Our track team swept honors on the valley and district cinders. In football we achieved our first un- beaten season since 1926 and won the Ohio Val- ley Conference Big 10 title. After the football season was over, with 8- wins, one tie and with the Ohio Valley Confer- ence trophy on display in the first floor display case, the time came for the All-State selections. T959 'E 725 149 Bellaire 'I3-Shadyside 0 ln our opening game Bellaire met a strong Orange and Black. The first quarter was a see-saw affair. But early in the second quarter we came to life. Don Brinker, behind good down field blocking, ran 95 yards for a TD. Then in the 3rd frame a pass from Church to Secrest was good for a TD. Secrest then converted for the extra point. Bellaire I2-Triadelphia 6 Although we entered the game as the underdog a mighty Bellaire eleven broke Triadelphia's 26 game winning streak. Behind good blocking and tackling, Captain Johnny Pozzini averaged 8.2 yards per carry. Johnny Pozzini scored the first TD. Triadelphia then made the score 7-6. But Don Brinker drove over for the final score. Secrest failed to convert. Bellaire 'I9-Linsly 7 It was run and block all day as Bellaire downed Linsly, with Jim Tekeley running 49 yards for the first TD. Fighting and plunging their way over for the other two TD's were Pozzini and Brinker. Secrest making the extra point. Bellaire 41-Moundsville 25 A mighty eleven of Bellaire stormed through Moundsville's line. With the game still young Tekeley ran the first TD over for us. Bellaire played all the boys on the squad, still our scores came from passes from Church to Rieves, or Ripoly. While Don Brinker intercepted a pass and ran for a TD. Rough and ready Pozzini scored two TD's. Secrest kicked fine extra points. After our club was organized we divided it up into basketball teams coached and refereed by reserve and Freshmen players. ln the future we are going to try to improve our club and do something to help the school. Our club was mainly started through the help of Mr. Bovenizer, for he had to send away to get information on the club before anything could be done. All the members would like to thank him for his help. Hnnmal, 5Cl:Ql'l,C.Q, The General Science Club meets every other Wednesday. During the meet- ings we discuss problems and do experiments. They pick a topic, write a speech about it, and then the coach , Miss Darby, picks the best four to broadcast over WWVA. Then those four spend some time in preparing their broadcast. This club is open to all students interested in this type of work. The topic this year was Can the United Nations Organization Be More of an lnfluence in Establishing a Peaceful World? nmmtmclhl Klub The purpose of our Commercial Club is to broaden our views on different subjects, attain more skills, help us choose our particular vocation, and to have fun while doing it. Any Junior or Senior enrolled in the Commercial Course is eligible for mem- bership. This year the Commercial Club has the largest membership ever achieved here, with about 50 enrolled at our first September meeting. Our meetings are held every other Wednesday, alternating with the other clubs. Besides practical skills, we have dinners and club visits, also skits put on by the members. We had a Christmas Dinner, which was well attended. We have visited The Buckeye Savings and Loan and will also visit the Imperial Glass Corporation and Elliott's School of Business. All of our meetings and visits are arranged and planned hy club members. Miss Clara Mehlmann is our very worthy advisor. Our officers include: Nelda Butler, president, Rose Ellen Cook, vice-president, Shirley Miller, secretary, Jo Ann Long, Treasurer, Sally Addison, Publicity, and Phyllis Brewer, Program Chairman. jcofmcafwl 512114 Scorecard? ! Around 1,000 scorecards were distributed among the girls. Rain or shine they sold programs. At least two girls sold during the first quarter. Each girl was also working to sell the most. This year Nelda Butler was high salesman. Profits for the season were used by the Hi-Y to finance various products. Miss Eby and Mr. Blind advised us and did a good iob, we think. 63 Helm, gm The biology club meets every two weeks on Wednesday after school. We have seen experiments in the Chemistry Laboratory and different biological speci- mens, both visual and microscopic. We have discussed the dissecting of animals. We also considered making a scrap book which would contain paintings and collections by the members. The club consists of about twenty-five members. All must have an average of B or above in Biology. The picture of our club members is not complete as some were added or lost due to gain or loss of the B average. Membership is onthe six week period basis. The officers of the club are as follows: President ..,, , .... ..,. . , ,. . . Jean Stewart Vice President . .. . Maureen Closser Secretary . , , .... Tommy Decker Home The girls are learning how to take care of sickness at home, using such materials as are usually available in the average household. The girls learn to make a bed with the patient in it-no easy task for a beginner. They learn to give bed-baths, take