The Year of Spirit 1981 Box 176 Beemer, ME 68716 Beemer Public School The 1980-81 Beemer Public School an- nual staff presents to the high school THE YEAR OF SPIRIT A complete and condensed version of the 1980-81 school year. Changes have been made this year adding more pages and different ideas to make this book even more memorable. Consider this book a record of a piece of your life-a capsule of the total sum of your experiences during the most impor- tant years in your life. Something you can look back on and cherish in the years to come. A big thanks goes to our advisor and sponsor Mrs. Beckmann for putting up with us and donating so much of her time. f 1981 Annual Staff: Mrs Beckmann; Row 1-R. Gadeken, L. Belling, C. Bradfield. B. First you have to know what to look for. In the diction- ary spirit has many definitions: vital force, an immortal part of man, temper, eager, desire, courage, lively animated and many more. Every individual has their own special kind of Spirit, good and bad, put these together and you have a mass volume of SPIRIT. The 1980-81 school year has been stated The Year of Spirit. The con- tent of this book illustrates many forms of Spirit generated throughout the year. During the Homecoming Spirit Week spirit children were elected to represent the year. The season came with a feeling of ex- citement, yet unassurance as to whether these players had the potential to live up to the previous two state champion- ships. And as the season progressed, it looked like another great season! Headed by seven super seniors Ryan Gadeken, David Heidt, Dale Martin, Mike Mestl, Bert Paulsen, Brian Schantz, and Paul Troyer, they won the Logan Valley Conference title, and were state qualifiers for the fourth straight year. The season came to an abrupt end though after losing to Adams in the quarter finals of state. With this being the first loss to many, and only the second for the seniors they can hold their heads high as we say, They're the greatest to us! 24 Bobcat Pride Still Shines Ryan Dale 25 First Year of Class C Volleyball Under the direction of first year coach Dale Jackson, once again we continued to have another very successful season. This being the 13th year that volleyball has been played at B.H.S., we sure deny the superstition of the =13 being unlucky! We feel that our 13th season was a most memo- rable and LUCKY one at that! We finished our varsity volleyball season with 17 wins against just 3 losses. We received third place honors in our own Beemer Invitational, and once again we claimed the Logan Valley Conference Championship Title for the seventh consecutive year. Class C Districts were a whole new ball game for us. It brought us tougher competition, and a chance to work for what may have been a dream come true! We took on a tough Homer squad in the C-7 championships at Lyons, and came home victorious. The exuberant shouts and screams of the crowd that night are still ringing in our ears, and the sight of our first Class C District trophy that in itself was a dream come true!! Unfortunately, the next night we were con- fronted with a well-rounded (16-4) Elkhorn Valley club, at Wayne High School. The outcome was not what we had hoped for. The match took three sets, and we were defeated for only the third time this year. We were all looking forward for another chance to try for the state title, so when we fell just short of the state bid, we felt that the season ended much too abruptly. But looking back over the year, we learned many a thing from this year's season, and the most important being that of teamwork. We learned that working as a team, did wonders for us. And when it came down to who had the best players working together on the court, nine times out of ten, it was us. We also learned that teamwork pays off in the final out- come, and that we were what you call a volleyball team , and in the true sense of the meaning!! A Memorable One The B team completed a winning (6-2) season, while the C team ran an unde- feated (4-0) season. During our successful 1980-1981 season, a few individuals received special honors. They include: FREMONT TRIBUNE ALL-AREA SQUAD Shelly Hartman Second team Gina Raasch Honorable Mention Pam Schlickbernd Honorable Mention NORFOLK DAILY NEWS TOP 12 Shelly Hartman Honorable Mention Gina Raasch Honorable Mention Pam Schlickbernd Honorable Mention LOGAN VALLEY CONFERENCE TEAM Shelly Hartman First team Pam Schlickbernd First team Pam Disher-Honorable Mention ALL-STATE TEAM Shelly Hartman Honorable Mention The Year of Spirit Improvement is what the boys 1980-81 basketball season was noted for with a new coach and playing class C ball the boys kept the ball rolling. Though ending the season with a 6-10 record there were many exciting games that had close 4th quarters losing only by a few points. Coach Dale Jack- son assisted by Larry Bausch stressed the importance of team- work. With eight returning let- termen and twenty other team members the boys progressed. Af- ter Christmas they had a winning streak for three weeks in a row. Conference tourney wasn't much to talk about. Having to play the first round game in Snyder's barn didn't give the Bobcats much of a chance. Districts were hosted at Improves Boys Basketball Wayne High where luck once again was not on our side having to play