Music The music department of the Belfast Local High School began its year with two new music teachers. We are indebted to Mrs. Coline Brown, vocal instructor, and Miss Harshbarger, instrumental director, for their interest and co-operation in this depart- ment. ' On October 23 the band made its first appearance at the Junior Class Play. Special numbers included saxophone solos by Betty McKenzie and Linda Burnett. The Triettes, a trio made up of Wilma and Betty McKenzie and Linda Burnett, sang two numbers. On November 5 the Daughters of the American Revolution Organization from Hillsboro, presented the school with a new flag. A very nice program was arranged on the front lawn for the entire school. The band and mixed chorus provided the music. The taps were played by Charles West. The entire school presented the annual Christmas program December 21 in the school auditorium. The production included the high school mixed chorus and band, along with many specialty numbers by the grades. A candlelight recessional concluded the program. ' V The band played several numbers when the Farmer's Institute was held February 5, and once again the Triettes sang. The Junior Band performed at the Home and School Organization meeting during the year. The music department was represented at the Wilmington Fold Festival, when Linda Burnett was a participant, and at the County Music Festival held at Lynchburg, Friday evening, March 19. Nine members of the band and sixteen members of the mixed chorus represented the school. A The Senior Class Play was given April 9. The following special numbers were prepared for this night: Tap dancej-Agatha McKee and Katherine Howard, Saxophone duet--Betty McKenzie and Joe Phil Westg Baritone solo--Patti Reno. The final num- bers were sung by the Girls' Ensemble. On March 21 Betty McKenzie and Linda Burnett entered the district music contests at Wilmington. Betty received a Il or excellent rating on alto saxophone. Linda re- ceived a I or superior rating on both piano and saxophone. On April 10 at the state finals Linda received a I on saxophone and II on piano. The mixed chorus sang for the baccalaureate services May 23. The band made its final performance of the school year when it combined with the Sinking Spring's band for the commencement exercises, May 29. The following Seniors made their final appearance that night when Wilma McKenzie and Ruth White played solos, and Linda Burnett a saxophone solo. Linda Burnett

' Social Activities During our Freshman year we were so studious that we did not have any class parties. However, in May, 1951, the entire high school had a pic- nic at Lake White. We were chaperoned by Mrs. McMahon and Mr. Glauner. As Sophomores we, together with the Freshmen in our biology class, went for a nature trip through Mr. McKenzie's upper woods. With assistance from our teacher, Mr. Wright, we collected various specimens, including a bat and a hornet's nest which the boys were determined to bring back to class. During the fall of our Junior year, delegates from all the high schools of Highland County participated in a series of conservation trips. Our Junior Class had two-delegates: Wilma Jean McKenzie and Glenna Williamson. A little later that fall, we took a hayride to Mr. McElwee's where we had a wiener roast and games. Following, we all climbed aboard McKenzie's truck and went to the theater, serenading Hillsboro with our country voices as we rode. On May 15, 1953 we gave our traditional Junior-Senior Banquet in honor of the Senior Class. u At 7:00 P. M. dinner was served in the school cafeteria to a group of thirty-four people. The toastmaster was Donald Walker. The Invocation was given by Mrs. Wisecup, Phyllis Leininger, President of the Senior Class, responded to a welcome given by Glenna Williamson of the Junior Class. Toasts were given by Mr. McElwee and Mr. Jenkins. The cafeteria was decorated with ferns and spring flowers corresponding to the class colors. Following the dinner we went to the gaily decorated gym for entertainment. Everyone had an enjoyable evening. We experienced our first real try at dramatics when we presented our Junior Class Play entitled Aunt Tillie Goes to Town , October 24, 1952. Under the direction of Mrs. Leone Wisecup, our efforts to perform this three- act comedy proved to be a success. The cast was as follows: Tillie Trask .....................
