of the Guernsey Street schools. Don Camsky turned in a brilliant mound perform- ance, giving up only one hit. TOURNAMENT The All-American Towners prepped for the tournaments by defeating Barnesville 7 to 2, Powhatan 18 to 0, and Yorkville 4 to 0. In the tournaments the Bellaire Nine met a revengeful Warren Consolidated club. The Big Reds put up a good battle but were severely hampered by the loss of four regulars to a local semi-pro team. Even though we lost 6 to 2 this was still one of the most highly successful base- ball seasons in many years, as we closed with eight wins and two losses. FOOTBALL lcont.D Bellaire 32-Ferry I3 Bellaire the coveted O. V. C. Champs! lt was all over now but the shouting and as we now know the shouting went on until the wee hours of the morning. The prediction made by one of Ferry's own scribes of September first that Bellaire had great prospects for a successful season, came true when our team defeated Ferry. Engaging in their last high school game were twenty seniors: Ends-Farmer, Green- wood, Lopeman and Nowak, Tackles-Farnario, Ault, Fry, Jeffers and Peck, Guards--Clark, Wil- liamson and Potts, Center-Piatt, Quarterback- Bell, Halfbacks-Bostancic, Fisher, Buti and Weber, Fullbacks-Nemec and Tedeschi.
