THE BELLS RING OUT ANNOUNCING THE IQLI-O BELJUAN -X Z BELLAIRE HIGH SCHOOL BELLAIRE OHIO HE SCHOOL BELLS will ring out, creating the unending procession of bells throughout the community. Bicycles, street cars and busses bring the belles and beaus with their joys and their never ending woes to the pursuance of carefully planned courses, extra-curricular activities, varied sports and all the joys that high school offers. ?' .Q td 1 I s f 0 e A D f - J 4 THE IQ!!-O BELJUAN WE HEAR THE BELLS AS THEY RING AND GUIDE US ALONG THROUGH THE COURSE OF OUR YEAR'S ACTIVITIES AT BELLAIRE. ALL SORTS OF BELLS, BIG AND SMALL DOOR BELLS FIRE BELLS DUMB BELLS . .. REBELS . . . BELLES OF THE BALL ALL RING TOGETHER AND CALL FORTH TO US. AND WE GO ALONG CLANGING AND BANGING TILL AT LAST WE SHALL VENTURE OUT AND HOPE TO RING THE BELL FOR DEAR OLD BELLAIRE. From fall to early summer, we followed a varied course of activities, lessons during the week, football on Saturday, an occasional vacation period, assembliesfin- spiring, educational and entertaining each Friday, winter with basketball taking the lead in sports, clubs demanding our attention, lessons becoming longer as the days shorten, hope for a long eveningsjust doing nothing- fast fading away, spring with scholarship exams, cram- ming and more cramming for the finals, track, tennis, class plays, proms, chapels and operetta-and we drop into the fast stepping march toward june and commencement. What a happy, carefree life we have! f -V, ,-.,...--...-ez.--M-..... ...-n V, ,.,.,..... . ...W Coming to school is often a leisurely affair. lt is the habit of the majority of people to time their coming so advantageously that they do not spend more than five or ten extra minutes at school. Strolling is the most popular means of reaching school. Busses, street cars and bicycles come in for a good share, too. Some unfortunates reach here at seven-thirty. Others, by bus, arrive every five or ten minutes thereafter. After the early bus, in rush the band boys for rehearsals. Then the students who wish an extra few minutes of study, or a few minutes for loitering in the hall. The strollers, the tardy bell racers, and the tardy students themselves, follow in respective order and the day is begun. Well, we've wondered too-f but why be technical about trivialities? After all the suffering, mental delusions, physical anguish and what-not these Seniors have endured to reach this pinnacle of success, who vvouldn't heave a sigh of relief as commencement nears. Maybe physics still is surrounded by a haze of mystery, and the shorthand speed never exceeded ninety, but-we can, without the slightest hesitation, recite in chronolegical, numerical or alphabetical order, the first ten songs on the Hit Parade. .4- '4-lf V, t l N ew ADMINISTRATION Wlien the first bell of the school year rings out, the faculty looks upon the students with a feeling of anticipation and responsibility. Through the aid and interest of the faculty and the efficiency of the board of education, the students are taught cooperation, responsi- bility and dependability. In this atmosphere the nuclei of many great aspirations are nurtured until they mature and the dreams of youth are realized. The practicality of the board of education contrasted to the ideality of the teachers forms the foundation which is essential for better living. And thus the dreams of the faculty and administrative heads have been fulfilled as they see their students take their place in the world. 2 f? 9, HF My ' f ' A xx x 3 'Y Q ,ff ply If X f4 j. V. Regardless of the interest of a student, ite i' 'mst invariably sure of finding a high school club to further his interests. The musical units of our high school include the orchestra, concert and marching bands, and the glee clubs. These organizations have been developed to a high degree of proficiency and harmony by constant rehearsing in preparation for appearances at football games, contests, concerts, and assembly programs. The Girl Reserves and Hi-Y, branches of the Y. W. C. A. and Y. M. C. A., are character building organizations which build up a more dominant spiritual personality. Four years of membership in one of these results in a higher type of adolescent youth. One