SCHOOL EMPLOYEES 3 The scintillating-looking class above entered their Freshman year feeling very chipper and ready to brave new adventures and any obstacles which might arise We all enjoyed the new freedom and independence, which seemed part of high school life For us it was not only the beginning of four years of further education, but also of many social school activities. Our first year was highlighted by a truck ride to Fillmore to a movie and a picnic at Rushford Lake We can all remember pushing our bikes up the hills and the sun burns we received on the latter Jaunt , After one year of high school, we looked forward eagerly to becoming Sophomores. We became disillusioned early for we dis- covered that we could have only two parties a year This was quite a change from the previous year's parties—once a month! As Sophomores, we held our first money-making project, a round- and-square dance with music by Martin's Mountaineers. After con- siderable discussion, we decided on our class rings, which as Juniors we would proudly commence wearing. Early in our third year, we started thinking seriously of ways to make money to finance our Senior trip to Washington. This included selling candy, cards, and stationery and sponsoring dances. After five weeks of strenuous (?) and intense (?) practice, we presented our play, Don't Blame Me . In June we were hosts at the annual Junior-Senior Banquet, In the wild scramble to make corsages for our guests we almost missed the Banquet, Our long-awaited ambition was finally reached— Seniors at last. With the returns from our concession at the County fair; the Senior Play, One For the Money ; together with prior sources of income, we reached our goal of over a thousand dollars (the greatest amount ever collected by a Belfast class). Our success has been due largely to the untiring assistance of our advisors, Mrs. Vivian Cornett and Mr. Richard Hale. On the nineteenth of April we embarked for our Nation's Capital, Washington, D. C., where we found the Continental Hotel expecting our arrival; and the ever-prominent places of historical and present-day significance waiting to guide us through their famous halls. All of this—plus the other pleasures derived from our trip—produced a wish that we might go again. We must admit that the time has passed too quickly—often the feeling of so many graduates. As we leave dear old B. C, 3., we carry with us nothing but happy memories of the past and a pleasant anticipation of the future. r Patricia Brown Choir 1234 Cheerleader 234 Student Council Sec'y. 4 Class Sec'y. 3 4 Class Vlce-Pres. 2 Operetta 3 4 Camera Club 4 Junior Play Senior Play Broadcast 123; Editor 4 Belorea 3; Literary Editor 4 F. Amid colorful autumn leaves, pleasant sunshine, slippery mud and chilling rain, the Belfast Eleven” engaged in seven soccer games—winning two (one with a league opponent), tying another league struggle, and losing four. The team vanquished her league opponent Belmont 2-1. They also executed a victory in a non-league contest with Canaseraga 5-4. A game with Rushford resulted in a tie (2-2). Special mention should be paid to the captain—Winston Lilly—who was known as one of the best half-backs and penalty kickers in the league. The Varsity basketball squad, with Richard Backer as coach and Howard Jennings and Winston as captains, experienced some ex- cellent training and learned numerous and valuable facts about our popular winter sport. Even though they were far from the top, they had a couple of winning evenings—the happier one being Feb- ruary 12, when they downed Belmont 32-25. This was a fine return for losing their first contest with Belmont by three points. Other highlights occurred when they defeated Scio and when they went to town in the first half of the Fillmore battle. The Varsity cagers were her captains, John Hasper, '’Jim Jelleson, Wayne Hale, Jack Parker, Sonny Smith, Al D Orazio, and Ralph Brown (who Joined them for the last five games). The Jayvees, with Ralph Windus as their coach, exhibited some commendable sportsmanship and profited greatly from the season. The most outstanding night for these players (listed below) re- sulted from a victory over Belmont s squad. Varsity John Hasper 179 Wayne Hale 31 Winston Lilly 90 Sonny Smith 24 Howard Jennings 44 Jim Jelleson 23 Ralph Brown 37 Al D Orazio 10 Jack Parker 15 Junior Varsity Lyle Slack 93 Howard Fields 6 Jim Cornett 83 Martin Halbert 4 Lloyd Arnold 45 Francis Dahill 2 Lee Arnold 44 Larry Moyer 1 Al D Orazio 23 Douglas Herrick 1 Elwin Fox 7 Darrell Brown Lewis Harrington The traditional saying goes something like this: When spring rolls around, all young men s fancies turn to baseball. Conse- quently, several fellows rushed down to Coach Backer s office where he made this statement: All pitchers and catchers will report for practice March 1. I shall welcome any boys who wish to try out for the team. We do not know the results at this writing. In addition to the sports above, there was much enthusiasm after soccer season in a series of fundamentals of football, and in February and March in a program of mixed group volleyball games noon hours (with Joyce Jones, Alice Osgood, Winston Lilly and Sonny Smith as captains).
