Teets 4 . ravi K Q QM Q... 74 uf. I 1 2 Immediate Past President, Robert Scherer, ends 15 years of service. V Robert Scherer, Ron Nichols and Ronnie McCormick are leaving their respective jobs at the end of this school year. Scherer and Nichols both effectively -it served on the School Board. Each have ' seen many positive improvements during the nine years Mr. McCormick has served as superintendent. Together, the Board of Education and McCormick have promoted better salaries and fringe benefits for staff members, initiated a breakfast program in the Bell Ciiy Schools, and have made over 580,000 in improvements to the educational buildings. McCormick, the Board of Education, APT and CTA worked hard to get information to the people about the tax levy. I appreciate the support of the people of the Bell City R2 School District in passing the tax levy on April 5, McCormick stated. McCormick's immediate family consists of Donna, his wife, and Marty, his dog. They were all present at the CTA Supper including Marty - all dressed up in a tuxedojacket exclusively designed by his owner, Donna. Ronnie McCormick Reti A -. ' X fo Student Life It Was Great In '88 'Alt was great in '88! That was the theme not only for the year- book, but for many teachers and students alike. Students and teachers seemed to be deter- mined to make the 1987-88 school year the best one yet, and it seems they have succeeded. 'AI have fun everyday that I come to school, said Lemira Parks, sci' ence teacher. FHA Week and Homecoming Week were just a few of the many activities that went on during the school year. FHA Week, which was February 8-12 consisted of a week of fun-filled activities for everyone. However there was a more serious side to the fun. An AIDS movie was also presented to show the student body just how real the AIDS epidemic is. During Homecoming Week, which was Feb. 1-5, a western theme, Forever and Ever Amen, was provided. The Pep Club did a great job of making the week fun-Hlled for everyone. E fhe Watkins said, I had a lot of fun working on the Homecoming dec- orations. Jennifer Jenkins, 'sophomore, said, In my Zoology class, I es- pecially had a good time trying to dissect a worm. The whole time I was doing it, Mrs. Parks, Monte, and Tarita were laughing at me. I also always have fun at lunch break because then I get to talk and laugh with my friends. Although 1988 has been a great year, some students still protest that 1989 will be even better. Teresa Capps, junior, said, Of course 1989 will be a good year! That's when I graduate. 8 Student Life Mc Ac Sp Fo M L G r- Not only crying over his hot dog, William Dowdy 192 thinks S - about how bad Bad was and what was Out this year. S o 'fCoca you dec l T.V. You would think of teenagers rebelling and thinking parents do not know what they are talking about. Surprisingly it was found in a poll taken within the Sophomore class that Bell City Sophomores are a rare bunch. Unlike most teenagers, they have good relationships with their parents. Randy Tankersley is one of those Sophomores. He said, You should have an open relationship with parents. Amy Wood stated, Usually your parents will be there when no one else is. Sophomores also get along with their parents, which is of great consequence at that age. Jonathon Abner replied, I get along with my mother and father because we communicate with each other. At 15 most teenagers can't associate with their parents at all. Academics 41 An1ta's Pnotogyaphj 5 W Stoddard Dexter, Mo 638Ul, I sing the praise of the unknown teacher. Famous educators plan new systems of pedagogy, but it is the unknown teacher who delivers and guides the young. He lives in obscurity and contends with hardship. He keeps the watch along the borders of darkness and makes the attack on the trenches of ignorance and folly. Patient in his daily duty he strives to conquer the evil powers which are the enemies of youth. He awakens sleeping spirits. He quickens the indolent, encourages the eager, and steadies the unstable. He communicates his own joy in learning and shares with boys and girls the best treasures of his mind. He lights many candles which, in later years, will shine back to cheer him. This is his reward. Knowledge may be gained from booksg but the love of knowledge is transmitted only by personal contact. No one has deserved better of the republic than the unknown teacher. Daughter said that inventory of all books will be much quicker. I don't offer anything that isn't successful, said Randy Abernathy. All the bugs are worked out before I offer any class. Abernathy said he had a three point philosophy for getting along with students. 