first seated Homer. Over all the season wasn't all that bad. Improvement was made and good times were shared. Those receiving honors were Robert Paulsen with All Conference first string and Dale Martin receiving honorable mention. Bobkittens Complete Doing a complete 'about face' from last year, we completed the most successful season in the sport's history, here at BHS. Under the direction of second year coach, Ernest Heidt, we showed much improvement when this years' season rolled around. We split our first four games, then built a seven game winning streak which was then clipped with a loss against Decatur in the finals of the Logan Valley Conference tourna- ment. Then our high hopes came to an end with a loss to eventual champion Emerson Hubbard in the district tournament. Much of our team's success can be credited to, of course the out- standing quality of players, but also to the positive attitudes and teamwork that was shown on the court. With this added little extra, we were able to reverse last year's final outcome of 3-12 to our 1981 season record: an impressive 13-4, along with Logan Valley Confer- ence runner-up honors. We feel that this year was a very successful and fun season, which will always be remembered. Not only because of the numerous wins we accumulated, but also be- cause of the very important lesson we learned this year, that gave us such a fantastic season: That when things aren't going your way, and it always seems that you wind up on the short end of things, that's not the time to take matters into your hands, but it's the time to use good ole' 'team- work.' And by looking at our record, 30 ‘About-Face’ Season you can surely tell, WE DID JUST THAT! A couple of individuals were named for individual honors. They are as follows: ALL LOGAN VALLEY CONFER- ENCE First team-Pam Schlickbernd Second team—Shelly Hartman ALL-AREA NORFOLK DAILY NEWS Honorable Mention—Pam Schlickbernd ALL-AREA FREMONT TRIBUNE Second team Shelly Hartman Honorable Mention —Pam Schlickbernd LINCOLN STAR OMAHA WORLD HERALD Honorable Mention Shelly Hart- man I QUIT Why am I here? How can we acquire success or is it that important? Do we have to finish first to get that much enjoyment? I Believe success is in the heart, an achievement on your own. The spirit and enthusiasm make Homecoming week something you want to re- member about high school. I remember Monday, the beginning of a long week of events. Everyone was dressed like a typical high school student of the 1950's. The football players and pep club girls' lock- ers were filled with candy and notes signed Secret Admirer. Tuesday was Western day and almost ev- eryone borrowed a cowboy hat or dug up a pair of boots. Wednesday was Hollywood Day, we had every- thing from Mickey and Minney Mouse to Inspector Cloisseau. Everyone was more than willing to become a star. Thursday was slop day. A day, that is always fun, on slop day everyone is inclined to just be themselves, even the teachers found themselves in blue jeans and sweat shirts. Thursday afternoon the inside of the school was decorated. Thursday was finished off ni- cely by a victory in volleyball over Bancroft. Finally Friday arrived, purple and white day, every- thing was decorated. People were looking forward to the game. Miss Jeffers prepared a breakfast for the pep club girls at her apartment. Not much school work got done, but the teachers were pretty under- standing. At 1:30 everyone rushed outside for the traditional bon fire where the replica of a Walthill player was thrown into a blazing fire by Mr. Peck. After the bon fire everyone RAN down town for a pep rally. The teachers skit, the spirited cheerleaders, the painted windows of the down town businesses, the spirit awards, the band, and the energetic football players all made the end of the school day exciting. The sen- iors won first place for their painting on the Drug Store windows, the juniors second place on the Lazy Dude, and the seniors third place on the school. Seven thirty that evening finally arrived. The first half of the football game seemed to go rapidly. When halftime came everyone was on the edge of his seat waiting for the royalty to be crowned. After the game was over and we soundly beat Walthill with the score of 47 to 6 everyone rushed home or to a friend's house to get ready for the dance. As we walked into the gym for the dance, the night was black but the stars were shining brightly. Avatar was the band for the night. Even though Avatar was not what we had hoped for, everyone seemed to have a good time. 48 “We Are Not Afraid of Tomorrow; For We Have Seen Yesterday; And We Love Today. When the long awaited night was over there were many mixed feelings. For the freshmen it was a be- ginning of four years to come. For the seniors it marked the last homecoming at Beemer High. The homecoming theme, We are not afraid of tomorrow, for we have seen yesterday, and we love today, seemed very appropriate. The next day the painted windows were cleaned and washed, the decorations torn down, the corsages and boutineres pressed in a scrap book, and the laughs, and smiles, were tucked away as memories that will always be cherished. The Homecoming royalty for 1980 were Queen Gina Raasch, King Brian Schantz, Senior attendants: Dale Martin and Diane Oswald, Junior attendants: