Where not so long ago Indians had lived, the early settlers laid the foun- dation for a town that was destined to play an impor- tant part in the history of Ohio. By 1832 Belle Aire las it was originally calledl was a shipping center. It built railroads and made plans for highways. Her industries began to grow, and although a decline of the same caused a similar decline in population, Bellaire is still the second largest city in Belmont County. In Bellaire you will still find iron foundries, enamel works, glass houses, and the Bell Telephone Co. to mention a few. Although the first school was not built until 1839, education has f1ourished, and today Bellaire High School is one of the main points of interest in our city. Recreation is not overlooked either! This is proved by our four playgrounds and the swimming pool. Last, but certainly not least, is the athletic de- partment of our school, which has for many years turned out great athletes and fine sportsmen. All in all we can be sure that it is cities such as ours that form the backbone of a great nation. Bel- laire has earned, and is proud of the nickname The All-American Town! 1 Us ill WH 2 3 . We to whom the responsibility of the Beliuan has been en- trusted have tried to make it a credit to Bellaire High School and the Class of 1953, and an everlasting reminder of high school days. Our thanks go to our friends, the business and professional men of this area, for supporting our Beliuan. Without their help this yearbook would have been impossible. The students of B.H.S. should show their appreciation in turn by supporting these merchants in their enterprises. This year Miss Smith, our able advisor, has started a new system by which underclassmen, as well as seniors take part in the production of the Beliuan. Thus, when next year's seniors take over this main responsibility of the yearbook, they will be better equipped. We, the departing seniors of the staff, wish them the best of luck. THE BELMONT FEDERAL SAVINGS 8. The member- ship ofthe club total 250 girls, representing all four high school classes. Since the group is very large, the success ofthe club depends on the co-operation that each individual shows. The Y-Teen are primarily concerned with building a well- rounded personality: mentally, physically, socially, and spiritually. During the school year meetings and activities are planned to carry out the purpose and ideals of a Christian organization. The Y-Teen Club is an affiliated member of the YWCA and is sponsored by the Bellaire Town Unit. A fourteen member cabinet and the club advisors make up the executive body of the club. ln the cabinet meetings club meetings are planned and laws are made which govern the club. Alpha Hi-Y One of the most active clubs in Bellaire High School is the Alpha Hi-Y which is made up of iunior and senior boys under the guidance of Mr. Blind. The Hi-Y is a part of the National Y. M. C. A. and each year our club sends its president and vice president for a training period to Camp Nelson Dodd. We are very proud that this year we paid off the debt for fixing the town clock. Also in cooperation with the Beta Hi-Y we had a successful drive to collect clothing for Korea. On the social side were the Hi-Y-Y-Teen Formal in November, a basketball team, and swimming parties. The officers for the year are Robert Wehe, president, Charles Fry, vice-presi- dent, James Fornia, secretary, Robert Murray, treasurer, and Ralph Mooney, chaplain. Beta Hi-Y The Beta Hi-Y has enjoyed its most successful season this year. We have had the largest membership in our history. The freshmen have responded mag- niticently to the call of the Hi-Y movement. We were fortunate enough to have been able to send a delegation of five sophomore members to Camp Russell lo- cated at Oglebay Park this fall and our president Dale Clark to Camp Nelson Dodd located near Mount Vernon, Ohio. Our Induction Ceremony this year was most impressive. We were especially honored by parents of the members and by our superintendent, Mr. F. N. Reinbolt. We also sold First and Ten Magazines , sold candy and pop at the Home- coming Dance and helped decorate the gym for the Hi-Y-Y-Teen Formal. Our latest campaign, at this writing, was our Clothes For Korea Drive in which we co-operated with the Alpha Hi-Y. This drive was for gathering clothes for people