of the most interesting fields of activities is the preparation of our annual, The Beljuan. Racing against the deadline, trying to find the proper adjectives for the copy, mounting the endless number of pictures, soliciting for ads, are only a portion of the tasks that confront the staff. But as we look at the completed Beljuan we think it is the best we ever had. The Red and Black spent a colorful year, with news and scandal galore. The staff worked faithfully all year to prepare interesting reading for the rest of the school. R - 0 W J FRENCH CLUB Under the able leadership of Mr. Santa- vicca, the garcons and filles study the French people, their country, and their life. SALESMANSHIP The Sales Club members held jobs through the holidays and studied the art of clerking. BACHELOR BOYS The Bachelor Boys learned the funda- mentals of cooking under the direction ol' Miss Eby. GENERAL SCIENCE Mr. Bethel has encouraged the Gensci club to study current scientific problems. CHESS AND CHECKERS Mr. Griffin, chess and checker player ot' note, has stimulated an active interest in the game for mental giants. CAMERA CLUB Taking, developing and mounting pic- tures has occupied the time of those inter- ested in amateur photography. ARTS AND CRAFTS The Arts and Crafts, under the spon- sorship of Miss Crater and Mr. Lewis, spent a successful year making plaques, baskets, belts and many other articles. LATIN Although one of the older clubs it is still among the most popular. Miss Meeker is director of the club. MOVIE CLUB Composed of Upperclassmen, the Movie Club saw and discussed the movies of the year. Miss Haudenschield is the sponsor. GIRLS MANUAL TRAINING A new organization, specializing in manual crafts for girls, under the direction of Mr. Rataiczak. HISTORY Under the capable leadership of Messrs. Ault and Morris, the History Club has had an interesting time discussing world events. HOME ECONOMICS Misses Mclntire and Burr are the leaders of this group. Throughout the year the club members made many useful articles. RED AND BLACK To this group, Miss Wzttldell and Mr. Houston, we owe the publication of our sfhool paper, They worked hard to put out gi paper worthy of our school. GIRLS' Gl..:1i CLUB The Upper Class Girls' Glee Club of sixty-four voifes, under the direction of Miss Elizabeth Mulby, holds tt prominent place among the extrz1bt'urricul11r activities of the high school. BOYS' Gl.lZli CQLUH The Boys' Glee Club, dirctted by Mr. Arthur Canning, had a personnel of twenty- seven upperclassmen who practicetl faith- fully every Wedinestlay for their several ap- peuram-es in Assembly. COMMERCIAL CLUB Linder the direction of Mr. Myers, the Clommercittl Club has studied occupational fields open to graduates. They also took many interesting trips, CHEMISTRY CLUB Many interesting experiments which can- not be done in class are done by the Chem- istry Club under thc watchful eye of Mr. Bikgler. DRAMA CLUB Under the direction of Miss Darby, the Drama Club has presented several plays in Assembly, studied make-up and the legiti- mate stage. Marrying Marian The operetta presented this year was a comedy entitled aftying Marian. The scene was laid at Hillandale Seminary. lf'. 7an was played Louise Barker, and Charles by Carl Busch. Marian and her roof nate, Ruth Ripley, played by Betty Lou Dickens, spent happy days at the Seminary under the direction of Miss Prudence McWhiffle Qas dignified as her namej, portrayed by Helen Gianangeli. Everything went along peacefully until Charles, who was applying for a job as janitor at the Seminary, was mistaken for the new botany professor, Cicero -Smith. Charles was therefore made a professor by proxy, and Cicero a janitor by necessity. Cicero, played by Charles Lando, and Miss McWhiffle happened to fall in love. ln the meantime, Simpson, a supposed butler but in reality a thief planned to rob the Seminary. Dr. Bohunkus, head of Hillandale Seminary, found Marian in Charles' arms and learned the truth of the situation. Charles redeemed himself by catching Simpson, played by Fred Belt. All ended well for Marian and Charles. Miss McWl1iffle also succeeded in landing Cicero in spite of the poor fellow For pity's sake. Dr. Bohunkus, played by Louis Anon, his