1. Establish your rules the first day, 2. don't make a threat you can't back up, and 3. treat them like you want to be treated. Typing is a class every student should take. If you're going to college, I strongly recommend you take typing, said Beverly Metheny. While talking about her classes, Metheny said accounting was her favorite to teach. It moves fast and you work on different transactions every few days. Automation of the library will take place with an IBM computer and a barcode printer. This year all books will receive a barcode number. Next year students will be given a number, also, said Karla Daughtery. The program spans three years and will end with the hook- up of a phone modem. There were two new home economics courses offered this year. Consumer Education and Family and Industrial Health. The objective of Consumer Education is to help the students become wise consumers, said Juanita Fisher. Industrial Health is designed to help understand the related aspects of health of a family. Ask Beta Club members what their one word would be to de- scribe this year and they'll tell you, HECTIC! This year was Bell City's turn to host the District 8 Beta meeting, and the weeks be- fore the meetings were Hlled with hectic preparation. Senior Natalie Metcalf said, I spent most of my time on the phone to the various schools in the district getting all the details ready for the day. Lots of paper work was done and programs were typed. As if that wasn't enough they also had to plan Ladd Callow's campaign for vice president. Ladd replied, I was nervous giving my speech but it really wasn't all that bad. All the worrying about being ready was in vain, everything went off without a hitch despite Ladd's loss. Afterwards the Beta Club went right into preparing for another big event, the Missouri State Beta Convention. Drawn by Hollye Rivers hun-f If I if 0 BETA CLUB OFFICERS AND SPONSORS - l. to rt. The band con- sists of 26 instrumentalists, 3 banner carriers, 2 majoret- tes, and a drum majorette, all under the direction of Mr. Bill Link. Mr. Link in- corporated a great deal of time and energy into mak- ing this band into one that puts forth a terrihc sound for its Size. With this being Mr. Link's 'first year, it was challenging, rewarding, and interesting. Mr. Link was quoted as saying, Much of the challenge has come from working with a high school band of only 26 members and competing with much larger school systems whose bands often number over 100 players. Link has found the BC Band to be large in ability. It has been rewarding to me to work with this group who, though limited by its small size, is so capable of pro- ducing a big sound. A list of parades and activities the band participated in 87- 88 were the Bell City Pa- rade, Cape Parade, Sikes- ton Cotton Carnival Parade, Jackson Band Festival and Parade, Christmas Pro- gram, District Music Con- test at SEMO, and Spring Concert. 72 High School Band lyf, f , , fy I , if ff , Z I. Drawn By: Tarita Tilley 7.f'Q H4664 This year, the 1988 Homecoming week started off with a genuine war-hoop that echoed throughout the student body. A western theme was provided, with the lead song being 'Forever and Ever Amen by Randy Travis. What I thought was the best was the pep rallies, said Seprena Murray, II. Hlt was fun seeing people make fools out of themselves. The activities that were held that week were: calf roping, bull riding, Marshall Dillon and Miss Kitty look- alike , chug-a-lug, covered wagon, and wall decorating contests. Timmy Taylor, IO, participated in a class song competition. Four sophomore boys got up in front of the student body, dressed as girls and sang their hearts out. Taylor said, I was embarrassed, but it was worth it for the laugh. 5. Q. . FL Pep ClubfHomecoming 89 Y .-- .. .Y.,.-,-H. --iq.-v-,-,-3-..,- -, , . . L.,.:,..,, M1, ,atm ... ..L..,..,--1-4. At the beginning of the season no one seemed to think even winning the first district game would be possible, let alone taking second place. However, the team proved everyone wrong as they fought with all they had to get past Richland and Oran to go against Advance in the finals. Coach Carl Ritter, Jr. said, I always knew the girls had it in them, there werejust times they had. trouble showing it. The first game against Richland proved to be an easy win. Although, the next game proved to be not quite so simple. Oran :vas not willing to be beaten easily. lt took three hard-fought sets to earn Bell City a chance at first. But with two games to play in one night and only 30 minutes between them, Bell City just couldn't handle Advance and had to settle for second place, but for the team, second was just as good as first. Senior Natalie Metcalf said, We didn't really figure on beating Advance, so getting second, to us, was just like Hrstf' Junior Jenny Teets replied, The season didn't start out all that great but getting second topped it off real well.
