TABLE OF CONTENTS SENIORS . . . 3 ACTIVITIES 51 UNDERCLASSMEN . 15 ACADEMICS 61 ELEMENTARY . . 29 SPORTS 67 FACULTY . . 45 DEDICATION MEMORIAL 85 BELFAST CENTRAL SCHOOL KING STREET BELFAST, N.Y. X471X To the Class of 1980: Over the past several years, you have worked and stud- ied, practiced and played and grown. You have grown mentally as well as physically and now you are approach- ing the time when you begin your lives as members of the adult community. For some of you, this will mean a job and the responsi- bility of family living. For others, this will mean college and further years of study and preparation. Whatever course your future takes, it is my sincere hope that you will look back on your years here as having prepared you to meet and deal with the challenges that life will present. On behalf of the staff and Board of Education of the Belfast Central School, I wish each and every one of you the happiness of a productive life, the respect of your fellow human beings, and the love of your family. May the future be yours. Robert Bouldin Superintendent A D M I N I S T R A T I O N To the Class of 1986: I want you to know how proud we are of all of you upon your graduation from Belfast Central School. When I was young and foolish, I used to admire people who told me that they were a self-made man or a self- made woman. As you graduate, I challenge you to think of yourself not as a self-made person, but to think of your- self as a person that was molded and shaped by many different people. At this stage in your life, it is important for you to remember that no matter what occupation you choose, that, very soon, you will have the awesome re- sponsibility and joy to touch others and help to shape and mold them. As you leave Belfast Central School, be pre- pared to reach out to others, to touch them, and to mold them, with some of the knowledge and wisdom that you have gained, not only from your parents, friends and members of this community. But also from your teachers at Belfast Central. May God continue to bless you in all that you do with your lives. Dennis Doell Principal BOARD OF EDUCATION Row 1: B. Foley, P. Guilford, B. Back- er. SOCCER The 1985 boys varsity soccer team concluded the year with 12 wins, 6 losses, and a tie. I was pleased with the desire and effort put forth by our team. The seniors this year were Thomas Parker (1st team all-star), Andy Chamberlain (1st team all-star). Rich Thornton (2nd team all-star). Bill McKelvey, and Tom Chalker. The season was filled with many exciting moments. I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to each se- nior for his contribution to our soccer program. Coach Sullivan The 1985 girls soccer team finished the season with its best record ever, 13 wins and 4 losses. The girls won their first ever league championship. We are looking forward to continual suc- cess next year. The team will greatly miss seven seniors next year. We will be losing Karen Babbitt, Dynette DeRock, Lorraine Livergood, Kelva Borden, Laurie Hosmer, Dixie Thorn- ton, and Lisa Meyers. Lorraine Liver- good and Sheila Collins were chosen as league all-stars, with Lorraine as most valuable player in the league. Karen Babbitt received a league hon- orable mention. Coach Young 68 BASKETBALL The Boy's Varsity Basketball Team ended its regular season with an 8 - 6 league record and an overall record of 9-9. The team provided a great deal of excitement and enthusiasm through- out the season, as 9 of the games were decided by 5 or less points. The high- light of the season was a triple over- time loss to undefeated, league cham- pion Whitesville. In the first round of Sectionals the team beat higher seeded Jasper 51 - 47 and met Prattsburg in second round play. Prattsburg defeat- ed us 67 - 77 in a very exciting game. Graduating seniors from this years squad are Charlie Clark, Thomas Parker, and Rich Thornton. Coach Lee The JV Basketball team enjoyed a very competitive season. A number of players worked very hard and were able to improve their skills considera- bly. Tri-Captains were Chris Enders, Eric Melaro and Jay Hosmer. The teams best offensive player was Chris Enders who averaged 16 points a game. Coach Smith Determination and desire are the trade marks of the 1986 Girl's Basket- ball Team. The leadership of the se- niors and the good blend of under- classmen has made the '86 team strong and competitve. Graduating se- niors Karen Babbitt, Lorraine Liver- good, Dixie Thornton, Dynette De- Rock, and Laurie Hosmer will be greatly missed next year. The girls are good outside shooters, but also play a strong aggressive inside game. These girls are winners! Coach Young 