wife, played by Gloria Saffield, and their adopted, mischievous son, portrayed by Archie DeBacco, were all pleased with the turn of events. Simpson was captured and Ruth was happy in her r00mmate's happiness. The Girls' Glee Clubs combined with the Boys' Glee Club formed the choruses and dances. The music itself was light and catchy. Various dances were featured throughout the performance. Miss Nancy Covert, as the accompanist, and the High School Orchestra aided in making this show one of good entertainment. We believe that great credit should be advanced to Miss Malby, Miss Ewing and Miss Goldsmith for their tireless efforts and continual help toward making this operetta a success. The Upper Class Girls' Glee Club, under the direction of Miss Elizabeth Malby, vocal instructor, has been extremely active this year. Their splendid performances at Thanksgiving and Easter, and their inspiring candle-light service at Christmas, not to mention the Commencement music which brings together about four hundred mixed voices, show the results of their quality and training. Twelve members of this group participated in the Ohio Valley Festival Chorus at Wheeling. The Senior Sextet and the Mixed .Sextet have been very much in demand for chapl programs and outside activities. The Mixed Sextet had the privilege of singing over WWVA. Miss Malby also directs the Freshman Girls' Glee Club of sixty-seven members and the Freshman Boys' Club of forty-four members. Both these clubs have rendered commendable performances on several occasions. Much of the success of these organizations is due to the tireless efforts of their two accompanists, Dorothy Jean Bass, a senior who has been with us for four years, and Nancy Covert, a Sophomore. 47 ORCHESTRA PERSONNEL Yiolin--li. HIGH SCHOOL BAND The Symphonic Band representing Bellaire High in contests besides supplying a number of musicians to the Ohio Valley Clinic Band, has presented many fine concerts. Under the able direction of Mr. Beach and Mr. Canning, the band rated very high in the band contest at New Concord and is being sent to Columbus to compete in the State Contest. We owe special homage to the Band Mothers for the fine uniforms that they worked so hard to obtain for the band. So we end by saying orchids to the Band Mothers, success in whatever they undertake. Z i X lx X x X I F GIRL RESERVES One of the most active and successful clubs in Bellaire High is the Upper Class Girl Reserves. Many interesting programs, parties and dances were built around the theme Looking Through The Mirrors. The Leap Year Dance and Restaurant Party were highlights of the year. The officers who have served during the past year were: Lois Schommer, Doris Schramm, Helen Curtis, Florence Reinbolt, Gene Risler, Margorie Creamer, Vir' ginia Ault, Barbara Houston, Helen Gianangeli, Betty Leiffer, Sue Nelle Purinton, Dorothy Marie Neff, Ad- visors-Misses Humes, Allen, Meeker, Haudenschield and Price. SENIOR HI-Y During the past year, the Senior Hi-Y held many en- tertaining programs and parties. The untiring efforts of Mr. james Dixon, sponsor, Charles Linch, President, and the cooperation of the group as a whole has made the past, one of the most successful years in Hi-Y history. The club has purchased the new public address system we now enjoy in our auditorium and also made possible the sale of the score cards which we found so useful during the football season. J 5 1 DEBATE TEAM The Debate Team has enjoyed a very busy season. The Debaters had an extensive schedule and throughout the year engaged in over thirty debates. A ma- jority of these were won by the Bellaire Team. Several debates and debate tourna- ments were held in distant cities and as a result the team did a great deal of traveling with Mr. Bigler, generously acting as chauffeur. Much praise is due the Debaters for their hard work and to Coach Santavicca goes credit for his wily stratagem, helpful criticism and cooperative spirit. N. Anon, C. Axelrod, K. Archer, L. Anon. M. Although a comparatively new arrangement, it has worked well through the year. 53 F 'x Almost Eighteen Almost Eighteen, a comedy drama by Dana Thomas, was presented by the Senior Class on May 21. The plot centers around Eddie, who is almost