Text from Pages 1 - 74 of the 1953 volume:

’ I i fl I We dedicate this Belorea to the memory of Richton Brown, who entered the fifth grade at Belfast Central School in February, 1949, and became a freshman last fall. Curly”, as we fondly called him, was well liked by all of us. We admired him for his excellent sportsmanship, his co-operation at all times, and his sunny disposition. We will never forget his interest and ability in sports, especially in basketball and baseball. Curly is sadly missed by all who knew him. I Twenty-six energetic freshmen entered high school in September, 1949. We were a bit shy at first; however, as the year progressed, we outgrew this as we became engrossed in our studies and activities. Being party- minded, we found that a bumpy truck ride to a Fillmore movie placed all of us in a Jovial mood. An adventure in Wellsville where many of us learned to skate (?) was another highlight in our social life. As sophomores, we were permitted to have one money-making activity. After much discussion, we decided upon a dance. We really flubbed the dub on this, but all who came enjoyed themselves. In our Junior year we plunged into our money-raising affairs. With only eighty-six cents In our treasury, we felt a great need for some revenue . Among our activities, we sold candy and cards, sponsored dances, put on dinners and had great fun presenting Aunt Cathie’s Cat , a three-act mystery comedy. We entertained the seniors at the annual Junior-Senior Banquet, at which everyone had a glorious time. Then we Journeyed to Cuba Lake after the banquet and had a ball for ourselves. I think everyone will agree that our Senior year has been the most enjoyable. We now number only seventeen, nine having dropped out moved away in the four years. Many memories of our senior year will live In our minds forever...the merriment of practising for our play Act Your Age , which proved a record-breaking success... the parties...the dances... the Joyous fun on our Washington trip, especially on our chartered bus... and finally the excitement and touch of sadness that goes with graduation. u PHYLLIS ABBEY Choir 12 3 4 Operetta 234 Belorea 4 Broadcast 123 Assft. (I wish there were more space to devote to our fourth major interest—the Rifle Club. Some of the girls and fellows made high marks on the rifle range.) In soccer the Belfast Eleven slogged through mud and water to win a victory over Belmont and tie Wellsville. The results of the remainder of games were not favorable for Belfast. Here’s praise for the excellent Job Franny Dahill accomplished as goalie. The Bulldogs started basketball practice early in November and put in many grueling hours. The Varsity squad, with Dick Backer as coach, fought for each game, but came out with disappointing results. Even though they were at the bottom of the league, the Varsity boys gained experience and learned many new things about this favorite winter sport. The Jayvees had Jack Baader as coach during the second semester. Under him we found out some more tricks of the trade. After several heart- breaking losses, the Jayvees finally defeated Fillmore 35-31 and Belmont 41-39. We hope we have some fine prospects for next yearfs Varsity and Jayvee teams. Listed below is a chart for the players individual scores: Varsity Tony D’Orazio 109 Ray Chapman 24 John Hasper 222 Franny Dahill 63 Wayne Hale 90 Skip Slack 59 Jim Jelleson 68 Lewis Harrington 17 Junior Varsity Lee Arnold 56 David Jones 17 Elwin Fox 57 Art Sullivan 102 Darrell Brown 15 Walter Kottwitz 15 Roy Patterson 0 Phil Atherton 29 Lloyd Arnold 108 Howard Morton 1 Doug Herrick 19 Bill McCumiskey 4 Artie Cooper 17 Our cheerleaders did a fine Job this year. They gave the players a lot of inspiration. They also kept our spirits up while we were feeling despondent. Our managers were also good to us. As the Joys of springtime began to appear in March, all of us boys began thinking of baseball. We commenced America18 favorite game with a confident air. Here’s good luck to all the sports participants of the year. And here’s also hearty thanks to the cheerleaders and both coaches for every- thing they did for us. k R R r VARSITY BASKETBALL Third Row - Coach Backer, Wayne Hale, John Haaper, Francis Dahill, Anthony b Orazio, Lewis Harrington, Lyle Slack, James Jelleson, Daniel Jones (Manager).