Jeff Schulz and Holly Hasenkamp, Sophomore attendants: Brian Hass and Denise Hasenkamp, Fresh- men attendants: Lyle Martin and Julie Mar- tin, Crownbearers: Scott Mostek and Kara Nellor. To Be Defeated A nd Yet Not Give In That Is Victory 53 Athletic Banquet drew a large crowd. China Grove Enchants Weeks before the Junior-Senior prom seniors as usual started asking questions trying to visualize the prom decorations. Decorating day for the juniors was one of the longest days of their lives. Every- body tried viciously to sneak a peak of the precious decorations but somehow always got “bounced out. Finally May 9th arrived and at approxi- mately 6:30 p.m. the long awaited time for the banquet arrived. Everyone was greeted by two Chinese servers that started out the “China Grove evening. Everyone was seated and the traditional welcome was presented by Kevin Strudthoff. Then came those humorous junior class prophesies, read by Russ Ehrisman. The three course Chinese meal equipped with chop sticks and fortune cookies started off with a mysterious Chinese soup. The main course consisted of pork chops, rice, jello and corn giving everyone a chance to try out their chop sticks. All this was followed by a chocolate dream bar dessert. After the meal it was time for the Sen- ior class to get back at the Juniors with their class wills read by Paul Troyer. Thank yous were given and the banquet was dis- missed, followed by the dance that started at nine o'clock. The band was Chaser from Lincoln and presented very enjoyable music until mid- night. Everyone will remember the chilly night of May 9th and China Grove will become a long lasting memory for the Juniors and Seniors of 1981. 54 The Year Of Spirit 55 Fine Arts Program Displays The fine arts banquet celebrated many of the great achievements made in contests and self-satis- faction throughout the year. As usual the potluck dinner gave everyone a chance to feast without feeling bad. While people were still munching, Mrs. Knobbe's home eco- nomics class presented a style show that was commentated by Mrs. Knobbe based on Romeo and Juliet. There were also art displays in the gym. Highlighting the awards presenta- tion was the honoring of retiring guidance counselor, Gertrude Loren- sen. School board president, Gary Schulz presented Mrs. Lorensen with a gold watch. Another special presentation was made to Julie Mahnke for receiving first place in a Cengas poster contest which awarded her with a $100 sav- ings bond. Another top honor announced in- cluded the 1981 John Philip Sousa award to senior trumpet player Shelly Hartman. Elementary principal Rozella Tiet- jen presented medals to participants of the March of Dimes Reading Olympics. Miss Stewart presented library awards, SHINE achievement certifi- cates, problem solving team and ju- nior great books. She also com- mented on the great job the senior problem solving team did receiving third in the state bowl and first with their skit. Music director Deb Crumbliss presented band awards, chorus awards and honored those who re- ceived superior rating at district mu- sic contest. 56 Finest Quality Ever! Speech teacher, Theola Peck awarded members of her speech team and honored the varsity for placing third in Class C state speech contest. Students got into the act also presenting gifts of appreciation to Miss Crumbliss, Miss Stewart and Mrs. Peck. ✓ I 57 What We Are Dared To Face Today With the traditional music of Pomp and Circumstance, played by Rose Mary Raasch on the piano, the graduating class began their procession across the gym—a moment they waited a long time for. Escorted by their atten- dants, Brenda Kersten and Kevtp Strudthoff, the seniors in gowns of purple and white made their way to the stage which was fashionably decorated by the sophomore class. After the Invocation by Rev. Ray Pile, the high school band then played Royal March and “Come Back to Sorrento which was fol- lowed by the Salutatorian address by David Heidt. The Senior Class joined their voices together and sang Flying Free after which their Valedictorian, Debbie Dinslage, gave her speech. Miss Deb Crumbliss sang I Believe in You dedi- cating it to the graduates. The Baccalaureate address by Rev. Pile was interesting to all as well as the scholar- ship awards presented by Mrs. Gertrude Lorensen. Principal Larry Bausch then presented the graduating class to Mr. Gary Schulz who after reading a poem to the seniors, presented them their diplomas. 58 Will Be The Reality Of Tomorrow Closing with the benediction by Rev. Pile, the graduates filed out of the packed gym each re- ceiving the class flower—the white rose-and stood out- side where they were congratulated by family, friends, and relatives. The night left many mixed feelings of happiness, excite- ment and fear. Though the Class of 1981 has left, their presence and accom- plishments will be long remembered and cherished. 59 Annual—Staffers ... MAKING MEMORIES Our tomorrows rolled away . . . Unfolded in the past they lay. Now eve call them yesterday, When memories were made. Locked forever in the past, Today has journeyed there so fast. We've only memories to grasp of life's role that we have played Still, today it's not too late, for magic moments we'll relate, if we will just leave out the hate, as to the past they fade.
