Both of these persons started out teaching us when we began our high school and have done a very good job of teaching us the principles of honesty, integrity, truthfulness, and all the other helpful factors needed in the way of life. We will never forget all that they have done for us. We hope we put the things that we have learned to use by being useful citizens such as they have been. We appreciate their patience and the interest they have taken in each of us. We hope that the next classes will like and appreciate these two as we have and they will have a very good start for the future. Thank you Mr. McElwee and Mr. Williams for everything! I, Donald Walker, leave my ability to go with the girls to Donnie Milburn. I, Larry Elmore, leave my ability to get along with Bill Roach to Tootie McKee. I, Ilena Palmer, leave my ability to be quiet to Kate Howard. I, Ruth White, leave my ability to play the clarinet to Scarlet fMaxine Barnesl. I, Linda Burnett, leave my blank expression in govern- ment class to Betty Kay McKenzie. I, Mildred Parker, leave my ability to hate boys to Naomi Baldwin. I, Martha Hayes, leave my ability to be pathetic to Mr. Williams. I, Wilma Jean McKenzie, leave my title of Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair to Jennie Marshall. Take care of it, Jennie. I, Glenna Williamson, leave my ability to play the drums to Mary McColm. I, Mary Michael, leave my ability to get A's in typing to John Dodds. Be sure and get A's, John. BY Larry Elmore Class Poem 'Larry Elmore is really a sad case. With him we girls never got to first base. All he could get through that beautiful pate, Was visions of some kind of new fishing bait. One of our Seniors, really good at battin', Found it too much to take second year Latin. Scholastically, well she's got a good brain, But to use it, to her seemed too much a strain. In case you haven't guessed, Ruth White is the name. Mildred Parker is our gadabout For one whole year for Marshall she did shout. Mid is the flirt of the '54 class And to look upon, she's a very fair lass. Mary Michael is our secretary to be. To Leo's heart she holds the key. She's going to marry him, so I hear Then never again will Sal shed a tear. Glenna Williamson, the Senior big brain, will end up in a hall of fame, If she first doesn't blow up a chemistry lab, where her tests at times were bad. The smells that issued from the floor below-- Who should be blamed? Ah ---------- Now you should know. Linda Burnett is a musical kid, From Donnie McK. she says she'll never skid. Those predictions have been madebefore So stick around, folks, and see what's in store. Martha Hayes is the one to settle down to marry Bob and quit running around. She and Bob will have a nice home ---- Then never again will Hayes go on the roam. Ilena Palmer is the most silent lass, and can be depended upon in government class Bergie to us is a very good friend, To help, over backwards she'd bend. Richard Behm--good basketball he did play, For his senio-Rita over Marshall way. At Ohio State, we wish him success, And hope he doesn't flunk too many math tests. Donald Walker is a handsome sort of lad. When it comes to shooting basketball, he really isn't bad. He's California bound, so they say, We wish him all success along the way. Wilma Jean isn't much of a poet, as this stab at one must surely show it She'll be a telephone operator---About her plans she can smile, Unless the Army gets Bennie, before they walk down the aisle. ' 7 In our first game in the tournament, we defeated Fairfield by a score of 53-44. The next game, we came back to play Lynchburg. We were edged out by a score of 39-37. Our last game, we did not come up to our usual average and thus fell by the wayside by a score of 50-38. 7 , Q . t ' We did get something out of the basketball season this year, we tied with Lynchburg for second place in the county league. We are indebted to Mrs. Coline Brown, vocal instructor, and Miss Harshbarger, instrumental director, for their interest and co-operation in this depart- ment. ' On October 23 the band made its first appearance at the Junior Class Play. Special numbers included saxophone solos by Betty McKenzie and Linda Burnett. The Triettes, a trio made up of Wilma and Betty McKenzie and Linda Burnett, sang two numbers. On November 5 the Daughters of the American Revolution Organization from Hillsboro, presented the school with a new flag. A very nice program was arranged on the front lawn for the entire school. The band and mixed chorus provided the music. The taps were played by Charles West. The entire school presented the annual Christmas program December 21 in the school auditorium. The production included the high school mixed chorus and band, along with many specialty numbers by the grades. A candlelight recessional concluded the program. ' V The band played several numbers when the Farmer's Institute was held February 5, and once again the Triettes sang. The Junior Band performed at the Home and School Organization meeting during the year. The music department was represented at the Wilmington Fold Festival, when Linda Burnett was a participant, and at the County Music Festival held at Lynchburg, Friday evening, March 19. Nine members of the band and sixteen members of the mixed chorus represented the school. A The Senior Class Play was given April 9. The following special numbers were prepared for this night: Tap dancej-Agatha McKee and Katherine Howard, Saxophone duet--Betty McKenzie and Joe Phil Westg Baritone solo--Patti Reno. The final num- bers were sung by the Girls' Ensemble. On March 21 Betty McKenzie and Linda Burnett entered the district music contests at Wilmington. Betty received a Il or excellent rating on alto saxophone. Linda re- ceived a I or superior rating on both piano and saxophone. On April 10 at the state finals Linda received a I on saxophone and II on piano. The mixed chorus sang for the baccalaureate services May 23. The band made its final performance of the school year when it combined with the Sinking Spring's band for the commencement exercises, May 29. The following Seniors made their final appearance that night when Wilma McKenzie and Ruth White played solos, and Linda Burnett a saxophone solo. ' Social Activities During our Freshman year we were so studious that we did not have any class parties. However, in May, 1951, the entire high school had a pic- nic at Lake White. We were chaperoned by Mrs. McMahon and Mr. Glauner. As Sophomores we, together with the Freshmen in our biology class, went for a nature trip through Mr. McKenzie's upper woods. With assistance from our teacher, Mr. Wright, we collected various specimens, including a bat and a hornet's nest which the boys were determined to bring back to class. During the fall of our Junior year, delegates from all the high schools of Highland County participated in a series of conservation trips. Our Junior Class had two-delegates: Wilma Jean McKenzie and Glenna Williamson. A little later that fall, we took a hayride to Mr. McElwee's where we had a wiener roast and games. Following, we all climbed aboard McKenzie's truck and went to the theater, serenading Hillsboro with our country voices as we rode. On May 15, 1953 we gave our traditional Junior-Senior Banquet in honor of the Senior Class. u At 7:00 P. M. dinner was served in the school cafeteria to a group of thirty-four people. The toastmaster was Donald Walker. The Invocation was given by Mrs. Wisecup, Phyllis Leininger, President of the Senior Class, responded to a welcome given by Glenna Williamson of the Junior Class. Toasts were given by Mr. McElwee and Mr. Jenkins. The cafeteria was decorated with ferns and spring flowers corresponding to the class colors. Following the dinner we went to the gaily decorated gym for entertainment. Everyone had an enjoyable evening. We experienced our first real try at dramatics when we presented our Junior Class Play entitled Aunt Tillie Goes to Town , October 24, 1952. Under the direction of Mrs. Leone Wisecup, our efforts to perform this three- act comedy proved to be a success. The cast was as follows: Tillie Trask ..................... Mr. and Mrs. Wisecup were present as guests. The grand climax of the evening came when Mr. McElwee gave a hilarious impersonation of a salesman. One of the highlights of our Senior year was the presentation of our class play entitled Mi1lion Dollar Cook , given on April 9, 1954. Our director was Mrs. Leone Wisecup.