eighteen. Eddie enters an essay contest to earn money to carry out his ambition to become a radio crooner. Eddie shows Uncle George an essay which wins his uncle's admiration. However, he does not make clear that this essay is not his own, so his uncle secretly attaches the boy's name to the essay and enters it. Eddie is awarded the prize but becomes suddenly ill when he sees that his name had been attached to an essay written by an eminent barrister of the 17th Century. The fraud is discovered by the school principal and since Eddie is unable to explain, he is placed in a very bad light with everyone, including his ideal, Ann. When Uncle George returns from a fishing trip, Eddie is exonerated and gets the prize awarded to the second best paper, which is really his own original work, entered under his first two names. We came here first as Freshmen green Very backward, timid and shy We wandered 'round in kind of a dream 'Til our first year had flown by. Then after summer vacation had passed And back to school we came, We found ourselves members of the Sophomore class With the junior year as our goal to attain. Then we were proud juniors in B. H. S. With hearts sincere and a courage true To make our records the very best yet To bring success and fame to our school. And now we're Seniors-our dreams come true And our time has come to bring fame to you We go out now to take our places With heads held high and smiles on our faces. The future is ours to make and to mold And though we know not what it holds, We'll do our best to make your name known Bellaire High-the school we call our own. Ch 01715 Classmates, our rendezvous with you is done, Oh, classmates, our hopes and dreams have all been won, We made the journey through four short years, And now the parting is bringing tears. It is true that here, cooperation, leadership, and sportsmanship are developed in an individual, and that the name of Bellaire High has been immortalized in the sports world as The All-American Town. The colorful glamour of a football sea- sonfswiftness on a basketball floor-and the dashing sprinters-spells Bellaire High. Here one may participate freely in competition, further friendships, and set up an idealistic standard. Athletics have now assumed a place of necessity in education and school life, and are credited by many with having done more to develop courage, perseverance, and level-headedness, than any subject taught. Each field offers an opportunity for participation, yet is so ever-changing as to give each individual an equal chance. . W A E I l r B. Rauscher Fullback M. At the time we go to press, it seems quite possible that the Bellaire High thinclads will take command of the track situation in the valley this year. The Big Red squad promises to be much stronger in the field events, and with the return of several veteran sprinters and middle distance men, Coach Niemiec should present a well balanced squad-one that must be considered as a serious threat to the present O. V. A. A. champions. Much is expected from the veterans, Wade, johnson, and Kahl along with sophomores jones and Hepe, in the two short dashes as well as the quarter and half mile events. In the weight events, Neff, Neuhart and D'Innocenzo will carry the hopes of the Reds, with Errington and Grigley taking care of the high jumping. A list of the varsity events and those competing in them is as follows: Discus 100 yd. Dash Neff, Neuhart, D'Innocenzo, Dydek Wade, Jones, Yourkovitch, Hughes. Mile 12,1111 220 yd. Dash Wright, Green, Spencer Wade, Hepe, Velt Shot Put 440 yd. Dash Neff, Neuhart, D'Innocenzo C. Kahl, Markle, Pitts High Jump 880 yd. Run Errington, Fitch, Hughes, Grigley Johnson Broad Jump Low Hurdles Hepe, Gill, Hughes, Pitts Errington, Fitch, Klempa, Crozier, Gill Pole Vault High Hurdles Yourkovitch, Gill Errlngton, Crozier, Klempa This Bellaire squad will tackle one of the heaviest schedules of any squad in the valley. The schedule follows: April 6-Wheeling April 20-O. V. A. A. at Wheeling April 9-Bamesville April 27-Intelligencer at Triadelphia April 13-St. Clairsville, Triadelphia, May 4-Belmont Relays T' 1 h' at nadep la May 11-District meet at Uhrichsville April 16-St. Clairsville 68 -11 , , -.Ln , a.-hnnltlnuinu.
