Today, most teachers place a great deal of stress on the spirit of enjoying literature, rather than just studying it. It is important not only to read, learn, and sometimes memorize literature, but also to appreciate its value and to understand its deeper mean- ing. In our English Department, other courses, including the study of grammar, and Business English, also play an important role in the curriculum of students. Through the Repertory Theatre, tapes, records, visual aids, paper backs, and panel dis- cussions, the learning and appreciation of English courses have been made progressively more interesting for the student. Speech - Spirit of Communication The spirit of communication with ones fellow man is incorporated in the Speech Department. The art of speaking with clarity, meaning, and self-confidence is the goal that every student enrolled in this course is striving to achieve. This art must be developed through coaching in the fundamentals of speech and through nu- merous classroom experiences. Included in the various studies of the speech classes is instruction in makeup, stage, and acting. The speech classes this year, attended the Repertory Theatre workshop, at which they gained a greater understanding of the performing arts.
