Since the founding of the National Honor Society in 1921, school administrations have established over 8500 local chapters in the United States. The National Honor Society was first set up to stimulate the high scholarship, constructive leadership, purposeful service, and worthy character of the students in secondary schools of America. Belfast Central School is a member of the senior chapter of the NHS, which has members in the sophomore, junior, and senior years of high school. To be eligible for membership in the Bel- fast chapter, a candidate must have spent at least one semester in the school, be a sophomore, junior, or senior, and have an average of at least 85°]o. Students with marks above 857o are considered for membership, with their qualities of service, leadership, and character contributing substantially. New Members S. Aylor, J. Coveil, M. Babbitt. 33 Student Council The Student Coun- cil is the voice of the student body. It at- tempts to better the school and to help the students themselves. This year's Student Council consists of 15 members. At the beginning of the school year members are chosen from grades 7-12. In the fall, elections for office are held, in which anyone in junior high or nigh school may run. A Youth Oppor- tunity Program was set up this year by the Council. This program provides after-school and week- end work for students. SITTING: J. DeRock, President, T. Noether, Vice President, B. Farwell, Treasurer, C. Chalker, Secretary. STANDING: D. Noether, C. Candy Stripers The Candy Stripers, or Future Nurses' Club, was organized in Bel- fast in October 1966 by Mrs. Irene Covell, the school nurse. The girls activities consist mostly of vol- unteer work at Cuba Memorial Hospital. They assist the nurses' aids by passing and collecting food trays, cleaning empty units and talking to the patients. Each Candy Striper keeps a recora of the time she works each week. On completion of 120 hours, she will receive a pin. 34 ROW 1: L. Barber, M. Simmons, W. Atherton. ROW 2: C. Elliott, S. Shaf- er, B. Last fall the club sponsored a Hobo Day, held a bakesale, and sold cook books. It completed a Red Cross drive, in which $300 was received, helped with the U.N. I.C. E.F. drive, and made Christmas decorations for the halls of B.C.S. This charitable organization began about 16 years ago when Mrs. Ruth Taber started teaching at Belfast. The officers of the Homemaking Club for this year are as follows: Karlyn Austin, presi- dent, Sharon Young, vice president, Sandra Aylor, secretary, and Nancy Comstock, treasur- er. 37 ATHLETICS Ili Coaching Staff Mr. J. He was right. Belfast ended up champion of the league and co- champion, with Greenwood, of Section D soccer. The following is a list of the games we played, the winner of each, and the game scores. GAMES VICTOR SCORE Canaseraga at Belfast Belfast 1-0 Rushford at Belfast Belfast 4-1 Belfast at Richburg Belfast 2-1 Angelica at Belfast Belfast 2-0 Belfast at Canaseraga Canaseraga 2-0 Belfast at Rushford Tie 2-2 Richburg at Belfast Belfast 4-0 Belfast at Angelica Belfast 2-0 The regular season ended with Belfast and Canaseraga tied for first place in the league. At a play-off game at Alfred-Almond, Belfast won the league trophy when we defeated Canaseraga 1-0. After our county title victory, we went into the quarter finals against Savona at Hornell. The game ended with the score 4-0, Belfast victor, sending us into the semi- finals against Jasper. Our skill and luck held and we defeated Jasper 4-2. With the winning of this game, we moved into the finals. The Section D championship game was played against Greenwood at Angelica. Both teams were so evenly matched that neither could score. The game ended after two overtime periods with the score still 0-0. Belfast and Greenwood became co- champions of Section D. The league championship was only the second in Belfast's history, and our Section D championship trophy marked the first time that we had ever won or tied for Section D champion. It was an outstanding soccer season and it should not be a unique one. Another strong team is expected next year, in spite of the loss of four seniors: Brian Davenport, Milford Johannes, Gary Hurd, and Roger Collins. 45 Soccer NAME GRADE POSITION Brian Davenport 12 Left Wing Gary Hurd 12 Fullback Milford Johannes 12 Center Halfback Roger Collins 12 Left Halfback Tom Noether 11 Right Halfback Rich Sullivan 11 Left Halfback Ron Enders 11 Right Wing David Haskins 11 Right Inside Joel Tucker 11 Left Inside Steve Spink 10 Goalie John Covell 10 Center Forward Jerry Enders 10 Fullback Ron Foley 11 Center Forward John DeRock 11 Left Wing Ron Unfus 11 Left Inside David Treusdell 10 Left Halfback Jim Steinbiser 10 Center Halfback Clair Luce 10 Right Wing Chuck Farwell 9 Fullback Tom Harrington 9 Right Inside 46 Belfast versus Greenwood Ron Enders unloading a kick at the Green- wood goal. Ron, a junior, will be back next year to help lead our boys to victory again. Brian Davenport shown heading a ball in one of the many fine plays in the game. Brian has played the position of left wing for the past four years. At left is John Co- vell, a fine sophomore player, who will be helping us win another trophy next year. 47 Steve Spink, certainly one of the best goalies in Belfast Central School's history, goint out to keep the ball out, of the goal. Steve, a sophomore will be back next year. With a year of experience behind him, he should be better than ever. Gary Hurd, one of our fullbacks this year, is a senior. We’ll miss him next year. He's been a fine player. 48 Hustling for the Section V Championship. 49 7-8 Grade Basketball ROW 1: T. Wiseman, G. Weaver, B. Atherton, D. Sweet, L. Cockle, D. Hillman. ROW 2: J. Miller, R.