of South Korea. The Quakers scored first, but the Big Reds bounced back with a touchdown by Mooney from the eight-yard line. Other touchdowns were made by Nemec, Lancione, Sickles, Greenwood, and two by Pie- howicz. BELLAIRE 28 - TRIADELPHIA 7 The Big Reds came from behind again to check Triadelphia 28-7. All-stater John Pie- howicz snagged two touchdown passes thrown to Bill Bostancic and Herb Sickles. Other touch- downs were made by Mooney and Nemec. Sickles made all of the extra points--4. BELLAIRE 4'I -- GARFIELD HEIGHTS 12 The Big Reds made it three in a row on their first road trip. Bellaire had it easy with six touch- downs, a safety, and three extra points to Gar- field's two touchdowns. Ralph Mooney made two touchdown runs of 30 and 42 yards. Joe Ault snagged two passes for touchdowns, and Pieho- wicz and Nemec finished the touchdown parade. Sickles made 3 extra points. BELLAIRE 75 - MOUNDSVILLE I4 Bellaire made it four in a row as they sank the Troians 75-14. Nine players got into the scoring which included eleven touchdowns and nine extra points. Scoring honors went to Ralph Mooney who scored three times, Bell to Tuttle passes accounted for two more. McKeever tal- lied twice, and single touchdowns were made by Nick Trolley, Bill Bostancic, Bob Bostancic and Jim Nemec. Sickles made eight extra points. This seventy-five point game was the second highest tally ever made in Big Red history. BELLAIRE 20 - LINSLY 0 It was Fathers' Day at the Big Red Stadium and the players didn't let them down. John Pie- howicz caught all three touchdown tosses, two thrown by Co-Captain Bill Bostancic and one by Herb Sickles. This victory was credited to our defensive team which was largely made up of ends, Piehowicz and Ault, tackles, Fry and Far- nario, line backers, Conforti and Nemec. This was a hard fought victory and we earned it. Ex- tra points, Sickles 2. BELLAIRE I3 - YOUNGSTOWN NORTH I9 Bellaire went to their first defeat of the sea- son before a large shirt-sleeve crowd. This was perhaps the hardest fought game of the season. Piehowicz and Bill Bostancic scored our touch- downs, Sickles, the extra point. BELLAIRE 'I9 - NEW PHILADELPHIA 26 The Big Reds still dazed by their first defeat came out of it in the second half, but it was too late as Bellaire went down to her second defeat. Bellaire touchdowns were made by Bill Bostancic and two by John Piehowicz. All three passes were thrown by Jerry Bell. BELLAIRE 33 - IRONTON 20 After trailing by thirteen points in the first quarter, Bellaire bounced back to tie the game up in the first half and go on to win 33-20 in the second half. Bob Bostancic scored the first touch- down and his brother Bill scored the second a few minutes later. Don Marn scored twice by passes from Sickles and Bell. Nemec scored the last touchdown. BELLAIRE 6 - WHEELING 40 Well at least we played a good first half, though in the last half the field opened up and swallowed us or it seemed that way. Mooney scored our first and last touchdown and the score was tied 6-6 at half time. The second half is not to be mentioned. BELLAIRE 7 - FERRY 7 There were thirteen seniors who played their last game for the Big Reds. They are ends- John Piehowic, Joe Ault, Joe Campbell, Don Marn and Lowell Tuttle, tackles-co-captain Dave Schramm, Charles Fry, guard- Windy Strahl, center-Jerry Conforti, backs-co-captain Bill Bostancic, Herb Sickles, Ralph Mooney, and John Lancione. This was a very hard fought game and could have gone either way. Bellaire's only score came from a Sickles to Piehowicz pass. The boys will remember this game for a long time. FOOD CENTER, MIKE DE BLASS, BELLAIRE, OHIO 82 Coach Claire Cribbs Don Coyne Clyde Hochstrasser Fred Siedel John Piehowicz Joe Campbell Charles Gratz Herbert Sickles The 52-53 Big Red basketball team was the greatest combination of hoopsters ever to repre- sent Bellaire High on the hardwood, and with an eye to the future, we can see many more great teams in the making. Newcomers to the team are immediately im- pressed by the tall, imposing coach with the deep, resonant voice. It isn't long until the fellows learn to respect the commands issued by that voice or to respond with enthusiasm to its warmth and urgency. Coach Claire Cribbs endears himself quickly to his team. His ambition, diligence, de- pendability and consideration for his