You have reached a major goal in your lives—you'll soon be high school graduates! Congratulations—I'm very proud of each of you. We've tried to teach you math, language, and all the other subjects you'll need to know to be a productive member of society. We've tried to give you a sense of belonging, both to a school and to a community—Belfast. But most of all, I hope we've given you a sense of pride in yourself and the realization that the human spirit and your desire to be successful will contribute to the individual you finally become. It is the human spirit that allows an individual to surpass the ordinary. Without it, all aspirations would be quantitative—our limiting factors would allow some of us a great deal of success, some a little success, some no success. But the human spirit can transcend the reality of our abilities. It was the human spirit that allowed a Vietnam war veteran to spend three years walking across America— on his hands. It was the human spirit that allowed Terry Fox to run across America with a prosthesis on the stump of a leg he lost to cancer. And it's the human spirit that allows each of us to rise above the measurable levels of ability and skill to reach a goal. Use your education, use all the tools we've provided you with. Look beyond what you THINK you are, and the realities you per- ceive. What you can do with your mind and your hands will accom- plish a reasonable goal. It will be your heart and the spirit that will allow you to surpass what you CAN do and make your dreams come true. Robert Bouldin Superintendent It is a pleasure for me to extend greetings to you, the Class of 1987, as you prepare for your graduation. For some of you it may seem that time spent at Belfast Central School has been an eternity. In fact, your years in high school will represent a very small portion of your life, however, the knowledge you have obtained here will be the foundation for many years of additional educational experiences and life experiences that can, if you use them wisely, launch you into a successful future. I salute you for your academic achievements and high standard of conduct you used while you attended Belfast Central School, and at the same time, I challenge you to remain receptive to the ideas and experiences you will encounter in your future. It will be important for you to continue to grow academically, and in your sensitivity to the needs of those around you. Please come back and visit us.
