BLACK MONDAY — The Dow Jones industrial average plunged 508 points to an all- time low following the biggest one-day selloff in history October 19. POP ARTIST — Andy Warhol, 58, immortalized the Campbell's soup can and brought pop art to life in the 1960s. He once proclaimed everyone would have 15 minutes of fame HOW SWEET IT IS — Jackie Gleason, 71. created Brooklyn rotund bus driver, Ralph Kramdon, in television The Honeymooners. TV FAVORITE — Lome Greene, 72. played the father to three boys in the television series Bonanza for fourteen years. He later used his gentle, but rugged, appearance in TV commercials. In fact, your years at Belfast Central School represent just the beginning steps to a life long journey of learning The knowledge you have gained at Belfast Central School will represent the foundation for additional learning that will take place during each day of your lives You can assure yourselves success by making sure that you are enthusiastic and receptive to all of the lessons that life will give you. I salute you for your academic achievements while you attend- ed Belfast Central School and I urge you to use the knowledge you have gained here as a basis for continued personal growth. Please come back and visit us We need to know how we can make Belfast Central School a better school. Dennis M Doell Principal This has been a special year in the Belfast Central School District — a committee of school personnel and local citizens has begun work on compiling a history of our school district It is fitting to pay tribute to those educational pioneers who could not possibly have foreseen how their sense of commitment and belief in the value of education would impact you. the 1988 graduating class. While their initiative served an immediate need in Belfast, they demonstrated wisdom and foresight, and perhaps most impor- tantly. a profound faith in the future generations of our communi- ty to sustain and build upon what they had begun What began m 1851 as a one-room school has evolved to the school as we know it today. I simply ask that, before you leave the corridors and classrooms of this building for the last time, you reflect for a moment on what has been made available to you here in Belfast Central School. Reflect not only on the bricks and mortar, but on the optimism for the future years felt by those who came so long before you. I. along with your teachers and your parents, feel the same optimism and faith in you as you take this giant step into adult- hood You take with you the hopes and dreams of so many people who have cared about you over the past many years Best wishes Robert Bouldin Superintendent BoauL Of BduaHoK Seated R. This year the National Honor Soci- ety members enjoyed an evening of entertainment when they travelled to Desiderio's dinner theater to watch The Prisoner of Second Avenue . They also assisted the Belfast Parent Teacher Association by contributing their time to help with “Saturday After- noon Matinees”. Additionally, members of the Nation- al Honor Society decided to organize and run a blood drive this year. With the help of the American Red Cross, we hope to establish this activity as an annual drive. The National Honor Society also aided the school by helping with kindergarten screening. As al- ways, members of the National Honor Society made their yearly trip to the Castle for the Allegany County National Honor Society Banquet. 34 The Student Council is the governing body of Belfast Central School. It consists of two repre- sentatives from each class, grades seven through twelve. Officers are also elected, but they must be in tenth grade or above. The Stu- dent Council Elections are held at the end of each school year for both representatives and officers. They organize a school calendar which shows the dates of approved dances and class money making projects. They also plan and or- ganize the prom which is held in May. OFFICERS: C. Guilford. Did an angel fly with you down from the sky? Were you found in a gooseberry patch? Did a fairy bring you from fairyland To my door-that was left on a latch? No-my darling was born of a wonderful love. A love that was Daddy's and mine. A love that was human, but deep and profound. A love that was almost divine Do you remember, sweetheart, when we went to the zoo. And we saw the big bear with a grouch? And the tigers and lions, and that tall kangaroo That carried her babe in a pouch? Do you remember I told you she kept then there safe From the cold and the wind, till they grew Big enough to take care of themselves? And. dear heart. That's just how I first cared for you. Throughout the season, every game was close and the boys dis- played a lot of heart and determination. Seniors Chris Enders, Eric Melaro, and Har- old Weaver proved to be strong leaders and of great assis- tance to the youn- ger players and myself. The 1987 girls' varsity soccer season was a very successful one. The girls com- piled a league re- cord of 11 - 2 -1 and an overall record of 14 - 4 - 1. Melissa Preston, Diane McCumiskey, Chrissy Green, and Tracy Atherton were se- lected as County All-Stars. The girls won the Gunlock Tournament at Co- hocton over a dou- ble A school. They also reached the semi-final round of Section 5 competi- tion. Both Eric and Quint were named to the Coun- ty All-Star Team. Eric, a senior, will certainly be missed next year. Mike Schul tallied a team high. 108 points and 9 service aces. They proved to be a strong trav- elling team, winning five of their games on the road. Many of their losses were close and to more experienced teams. Senior Chris Enders led the team in scor- ing and will truly be missed next year. Congratulations on a fine season and keep striving for success. The girls' basketball team's record this year was 1-15. The girls never gave up and worked hard until the end. Chrissy Green led the team in scoring and was also selected to the County All-Star Team. Patti Pohlig, a freshman, was the team's leading re- bounder. Senior Tina Livergood will surely be missed in the fu- ture. With such a young team there is a good outlook for the future. This was the most suc- cessful season ever. Chrissy Green was cho- sen as a County All-Star. Diane McCumiskey, Jeni Hasper, and Tracy Atherton re- ceived Honorable Mentions. We lost only two seniors, Rachel Bunt and Shari Johnson. We wish them the best of luck in the future. The 1987 boys' baseball team had its ups and downs. As the season pro- gressed we seemed to do better against the stronger teams and poorer against the weaker teams. The experience of many seniors was a factor for the posi- tive outcome of this team. Many people judge a winning sea- son only by the num- ber of wins. This team had many winning qualities be- sides being able to win. ' ei W7 69 Keep Youk Eye Ok Tie Bag!! The tennis team improved its record to 3 - 5 this year. Each team member showed great improvement throughout the season. Eric Me- laro and Sheila Preston represented Belfast in the County Tournament playing doubles, while Chris Melaro and Mike Schul played singles. Eric received the honor of being selected MVP and Tammy Osterhout was awarded MIP.