boys' inter- ests bind him to his team. In addition to helping each boy be a more effective player, Coach Cribbs also serves as an advisor and second father to any boy who is troubled with a problem. The boys who play the game, the students who cheer, and the fans who support the team are thankful for Coach Cribbs and his introduc- tion of big-time basketball to Bellaire High School. The only defeat suffered by the Big Reds was a 67-62 loss to Martins Ferry when the boys were over confident after they had laced Ferry 77-52. There was no doubt that Bellaire was the class of the district, any team that could beat the Big Reds was very lucky, indeed. Perhaps the best game the team played was an 84-7'l triumph over Union which gave Union her only defeat of the season. Leading the brilliant brigade was Captain Don Nemo Coyne. Don was deadly from anywhere and his pet shot was a jumping left- handed push shot from the left corner. As a iunior, Don established a new Bellaire High mark for total points in one season, and as a Senior he pumped in 44 in a single game which also is a record. Fred Siedel will always be remembered for his twisting iump shot from the pivot. Freddie rebounded with the best of them and his faking made more than one opponent loaded with fouls. fContinued on page 933 A. G. FOOD CENTER, FRIZZI 8. THE BELMONT CASKET MANUFACTURING CO., SHADYSIDE, OHIO High-Lights of the Basket-Ball Season After the Big Reds had smothered the first four opponents of the season, they hadn't re- ceived the acid test as yet, said the experts. Well, the Red and Black came up against Martins Ferry and Ferry went down hard from a tremendous wallop administered by the Big Reds, 77-52. We had waited a long time to see Ferry really get pasted from a Big Red team, and it was sweet. Bellaire took a trip to Moundsville to face the Trojans, and it turned out to be quite a battle until the Troians just couldn't keep up the cham- pionship pace, and our team walked away in the last quarter to win the game. The game that sent thrills down the backs of the ardent followers was played against the Bridgeport Bulldogs in their crackerbox gym. The Bulldogs evidently didn't care about records, and we really had a tussle. lt takes a real cham- pion to keep cool, as the Big Reds did, and pull the game out of the fire. Probably the most important win of the year was over Union, which gave that powerful team its only loss. There wasn't a doubt as to the strongest team, as we led all the way for an 84- lContinued from page 831 John Piehowicz was a handy guy to have on the team, for he could play any position. Chimpy was a bulwark in the team as a rebound- er and shotmaker. He and Hochstrasser battled all year for a guard position and divided the chores about equally. The guy who got in the game and really went all out to win was Joe Campbell. At all times Jo Jo played for blood and would really go into a scramble for a loose ball, head first. Herbie Sickles was a dead shot from long 71 victory. When it came St. Clairsville's turn to face their fate, nobody expected the high-scoring Reds to amass 109 points to drown the Red Devils and establish a school record. Wheeling, with its two 6' 5 giants, couldn't stop the Big Reds as we defeated them for the second-straight year, this time it was a 92-73 win. We'll attempt to make no excuses for the one blotch on our record, Martins Ferry, but take a look at the tournament scores. These are the real thrillers and important games of the regular season, although we will have to give the Linsly Cadets credit for the game they gave us. Our tremendous strength was hard for some to believe, but when a team averages over twenty points per game more than the opponent, one can see that such a team is the kind found only in a coach's dream, and this was the team of Bellaire High School, Clair Cribb's 1952-1953, record-setti ng, d rea m team. range, and many times he would swish the ball through when the opposition had the inside iammed up. Charley Gratz alternated with Seidel at cen- ter. Charley could really stretch his long 6'4 frame into the stratosphere to take the ball as soon as it came off the board. When Charley racked up the 100th point on a foul shot in the St. C. game, the crowd went wild. This was his big moment for he is the first Big Red ever to send the tally board over 100.
