I ' k 5PDRT5 Any soccer fan who might have been watching the Belfast Bulldogs at one of their practice sessions might well have predicted that Coach Roberts was about to turn loose a championship team on the unsuspecting soccer teams of Allegany County. Each of the eleven players was ready to prove that the Belfast Bulldogs was not Just a fancy name; the team set about proving it in the first few games. When the other teams woke up to this fact, Belfast was well on its way toward its goal— a championship. A heart-breaking defeat by Rushford seemed to break the spirit of the team. In the last frantic plays of the game the faces of the players seemed to show that something inside had broken after a penalty kick was scored to make a 1-0 defeat. Still the Bulldogs continued to win after realizing that a championship soccer team for B.C.S. was Impossible. This soccer season was one of the best for Belfast with every player in there playing his hardest and best. Coordination and sports- manship of the team ran high to make 1949 a highly successful year for the B.C.S. soccer team. The scores were as follows: Belfast 4 Fillmore 5 Belfast 2 Canaseraga 2 Belfast 5 Angelica 2 Belfast 4 Fillmore 2 Belfast 8 Belmont 3 Belfast 0 Rushford 1 Belfast 7 Sclo 5 Belfast 4 Friendship 3 Belfast 2 Wellsville3 Belfast 5 Wellsville 7 The outcome of the soccer season made the school all the more con- fident of the basketball squad, which began shaping up in November. A fast-breaking Varsity with an almost Impenetrable defense began a tough schedule of games, winning now and losing occasionally after hard-fought games. The ever-rivalling Rushford Five handed us our hardest defeat again, winning by only one point. Of course, there were other defeats which could be traced to some small fault of the team, but such a disaster was unpredictable as well as unfathomable. The individual scores for the Varsity were as follows: Bruce Burr 180 Lester Hotchkiss 95 Robert Smith 194 Francis Thornton 90 Clare Emery 81 Donn Schroeder 68 The Junior Varsity, made up of game and fighting players, went into every game scrapping until the final second which resulted in their winning over teams which anyone might well expect to be victorious. There were the occasional losses and setbacks, but the games showed that their spirit was anything but broken. Unfortunately, neither team—the soccer or the basketball—captured the league championship, but they were champions to many of the fans who saw the teams in action. 'Hie coming baseball season promises the usual spirit and skillful playing which the team has shown in previous years. Every player will be out there on the diamond fighting for every run; and win or lose, the fine sportsmanship and skillful playing will always be there.
