To the students of Belfast Central School—1970-1971: The main job of the administra- tion and faculty of Belfast Central School is to teach our students to do better “all the good things that they ordinarily do.” I would ask that each student concentrate on find- ing his goal and then concentrate on reaching it. (Other banquet picture on picture page) By CHUCK WARD Times Herald Sports Writer Paul Vienna couldn’t give a speech. “Heck, I had trouble enough just getting back to my seat,” claimed the Belfast Central School basketball coach who came away with the coveted Thomas Oakley Memorial Award as the area’s top basketball coach Monday night at the Castle Restaurant. It was the highlight of the 22nd annual Times-Herald basketball banquet hosted by E. Boyd Fitzpatrick, publisher, to honor All-Star selections from the 54 schools in a seven-county area. Vienna, a veteran of the Allegany County Class “D” coaching ranks, returned his Belfast team to the top of the circuit with an undefeated league record and guided the club to tbe semifinals of the Section 5 playoffs before bowing to perennial champion Romulus. “YOU KNOW, EVERY year the kids tell me I’m the top coach in their eyes. I guess this is natural of all players, and it’s a good feeling. But, then to be selected for this award is really a great honor. I’m tremen- dously proud... and surprised, I might add.” Vienna was selected by a panel of high school principals with committee chairman James Johnson of Hinsdale Central School making the presentation. Aside from the most valuable player awards presented for the seven leagues, Richburg Central School’s Steve Cook (the Allegany County “D” MVP) also came away with the Gary Grossi Memorial award as the season’s top scorer. The large turnout heard brief remarks from Frank Layden and Larry Weise, the head basketball coaches at Niagara and St. Bonaventure, respec- tively. IT ALSO WAS announced the Times-Herald will present a first annual Tom Drum-John Godfrey Memorial Award during the upcoming high school football season. Both young men lost their lives in Vietnam. Tom was an Olean Bishop Walsh graduate; John from Olean High School. The details of the award will be announced in the Fall. 42 Coaches Mrs. Bliven Girls Coach Emergencies often bring out strengths iVe never knevV We had 43 °ight c , oss o fast. was coV ra nV and ' sera' itote- Wp i o -e Canaseraga at Belfast Gary Haskins, assisted by Hick Wiseman, scored early in the second period and Wally Enders added an insurance goal in the third period, and this was all Belfast needed as they downed Canaseraga. 2-0. The shutout was recorded by goalie Chuck Babbitt who successfully defended against a Canaseraga penalty kick in the fourth period to preserve the whitewashing. Soccer Enthusiasm is the (ever of reason Hard work precedes Belfast’s brother team of Kick and Terry Wiseman proved to be the difference as Rick tallied in the opening minute of period two, off an assist by Terry. Seven minutes later, Kick kicked in the deciding goal, again being fed by Terry. Belfast at Kichburg A penalty kick by senior wing, Wally Enders was the only differente between league- leading Belfast and Kichburg yesterday afternoon, but it was enough to enable the Bulldogs to get by their hosts, 1-0, and retain an unblemished record. Friendship at Belfast Paul Vienna’s Belfast team served notice that they had survived last June’s graduation as they trounced Friendship, 7- 1, with senior centerfordward Rick Wiseman contributing five goals.