70 Even though the Girls JV Bas- ketball Team finished the season with a 0-7 record, the girls showed tremendous improve- ment in all phases of the game by the seasons end. The team members were Cheryl McCu- miskey. Dawn Sullivan, Eurriel Hosmer, Donna Brauen, Rose Kish, Cathy Livergood, and Shannon Kenyon. _________________ Coach Leach CHEERLEADING The 1985 - 1986 Cheerleading sea- son was highlighted by the winning of two trophies. We received a 1st run- ner- up trophy at the Scio Competi- tion, and a second place trophy at the Caledonia-Mumford Competition. Dixie Thornton, Kelva Borden, Nicki Curcio, Stephanie Shattuck, Helen Cassady, Dynette DeRock, and Ronda Kish are the senior cheerleaders that will be greatly missed next season. We would like to say thanks to all the fans who supported us throughout the season, and a special thanks to Brenda Johnson, our advisor for al- ways being there. JR. HIGH SPORTS BOYS 7TH 8TH BASKETBALL GIRLS 7TH 8TH BASKETBALL BOYS 7TH 8TH SOCCER 73 BASEBALL 1985 was a super year for baseball at Belfast. After settling down on de- fense the boys played well. We fin- ished our season with 8 wins and 8 losses. We advanced to the semi-final round of the Section V tournament. Our seniors were Steve Collins (sec- ond base) and Kevin Borden (left field- er). With such a young team we are optimistic to the future. Thanks Steve and Kevin for everything. Coach Sullivan VOLLEYBALL The Lady Spikers finished the sea- son with an overall record of 8 - 5 and a league record of 6 - 4 which placed them 4th in the league and took them to the Sectionals. “New was the word for the 1985 season. The girls had to learn a new approach to volleyball play and had to put up with a new coach who had new expectations for the team. From day one , said Coach Lutz, my goal was to see the girls reach Sectional playoffs and they did it! Our goal next year: Finals! Senior athletes Karen Babbitt (top hitter) and Laurie Hosmer will be greatly missed next year. Congratulations on a job well done. The team was led by Sheila Collins (captain), with 113 pts. and Diane McCumiskey with 152 pts. Sheila was also voted to the league all- star team. The J.V. Team should be commend- ed on their team play. They were truly dedicated and showed great improve- ment. Cheryl McCumiskey led the team with 92 pts. We would like to thank Joanne Baker and Rob Conti for keeping the books as well as those fans that sup- ported us this year! n 74 TENNIS Although the Tennis Team finished the season with an 0 - 8 record, they show great promise for the upcoming season. Highlights include 8th grader Andy Doell's tie breaking match against 6'6 Todd Wolfer from Fill- more. Andy represented Belfast in Sectionals playing singles. Karen Bab- bitt and Eric Melaro teamed up for doubles and won their first round of Sectionals, beating Andover in 2 sets. Tammy Cotton received the Most Im- proved Player Award and Karen Bab- bitt earned the Most Valuable Player Award. Coach Lutz SOFTBALL This year was the first year in a long time that our Softball Team qual- ified for Sectional play with a 5 - 5 Record. Although we lost in the first round of Sectionals the steady im- provement that the girls have shown was truly super! Bernie Green was chosen for the County All- Star Team as well as team Most Valuable Player. Sheila Collins received the Most Im- proved Player Award. We are looking forward to an even better season next year! Coach Histed 76 WE VE GOT THE BEAT!' 78 79 YEAH! dorlgratulations Seniors from'Gerry Fish }™o Body st pf L k. fcr J. ROBERT O'GRADY Now You're Gone Now you're gone, I realize you were a precious friend, you brightened up my cloudy skies and loved me to the end. You lead me to my real self and showed me who I am, you took my heart off of the shelf and let me know that I can. So now I'm thanking you, my friend for everything you've done, and to you my love I send- to you, my shining sun. DEDICATED TO . . . MR. GEOFFREY HICKS Life You never know how good you have it until the good is gone - to be able to watch the sun go down or to see the break of dawn, to be able to go to parties or invite a friend over. Those were all the moments you never thought would end, but sometimes something happens that seems to get in the way, you may not like it, but you don't have any say, someday this will all pass and all of the bad things will disappear. Remember when you're feeling down and your world seems to be falling apart, life is the most important thing, you should treasure it with all your heart. 65 86 i|Ke and ptfftple go, ?v£i $ay though just a simple learn to say. rou leave me now |ot to cry, this time I'll have bye.
