Pelican tate Pelican State is an annual convention sponsored by the American Legion planned to stimulate a strong spirit of patriotism in young men and women. Delegates are given a one-week course in the me- chanics of government to aid in a thorough under- standing of our country's policies. They learn to respect and to use our freedoms, to have pride in our country, and to be responsible citizens. They gain not only knowledge, but also wisdom - the wisdom needed to apply the ethics of good citizen- ship. They learn that men exist to help other men. The final reward of a week at Pelican State is, indeed, the great satisfaction of serving and helping someone else. Participants leave with a desire to help others and to love their country more. Representatives are chosen in the spring of their Junior year. They are nominated by the faculty and elected by the Junior class. Boys' Pelican State representatives were Michael Fink, John Duffy, Bill Cushing, Max Brown, and Charles Traub fnot picturedj. Girls' Pelican State rep- resentatives were Terryl Sinisi, Kay I-lranitzky, Judy Covell, Janice Mc- Cants, Vicki Hippard, Sylvia Reno, and Nancy Denninghoff fnot picturedj .-v-I V y, - . . ,, i vft f? rmi -' 55