temperatures, diagnose common ailments, dress wounds, improvise splints, etc. The girls take turns being patients . Life-size doll babies are used in teaching infant care including bathing and changing . Later the girls hope to induce their younger brothers or sisters to be models at home practice sessions. Enya' frwluhq, Klub Miss Eby started the club this fall to teach boys cooking-for in some of our big cities men are the best chefs. First thing we did was to copy recipes of Plum Puddings, Pies, Cakes, lcing, Macaroni, Spaghetti and Cheese Sauce, Candies, Cookies, Pastries of all kinds, Doughnuts, etc. The club meets every Wednesday after school. The Junior Red Cross group in Bellaire High School is a link which helps to bind to- gether many other such organizations throughout the world. The purpose of this organization is service to others. We serve the community in which we live, the nation, and other countries. The scope of Junior Red Cross activities is very wide . . . we help to train students to be of greater service to the world as they grow older. When one belongs to the Junior Red Cross he realizes the importance of helping others and no longer thinks only of himself. In Bellaire High School this year we had a fine response to the Junior Red Cross membership drive. Each student, by joining the JRC, has shown that he is very interested in making a better world. The officers ofthe JRC council of Bellaire High School are Leah Pearl Lando, chairman, Nancy Jo McFall, vice chairman, and Sue Robinson, secretary. Uma gm Jwfwt :L 5 . Office girls in both the principal's and superintendent's offices get a lot of practice in actual office procedure. They are girls chosen from the upper half ofthe Commercial Class. They must be trustworthy, eager to learn, and ambitious. Their duties include filing, answering the phone, some dictation and letter writing, help in giving readmission slips, tardy slips, library permits and many other duties in actual office work. The girls in the principal's office are under the supervision of Miss Mehlman, those in the superintendent's office are guided by Miss Baker. The girls, particularly in Mr. Polinsky's office, have the authority to get stu- dents trom classes at the discretion of their superiors. Teachers secretaries really get actual secretarial training. These girls work for athletic directors, coaches, band directors, etc. They take dictation, write and mail letters, make phone calls, and many other worthwhile business-training tasks to prepare thern for work after graduation. fp. J.. J. gm The Public Address Technicians Club organized last fall and elected the fol- lowing officers: President, James Reynolds, Vice President, Cloyd Davis, Secretary, William Skapik, Treasurer, Frank Robinson. After elections the permanent sched- ule was made out for the year. This year the P. A. T. Club, with the student coun- cil, sponsored the noon movies. The members of the P. A. T. Club will receive letters again this year for their services rendered to the school. Frank Robinson, Cloyd Davis, and Bill Skapik are in charge of the morning and afternoon announcements while Don Bennington, Bill Craig, Paul Toxie, Paul DePaulis, Jim Reyolds, Jack Trigg, Bob Campbell, Bob Coss, and George Johnston take care of special announcements during the period to which they are assigned. 67 jim. effclfzafuye 915214, The work of the library girl is somewhat varied. There is much more work to be done than most people realize. She must check out books if the librarian is not there, she must file books, magazines, and put the magazines in their proper files when the new ones come in. The new ones are then placed in the folders. The library girl must also type the numbers and names on the book pocket, after that, the pocket must be glued in the book. After the books are returned, they must be carded and placed in their proper places. Sometimes, the girl is asked to mail out the checks in payment of the invoices. Last, but not least, the cards must be delivered to the home rooms, where the teachers give them back to the students. Every week the banking girls take the grade school students' money and count it and deposit it in the school bank. After they have 52.00 in the school account, then they can transfer it to one of the local banks. ln trans- ferring the students' money to one of the local banks, the pupil's name and the amount of money for each pupil must be typed on separate sheets for each bank. The student council got off with a bang with one of the most heated elections that was ever staged in Bellaire High School. The candidates were divided into three parties, Federalists, Na- tionalists and Constitutionalists. There was a political convention where all parties were given fifteen minutes for speeches. The highlights of the assembly were Dobson's iovial speech and the snappy band. All the Federalists were elected except one and that post was taken by a Nationalist, Pozzini. At the first meeting Jim Austin was elected Sergeant-at-Arms, Leo Ragni, Treasurer, and Edmund Ripoly, Chaplain. The student council carried out various projects such as: 35th Street was blocked off for the safety and convenience of the students, student council good citizenship laws were passed after prolonged de- bate, the student court functioned under an able judge, Pozzini, the sweater hop and the noon movies were a success, a clean-up campaign with Charlie Rieves as chairman spruced things up, the sale of First and Ten magazine netted some profit and Bellaire Handbook was printed from the funds collected. JL. 5-. Did you know that: the H. S. annual before 1909 was called the H. S. Review? That was in 1907 and 1908. In 1909 the word Beliuan was used for the first time. This name was proposed by Marian and Lillian Helliwell, daughters of Rev. Helliwell who was then pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church at 43rd and Noble Sts.-now Trinity Church. The word Bel-iu-an means Bellaire Junior Annual and it was published by the Junior class for several years. Dr. Earl Schaffer was Editor-in-chief of The H. S. Review, and Russel J. Callander was editor of the first Beliuan which was published in 1909 by the class of 1910. There were 106 students in Bellaire High School when the colors Red and Black were chosen as the H. 5. colors and the first Big Red B was worn on a black turtle-neck sweater by Robert Kinney the next day after the colors were chosen. It was made from red flannel and sewed on by his mother! 32 September 14 September 15 September 21 September 25 6 11 lfvmfa, September 5-School opens -Football rally for the opening game -Shadyside vs. Bellaire -The Allens do Sound on the air -Mr. Huntzinger sells magazines October 10-Beliuan pictures October 13-Junior Red Cross Drive October 14-Team goes to Pittsburgh to see Pitt play Rice October 20-Martins Ferry vs. Bellaire-a win at last October 24-Open House, Papas and Mammas galore October 25- November 14 Senator Taft in assembly -The Boosters fete the football team November 17-Reynolds, Jackson, Davis report on Boys', Girls' States November 21-Junior Class Play November 23-December 1-Big Snow December 8-No basketball assembly, Mr. Cribbs in hospital December 15-Christmas Program and Merry Yuletide January 2-Back in school January 3-Seniors register for diplomas January 9-Mr. McDonald takes club pictures January 12-Williams, the deep sea diver at 2:30 January 17, 18, 19-Semester Exams January 26-Junior Assembly February 3-Too much ice-senior tests postponed February 9-Senior Scholarship Tests-Groan! From then there wasn't much opposition except once. All in all it was a rough game all the way. Bellaire I9-Martins Ferry 6 A determined Ferry team scored first via a blocked punt. Then we stormed back with Don Brinker intercepting a pass for our first score. Then in the third quarter Pozzini ran over for the second score. Early in the fourth quarter Jim Bostancic plunged over for the final score. Bellaire 20--New Philadelphia 20 Still rolling along, Bellaire saw their 20-13 lead cut down in the last three seconds. Led by Pozzini and Tekeley, Bellaire picked up valuable yards. Bellaire 23-Bridgeport 0 Mud all over the field for the first time this year didn't bother the Big Reds. But despite the mud and water, the line and backs plunged and fought their way across Bridgeport's goal line. John Pozzini, Jim Tekeley, and Jim Bostancic and Cecil Secrest figured in the scoring. Bellaire 6-Wheeling 0 As Bellaire took the field, with 20 seniors on the squad, playing their last game, it was mostly a senior team fighting all the way. Pozzini drove over for the only TD after Jim Austin had blocked a punt. llflw Jlcum, ' ' Iwi' QU SOPHOMORES Roberta Basrak Gladys Bland Catherine Boccabella Curtis Clifford Ellis Cope Walter Dietrich Jeanne Foreman Lois Johnson Jean Keyser Frances Loeffler Carol Malpiedi Shirley McGuire Janie Mobley Susie Noice Theresa Parnell Robert Parrish Raymond Sanders Shirley Semple Barbara Sherry Delores Skorich Patricia Spears Sylvia Stern David Sutton Robert Vessels Mary Ann Wiggins Barbara Willerton Marguerite Wise Irene Zaleski FRESHMEN Sylvia Battistone Patty Bennington Margie Booher Josephine Brown Janice Bulger Donald Clark Maureen Closser Donald Cole Margaret Davis Tommy Decker Thomas Forbes Philip Frantz Chester Frye 90 James Gibson Margaret Glasgow Joyce Hall James Helms Jean Jaquay Carol Kate Darlene King William McFadden Phyllis Miller Joyce Milliken Margaret Morris Eileen Patrone Paul Patterson Gloria Rafeldt Margaret Simko Helen Snouffer Jean Stewart Judith Thoenen Dorothy Trigg Nick Trolley Anita Upperman Anne Voight V Geraldine Wright ELDA ALBAUGH, Girl Reserves, I, 2, 3, 4: Orchestra. It is mostly a question of making a start. You can open an account for as little as one dollar. You will look back on that day as one ofthe most important milestones in your lite. People attempt to justify their neglect in not having a savings account with the excuse that they can't save anything, that their ex- penses take up all their income. That may be true before they adopt a sensible spending plan and control their money. To say that the average person can't save is nonsense. Millions of people in the small- est income brackets have, and are, building up large and substantial savings accounts. Learn to CONTROL YOUR MONEY.
